I feel like one, so I'm having one !
And before anyone starts, I know I didn't have to buy them !
1 x chicken sandwich
1 x tuna sandwich
1 x water
1 x Coke Zero
Not on flashy bread, not served in any area of fantastic ambience, but rather just pre-packed butties and bottled drinks in Brussels airport.
Cost of said items, £20 !

I remember nearly fainting when asked to pay £18 for a pizza slice and £6 for a can of juice in a Turkish airport. Only time I refused to feed my son anything else till we arrived home. |

A can of Coke costs 1 GBP at the chippy I frequent, when I can get it for less than 30 in a multipack from supermarkets.
A thick juicy rib-eye steak costs about 6 GBP at the best butcher in town, whereas a pub would charge me nearly 20 GBP for a plate of steak and chips.
Mackerel being one of the cheapest fish about, yet I have seen restaurants charging nearly 20 GBP for a plate.

You'd have to pay me £20 to get me to eat a plate of mackerel |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
It's always a shock but they can get away with it so they do. A captive, hungry audience.
Plus, for external catering you are paying for the cost of the space and the staff. Never try and compare that to what you would pay to do it at home unless you add in your hourly rate and your rent/mortgage and utility costs. Don't forget the transport costs to get it home.

I knew we weren't gonna get fed on either flight and with connections, it was a 12 hour travelling day door to door, so I knew at some point between checking out and getting home I'd want a nibble.
I had kept 16 euros back to get a snack for us, thinking that would be enough.
£7.50ish each even at airport prices should be enough for a butty and a drink.
Without slagging all airports off, I was pleased to note that on the way out, Starbucks in Manchester airport only charged £2.50 for a mug sized latte.
Also on the way out, I was 'impressed' that Lufthansa offered complimentary coffee to their passengers, not only on the plane but at various places throughout Frankfurt airport too.
Mind you, I only spotted that after I'd just paid £4 for an iced tea |

As I said, a captive, hungry audience. There are usually places that have more keenly priced items but it is faff finding them. |
