If we had equality there wouldn't be any commoners.

Due to us having a Monarchy I’m sure we are ‘subjects’ to the Queen.

I prefer commoner to subject

I don't use it. But think it's unhealthy that people grow up viewing others as more important than they are.

Yes, I think we should get rid of words so no one gets offended.

Hope not, at our medieval shows Dave has been asked not to greet the audience as, "ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls". So instead uses, "Lords, Ladies and commoners".

If we can't say commoners, we're stuffed - unless anyone can think of an authentic alternative.

At the end of the day they are just words, and if we as people are so soft they they cause such major issues then we are doomed. I for one couldn't give a rats arse what anybody called me, and have no problem with others having their view, we all go the same way in the end.

I don't disagree.

Although I think words can be powerful things.

They are only as powerful as people allow Them to be.

Not really. Unless you can live in a world without them, which puts you back about 3,000 years ago.

Not true, it's up to people how they use them, it's up to people how they view them. The words don't change just how they are interpreted. In todays climate there is barely anything that can be said without offending someone.

It doesn't only apply to social distinctions.

I know of a school that distinguishes the student as Scholars and Commoners with the scholars, historically, being of the 'lower' social order.

Now, it simply means the few bright boys and the mass common ones.

Since we are circling back to previous comments, they are only powerful if people allow them to be.

I've heard a few people claim similar things but it's invariably proved to be bravado.

It's easy to claim the 'sticks & stones' argument but in reality words matter.

I don't dispute that they matter, they are the basis of our language, but as sentient beings it is up to us to decide if a word or combination thereof are really worth getting distressed over, and for me, personally being called a commoner really is 'just words!!'

I'd compromise in that some words matter more than others. If I don't care for an opinion then yes, the words don't matter.

On the other hand you can still be affected by them even if you ignore them by how the people around you are responding to them.

Anyway that's too many words for now
