No, no. He was the first person I noticed in the Forum when I stumbled in here precisely because he was mocking someone and I thought it seemed unkind. That was before I knew how the Forum worked and it was simply his 'thing'.

Kitty did a recent thread in which I made a very positive comment about CJ. I've made a less negative comment here because that's my honest opinion. If you don't want former members discussed in their absence then probably best not to start threads about them.

"Give the man a bit of Dignity he's not here to defend himself."

What exactly does he need to defend? The impression he has given us? Do we have no minds of our own or eyes that can read and see what he writes?

They're our impression and he left them in my mind himself. I don't need him to defend what I have seen of him and what he has written himself.

How everyone else wants to post their impression is up to them and I shall read their posts and take those on board myself.

This is turning into some kind of twisted memorial service, in which case I was always told not to speak ill of the dead!

I found his comments, by and large, funny and from time to time the guy made more pointed observations where he presumably thought something wasn't right, which let's face it plenty of folks do on here.

As it's a memorial, my funniest recollection was when Bellaseas started a thread and he commented that it was only her second thread, the first one being about a potato. Her reply to him was priceless too.

I guess I thought those that didn't have anything nice to say would scroll past and not say it at all.

Ideally in an adult world isn't that supposed to happen?

Unless I missed out, nobody was actually mean about him, nor have they insulted him. They made an observation about him based upon how he came across to them.

The thread was just a curiosity, but if "positive" comments are welcome so should those that are considered "negative". Again actual slagging off has not happened, as one post said just the impression he made on others.

As tea has said, good or bad things, more is being said about him now than he was here.

For info, to the people who obviously like him but are complaining he isn't here to defend himself from people who say they were not fond of his posts, this is the point, he isn't here ( or has not made himself known if he is ) so the posts don't break any rules

To be fair, the posts were observations anyway

Just curious, but the rules don't say *current* users and given the propensity for users to leave/hide and then return, it's probably just as well. This would suggest that upon returning, the outcome that the rules are trying to prevent, inter alia hurt to others, would occur.

I find it a bit distasteful people critiquing what they think of him on a public forum.

He may not be on fab atm (or he may be who knows!)

But this was not a thread where HE asked for public opinions on him and if he does come back this will be available for him to view.

Yes he could be a marmite character..

however publicly bitching about someone is really not nice..

It wasn’t so long ago that many forumites were commenting on how awful the popularity threads are and how mean it is to single people out and how it makes people feel left out etc.. whilst talking about how those types of threads can affect people’s mental health.

Now we’ve got some people character assassinating someone who is not here to defend himself..

What’s the adage..

‘If you haven’t got anything nice to say, say nothing at all’

The very fact that it will still be around for him to see allows him to defend himself when he does see it if he chooses. Not that there is anything to defend - I don't know if I've missed any posts but none of them actually insulted him. General comments about observations based upon the way he presented himself to others.

There are far worse things being said about singers and bands in a different thread that are not here to defend themselves - as far as we know, maybe they will potentially see what's been said.

Extreme example but not entirely improbable.

The whole nothing nice, nothing at all mantra is complete bullshit, otherwise nobody would be picked up on or called out on anything. Be honest but don't be mean or cruel is a much better way to live.

If you don't want the negative brought up, don't mention the positive. Balance is critical.

A public forum, regardless of the subject is about discussion including airing opinions on threads such as this. It is not, and never should be an echo chamber.

I'd say if you haven’t got anything nice to say, find a way to say it without bullying the other would be more apt to the subject of this thread.

There had been many occasions, as witnessed in threads where the last thing of concern was someone's mental health. In fact, there seemed to be some sort of delight taken in attacking the mentally vulnerable. Hence the whirlwind of impressions and opinions posted in this thread. We reap what we sow.

"Poor guy isn't even here to defend himself!

This. The negative comments are unnecessary and not in the spirit of the thread I feel"

Is it really negative if you’re just voicing your observation? What kind of society are we in where we need this constant mollycoddling?

If people were saying they heard on the grapevine that he punched babies and ate cats, fair enough, but not something as straight forward as people taking a dislike to him mocking people (negative in its own right - did you pick him up on it?) Especially when a lot of people clearly thought it.

"

As has been said, you start a thread revering people. There are a lot of people who don't share the same view, and they have their reasons. You can't control how it goes and is nieve to believe you can.

You can't virtually stick your fingers in your ears and shout la la la la. Because people don't share a view.

Public bitching about people is the forum way - it is ok to to bitch about peole as long as its not a subjective xxxx. Or on someone's hot list

(‘If you haven’t got anything nice to say, say nothing at all’)

How often this phrase/adage is used by so many to simply say 'if you don't agree with me, shutup'

"Or perhaps it might make folk reconsider if it's wise to start threads like this in future

Cos once you start a thread, you don't get to control exactly how it goes

Bit rich blaming the OP for starting the thread.

Last time I checked it was called ‘where’s CJ Gone’ fairly innocent question imho

Not’

‘ let’s all give our personal opinions on CJ.’

Should everyone just have agreed that they miss him too ?"

Absolutely not.. but no need to give reasons why they don’t miss him.

A simple I don’t miss him would suffice.

But things can be discussed and debated without offering your personal opinion on the poster.

I agree debate is healthy but..

I can disagree with someone without making it personal and making statements about their character (flaws or not)

"Poor guy isn't even here to defend himself!

This. The negative comments are unnecessary and not in the spirit of the thread I feel

Is it really negative if you’re just voicing your observation? What kind of society are we in where we need this constant mollycoddling?

If people were saying they heard on the grapevine that he punched babies and ate cats, fair enough, but not something as straight forward as people taking a dislike to him mocking people (negative in its own right - did you pick him up on it?) Especially when a lot of people clearly thought it."

I actually did hear that? It must be true

It is not, and never should be an echo chamber."

It was my way of slipping it in without making it look like bitching

I agree, I can’t but I can express my opinion that I find the general tone distasteful.

But I also have not singled a particular comment or poster out who has shared an opinion I find a bit off.

King's Crustacean

He made valuable comments. Intelligent and witty.

Talk about backstabbing....

What's those low rumblings about community and moral here all the time?

I'm far from shocked. The faux sentimental shite and self aggrandisement in society has reeked for eons...

I hope he's well and does well and feels well.

I imagine CJ will be reading all these comments here as we speak, and will be back. It will be interesting to see his posting style going forwards.

These types are not debating threads, or will attract any kind of debate or discussion, they are binary - marmite.

There are two responses people can put.

Response 1. I will miss him.

Response 2. I won't miss him.

"For info, to the people who obviously like him but are complaining he isn't here to defend himself from people who say they were not fond of his posts, this is the point, he isn't here ( or has not made himself known if he is ) so the posts don't break any rules

To be fair, the posts were observations anyway

Just curious, but the rules don't say *current* users and given the propensity for users to leave/hide and then return, it's probably just as well. This would suggest that upon returning, the outcome that the rules are trying to prevent, inter alia hurt to others, would occur.

Sorry you have lost me

I'm assuming in your post (that I've quoted) you were referring to the forum rules and to that fact that the phrase "site users" means current users, not someone who has left fabs, and so any comments about that person are fair game? "

The forum rules protect other forum users if it was abusive about them etc so basically yes, talking about someone that is not a member is fine, be that someone in the news or ex users.

Having said that, there was no abuse on this thread , only observations
