As I’ve gotten older my physical health has become so important to me though now I’m in my mid-forties what worked in my 30’s isn’t starting to have the same impact and I know I’m not alone with this.
The forums are a great place to have open discussing so let’s have this one.
What are you guys doing as you get older to keep your physical health in order?

My knees have been pretty screwed for a long time so things like running aren’t great which is a shame as I used to enjoy it. I used to swim a lot but don’t have the opportunity now. I try to do a good amount of yoga/Pilates to stay flexible and walking/hiking for aerobic stuff and I just got a bicycle, though I know I should do more HIIT or something like that.
I know my blood pressure and cholesterol are risky if I have too much of the wrong foods, so I control that just with diet. Otherwise I’m pretty ok, don’t smoke, drink occasionally, I take some vitamins and supplements like fish oil if I’m feeling crappy but that’s about it. (I’m 58 by the way) |

Always enjoyed fitness running gym eating healthy never been a big drinker just had no time when kids where younger but back to now take no supplements be us face cream and try to get enough sleep. |

Running was my thing till my back spasmed a few year back and I've just never been able to get back into it so when I do go to the gym it's anything that can build my core, also trying swimming again.
Supplements; zinc gives me an overall boost, magnesium is good for the restless legs when it happens. |

I’ve just hit 40 but my knees are that of an 80 years old due to excessive rugby, I don’t do as much cardio these days other than walking and the bike in the gym but doing weights helps burn the fat just as well I find.
Sensible diet proteins and fish and you’re sorted for vitamins |

It’s interesting you list nothing but quick fixes
Get your weight down to a healthy level through dieting
Perform some form of LISS cardio for minimum 150 minutes a week.
Some form of resistance training 2-3 times a week
Eat a better diet with more micronutrients
Get enough water
Get enough sleep |

Testosterone levels drop the older you get, that can make you feel shitty, lethargic, low libido, excess fat around the waist ect.... might be worth getting your bloods done, make sure alls good! About 5 years ago stopped drinking beer and changed to gin.
Currently stopped drinking totally and I’m on a V-shred type diet which is losing me a lot of weight and getting my body back to what it was years ago. Cooking from scratch and eating clean food has become the norm.
It’s important to look after your body more as you get older and I also want to look my best for C too…keeping her interested in me

Currently stopped drinking totally and I’m on a V-shred type diet which is losing me a lot of weight and getting my body back to what it was years ago. Cooking from scratch and eating clean food has become the norm.
It’s important to look after your body more as you get older and I also want to look my best for C too…keeping her interested in me

I run, swim, lift heavy and eat well. But I’m feeling I can take it even further as I get older |

I run, climb mountains and enjoy the fresh air as much as possible, I eat as healthy as I want to. But I still enjoy eating crap to. I carry lots of old injuries that give me niggles but intend to just train through them. |

I am happy the only I wish is more sex trying to find good dating apps
Or good bar and spa and club in london to go to

Yes no processed foods at all…meats with veg, very little carbs - for example eating home made turkey burgers wrapped in lettuce leaves rather than a bun, nuts instead of chocolate, seeds and spices in foods to keep the metabolism fired…

What I do is cook from fresh,what is fresh well something that has been frozen not past the period plenty of herbs natural resources a balance of vitamins from natural resources fruit and vegetables exotic a better boost and exercise whether cardiovascular, weights a combination a suburb circulation helps the body filter where everything goes that is needed I'm 48 soon 49 and physically fit in strength and stamina and Don't feel my age more like 21 |

No extra protein (only through diet)
Callisthenics (2/3 times a week)
Trail running (25-30k a week)
Regular sports
Still drink but only a small amount once a week. Coffee only first thing in the morning.

Posture has deteriorated for me due to the last few years working at a desk with fewer and fewer site visits.
I have started riding again(horses) as it requires good posture to balance on the horses back and thigh strength. All difficult to maintain (for me) at my age. |

Riding is an exercise in and of itself really. But planks and leg lifts help further improve balance. Usually anything that is good for your core is good for balance and this leads to better posture. |

