Finally joined the masses and watched it.
Very disturbing as I've literally had intrusive thoughts very similar to some of the situations depicted, but overall an interesting watch |

I watched it with subtitles. Much better than the dubbing
I enjoyed it, even if it did set my anxiety off...Especially the tug of war game.
I hope there is a 2nd series |

"If you enjoyed squid game I think you’d like Alice in borderland "
I was gonna say, it’s kinda very similar story!! Tho they have been mashed up stories like this already
Think of Battle Royale from the 00s x |

We’ve watched both. Hoping there is another series of Alice in Borderland.
Stag
"
I’ve continued with the manga actually as I was interested to know how the game continued when the J Q K cards appeared !! In ways the games from Alice were obviously more mature.
I am still on episode 2 of squid games but amazing visuals! They deffo spent more money than they did on Alice in borderland |

I found the main protagonist so over the top and annoying that I could barely watch it.
However Lily was really into it so we carried on. By episode 3 a lot more has been brought in to play and the show had a lot more depth so I started to enjoy it a lot more.
Overall a interesting series that’s a lot of fun and takes some big twists and turns, some obvious and others not so!

"I binged it over the weekend. Just as dark and twisted as I hoped for ! I didnt like the ending. "
The ending did just feel like a bit like “oh let’s do it this way so we can have a series 2”, rather just a natural flow I felt. |

I found the ending disappointing too. It was a good watch but for me it didn’t live up to all the hype.

I enjoyed it, typical Asian style manga mash up with moral choices, natural human characteristics, the bad dubbing makes for comedy moments and there is always a twist, some predictable others not so, leading nicely into S2. |

Totally agree with those saying the dubbing was annoying. One of the women's voices was so screechy I don't understand how the voice actress wasn't sacked. When I turned off the dubbing it was way more watchable, but I couldn't then multitask as I had to be watching at all times for the subtitles. Man, it's a tough life |

In parts what the subtitles said was quite different to what the actual dialogue should have been was my issue. That has been the case with a few foreign films and series I have watched. Most isn’t going to drastically change the overall picture but it was far enough out to change more subtle things parts. I had read an article that claimed even the dubbing changed bits too, although not as much.
I assume the voice was the woman who went with the gangster? She was very annoying. |

Unfortunately the subtitle translation is weak and does a disservice to the script. Things are incorrectly translated or translated in to their most simple form, even more so than the dubbing translations. Often losing the point or heart of what is being said. |

I think this is done on purpose in order to be able to match the actors' lips as much as possible and create less disconnect for viewers. I think as long as the general meaning of the dialogue is the same they do have some license to change it. I've noticed discrepancies with subtitles too when watching movies in foreign languages I understand but fully appreciate that there are certain words/phrases that can't really be translated perfectly into English. That being said, I'm never going to understand every single language I'll ever watch a movie in so all I can do is just try and enjoy what's being presented to me the best I can.
And yes it was that woman's voice. Absolutely ghastly. |

This doesn't surprise me, the dubbed dialogue was awful. I'd be very surprised if the original was that bad. Wished I watched it with subtitles now |

The “fairness” aspect of it annoyed me.
2 of the games weren’t fair.
Tug of war isn’t fair because you are relying on a team you made without knowing what the team is for. It’s also very weight/strength based so men are gonna have the advantage
The glass tiles wasn’t fair because whoever goes last has the biggest advantage
The other 3 seems pretty fair. |

I always have both on and it is surprising how different they are at times, not just this series but others to. I’ve found dubbing is normally closer to what is actually happening on screen. |

I watched first episode only with dubbing. I much prefer to hear real actors ! and apparently there is a huge spark of interest in learning Korean since the series started |

Watched it with subtitles. Treating myself to an episode tonight. Really enjoying it. The main actor has one of the most sympathetic expressions I’ve seen. I really feel for some of them. Got me hooked. |

But it was completely fair, you chose your teams or joined a team with the game to come unknown and each person picked a number for the bridge game again not knowing the game ahead
Please explain how this is not fair |

Isn't that the point though, the psychology of choosing the strongest first for games rather than the weakest and such? Kind of the opposite of PE at school . Also quite liked that in some games (no spoilers) it wasn't advantageous to choose a friend to be on the same team. |

Because you get an advantage based on randomness
If the olympics made you choose a bib number and the lower numbers got a head start we wouldn’t call that a fair competition
Randomness doesn’t = fair |

Precisely this, without knowing what you were heading into picking the strongest or friends over others deemed weaker isn’t always great game play. With all things you make a choice based on what you know at the time, with hindsight you might think differently. It was good at highlighting this. |

For example, fairness on the bidge game would be everyone having their own bridge to go across so you all have an equal and fair chance
On sang woo too, someone made a great meme about how the series is meant to leave you hating capitalism and the mega wealthy VIPs that literally used human suffering as entertainment
But instead everyone’s like “fuck sang woo” |
