Depends what it is for and look for how much warranty it has
I would go for neither and opt for the Milwaukee brand. That comes with a 5 year warranty over Dewault for example....

If it's cordless and he already has a certain battery system then use that system, if it's corded then Makita all hubby uses and he is a builder,

Yes! This. And to add always look how much replacement battery packs are.
I bought some spurious batteries quarter of price and just as good so happy days

MAKITA if it's a cordless drill he's looking for. a 18 Volt 3.0 AH LITHIUM battery one is a brilliant drill. Carpenter here. |

"Milwaukee
Milwaukee all day long for me
Milwaukee. I use then for heavy industrial and mining gear and the piss all over Snap-On, Mac and Dewalt.
The warranty is far better also. "
Yes they do. The quality of Snap On has gone downhill and at £200 for a replacement battery you can only source from Snap On it is a rip off considering the batteries for the milwaukee equivalent is something like £65 and can be sourced from Screwfix |

Try to find one which helps in the work your OH does. Things like chemicals and oils for example make the handle and trigger disintegrate over time and go sticky and soft. Most drills above are good for the building trade. If its screwing an impact driver is an excellent. Ladder work, something lighter. |

Bosch for me first choice, Makita second choice. But they all make multiple models so best to be clear about your requirements then target the most suitable one within your price range. |

I love makita kit, I had a crazy set until some lowlife pond scum took a liking to it, on dewalt now due to getting a great deal when having to replace everything at once, its ok kit but I do miss my makita stuff |

I guess it would depend on what you trying to do with the drill you best bet would probably be to find a tutorial for the task your trying to carry out that way they will show you how to use the drill for that specific task and tell you what drill bits ect you would need for the material you are drilling. I hope that helps a bit |

I have DeWalt
It was a choice between that or Makita
I looked for the best deal on the ITS website
Look for the best deal on their site (or any others) deals will include, carry case, extra batteries, tool bundles etc |

Dewalt
Never been a fan of Makita. Some stuffs good but some tools you pick up (ie battery planer, multi tool etc…) and think, that’s an absolute sack of shit compared to other platforms. Plus I think the battery’s are poor in comparison. Always seems to drain faster than other platforms |

Makita over DeWalt (although there's nothing wrong with DeWalt, just not as robust as they were) if you can stretch to it Milwaukee. However, if OH has lots of a particular brand already, get another one of those as they seem to come as a system now, so batteries are interchangeable between that particular brand and battery management is easier. |

Doesn't really matter which drill you learn on. More important is the drill bits. Make sure they match the screws and grip the screws. Don't cheap out on the drill bits either or you'll buy and buy again. Grab some old wood and practice. Better to damage a piece of scrap than the job you want to do. If drilling into walls be wary of pipes and electric cables buried. Metal stud detector can help. |
