How to deal with negative thoughts?

Let's discuss how negative thoughts affect us and how we they can be dealt with.
Negative thoughts can certainly be soul crushing and once they take hold, it can feel like you've fallen into a dark abyss that can be hard to get out.
They can make you lose your confidence and your self-esteem.
They can make you feel unattractive and unwanted.
They can ruin your day or your night out.
They can make you lose interest in anything and everything.
They can make you feel isolated and alone.
And sadly, they can make you feel hateful about yourself.
If you or someone you know feels like this, my advice would be to talk about how you or they feel and how bad it affects you or them.
No one should feel like they have to do this alone. |

To be honest I could handle my negativity well until I met my ex and she got me to talk about it.
Shitloads harder now. I was in a much better place keeping things to myself and getting on with it.
I know that is not the modern way right now but stoicism is the way for me. |

I keep trying different things but not sure what works
Getting out does but that can be a struggle at times
Am fortunate have people to talk to but don't like bringing down their day |

I think dealing with negative thoughts is an incredibly personal journey that most if not all will go through and whilst coping techniques can help, its not a one size fits all. Threads like this help as different techniques can be adopted and tried
Mine is to pick apart the thought through mindfulness and then meditate out any leftover negativity |

My solution has been to learn to not give them power. I'm feeling shit? That's fine, there's nothing wrong with that, I may want to feel happy but I don't need to. My body will still work whatever I'm feeling.
It can be hard but there's two states I try to avoid, one is what I call wallowing in the thoughts. That is when I start believing not only that these thoughts are objectively true but that there's nothing I can do about it and nothing will ever get better etc etc.
The other is believing I need to fight these feelings, that the only way to get through is somehow defeating them. This is invariably impossible and cycles straight back to wallowing.
Instead I try to ignore the thoughts. Recognise that they are only thoughts in my head and may or may not bear any relationship to reality but either way they will change. I'll have a work call that will distract me, I'll read a joke that makes me laugh, I'll go for a run and my mind is too occupied with that to think shit etc etc. No matter how bad it feels it always passes off only temporarily so until then crack on head with your miserable nonsense, I'm just going to ignore you until you sort yourself out. Give me a call when you've stopped this nonsense.

Exercise helps me, but I would highly recommend talking to a councillor. I've been a few times and it's really helped some of my issues.
Everyone uses them. My friend is a psychologist and both her and most of her colleagues go to see their own therapist too. |
