I'm not really keen on being called baby, babe, honey, darling, love, lovely, sweetie or any other such patronising rubbish. I ignore it, so it doesn't get my back up, but it's not something I appreciate. |

I don't like being called any of them in messages from strangers. If I'm close to someone in real life then it's different as it's personal between us. I will admit to having a bad habit of calling people honey though and I don't know where I picked it up from ! |

I think it's unfair to call it patronising, I always use terms of endearment to everyone and I'm not patronising them in any way, it is a part of my personality just like others who swear every other word which I wouldn't do. |

It feels patronising to me. You may not mean it that way, but that's how it feels. |

Very interesting, how should strangers address us?Madam is too formal, most women hate babe, hun, hunni, luv, chick and a whole host of others, with men you notice they call each other mate, pal, chum, geezer, mucka,i think its just a case of people being un-sure of the correct terms to use, even me |

I shall never forgive my nearest and dearest for phoning my workplace at the time and asking if she could speak to her 'fluffy bundle'
I left there in 1997, but am still in touch with some of my colleagues and they call it me to this day ! |

I'm guilty of calling people doll, darling, hun, sweetcheeks, babes, love - all sorts of terms of endearment, often coupled with their name (assuming I remember it, which at my age and with the amount of drugs I take, it's not a given) e.g. "Hiya Dave *, me darling, how's you doing?" Just the way I am, so far no-one's ever said they've been offended by it, but if they did, I would take that on board and ensure I didn't call them anything after that other than their name (again, assuming I remember it)
*Other names are available |
