The perfect solution fallacy is when an argument assumes that an idea should be rejected or ignored because it does not 100%, flawlessly, perfectly solve the issue it is designed to address.
I mention this because this type of thinking is *rife* on the Fab forums. I’m tired of seeing it go unchallenged.
Here are some of the ones I’ve seen on Fab:
- “STI tests don’t detect every known STI, therefore there’s no point testing.”
- “People can use condoms and still catch STIs, therefore I’ll only play bareback.”
- “Masks don’t totally eliminate the spread of airborne particles, therefore nobody should wear them.”
- “Vaccines aren’t a 100% effective, so there’s no need to take them.”
- “If we introduce gun laws, some criminals will still have guns, so we shouldn’t regulate them.”
- “If we ban fireworks, some people will just have illegal fireworks parties.”