Hey there OP! Apologies for a late post... been a crazy week!
The key for me is preload and recovery.
Bottom line, as we get older (and you and I have precisely the same challenge) the recovery time between heavy gym sessions lengthens to a point where new gains are super hard, and you risk overtraining and injury.
Back in the day I was all about low reps of full max out weights, drop sets and training to exhaustion 3 times weekly with stretch days and light cardio in between. Just can't do it any more as recovery now takes 3 days from that kind of abuse, and as a result I've lost somewhere between 4 and 5 inches off my chest, 2 to 3 off arms etc etc.
Fortunately, there is a solution that allows you to maintain sensible bulk, and decent definition (which is also hard as your metabolism slows).
My routine these days involves a mix of high impact cardio (typically 1km sprint interval training on a rowing machine for warm up and warm down) interspersed with medium weights but using the German system (10 sets of 10 reps) SLOWLY - and never fully release the weight at the end of each rep... catch it and start the next rep before you allow the weight to hang in your hand you'll be suprised at the difference a continuous set makes even with low weights.
Once a week I do a long row - somewhere between 10 and 20km; Aim for 25 to 30 strokes per min for an hour or two. Can recommemd a few playlists for that - linkin park features heavily in mine for motivation and timing as the tracks vary in tempo, so kinda sprint interval anyway.
Nutrition is less important with this mix of cardio and resistance training as the fat just melts away, and definiton more than makes up for the lack of mass.
I have it on good authority (phd level nutritionist) that the great majority of supplements are just going to get pissed away as your body doesnt need them in such extreme volumes - so forget BCAs etc... waste of money.
There are 2 supplements that work:
1. Creatine - ideally already in a protein shake (most of them contain it, so you wont need to buy extra). This preloads the muscle strands with water, and lets you train harder. Drink lots of water as you train, and after also or you may get a dehydration headache (the muscle strands dont care where the water comes from, but they are having it!)
2. Caffeine - ideally a stiff espresso before you train as it wakes you up and motivates you to smash it.
That's it. Everything else is a waste of time. (Expecting abuse on this, but that is my experience - and over the last 25 years I've tried just about everything except steroids in my desparation to escape from being stick thin).
Pre workout, load with slow release carbs so that you have the energy to train hard. (Porridge, bananas etc)
Post workout and on the critical rest and stretch days, give your body the building blocks it needs to recover by eating well - and drinking lots of water.
Relax.
Sleep well.
Eat well - but normally.
Eat all the fat you like, but never put sugar in your stomach at the same time, as the insulin spike tells your body to store the fat for hard times ahead (a physiological trait that allowed our hunter gatherer ancestors to survive winter by fattening up in the autumn fruit glut). Skip desert... Ice cream is way out! (50% fat, 50% sugar)
Find yourself an exceptionally gorgeous partner and burn off a few more cardio calories in a more enjoyable way - and in the same stroke find the motivation to smash it even harder in the gym for her pleasure... (I figure you already worked this bit out btw )

Definitely agree with this, climbed snowdon yesterday 26,000 steps, over 3000 ft elevation. 4:30 hours fitness. Gyms have their place and are ideal for targeting certain aspects of fitness, also ideal when the weathers terrible. But personally I run, climb, walk and enjoy lifting logs and chopping wood. I get bored in the Gum very easily and after 40 mins I’m ready for leaving. |

Very true both - and yeah.
Definitely better to get outside in the real world if you can. I used to love mountaineering and fell running - 30 to 40 miles in a day with the wind blowing you inside out... the lakes... snowdonia - pennines... very hard to beat!

I’ve found that taking multi vitamins, eating well and exercise are my baseline for general health.
I do find that it harder to see improvements as I’ve gotten older and recovery times are longer but that I plateau from various patterns of exercise faster too.
I’ve found that mixing up what I do, how I do it and pushing the intensity gently (10% increase per week maximum) helps to keep me from injury and on the upward curve of improvement |

I cross train far more now than I did in my twenties and thirties. Swim twice a week, turbo and bike sessions and hit the track once a week with a local club. Along with plenty of running and limited gym work.
I've paralleled that with good nutrition, very little alcohol and better sleep. Never touched a supplement and not convinced of their worth.
Perhaps set yourself targets for the year. Whether that is faster run times, park runs or perhaps body building competitions? Most of us work far better with a goal in mind rather than just losing weight or looking better in the mirror. Great discussion OP.
A few proactive things, I made the decision in my 30s to retrain out of hard manual labour so my body particular back and knees is great still.
Have always eaten well, fasted from food regularly and do Qigong to look after internal organs. I take 1000mg Vit C every day with a pint of water to prevent coughs, colds etc
Fitness wise I’ve toned down my goals as I’ve hit 50, more to avoid injuries obsessive diet ! but still stay fit and strong. I run 10k a week and just do the compounds 3 times a week in the gym and have a PT come to me once a week for weighted cardio.
I also get my full bloods done quarterly, liver function , prostrate and of course to make sure T levels are staying nice and healthy. It’s not just about sex, good T gives you muscle to prevent injury, strong bones , keeps fat off and good mental health etc. The U.K. particularly NHS is tears behind the US on this and its main reason guys get frail in thier 60s |

Blood is blood! You will save about £100 appointment charge! Take early for T , like 7am fasted. Prostrate and liver function take anytime. If you use the NHS you will have to educate them about free vs non free T they don’t get it. |

I take Testosterone as part of a prescribed regime from my Doc. Men’s health is an area that interested her all through her career.
I am regularly blood tested and it’s given me a real nice pep up. In terms of my energy and sex life they are very positively affected. Morning wood is sometimes almost painful.
I have started taking collagen for my joints but I’m not sure it does any good. Might be a placebo affect but they feel better. But that could be down to weight loss and less impact as I have switched to my peloton and road bike to stay fit.

My diet is pretty much always on point. I don't take supplements apart from creatine if I am in a heavy lifting phase as it helps me recover better.
As I've gotten older the best thing I did was remember I'm not 23 every time I hit the gym. I'm not trying to hit PBs all the time. Amd I change my training up every 3 months just to keep my body adapting. Adding way more mobility into my routines too. |

Was really hard to make the decision to not pursue strength improvements anymore because I know I can still but the cost is so much harder at 50 than at 30. Unless I’m meticulous with diet, sleep etc I will get fatigue , muscle tears and risk other injuries lifting so heavy. I wanna be able to eat normally not measure everything and want to significantly reduce red meat to protect my internal organs from diseases as I age |

The only real change I’ve done is cut my carb intake especially processed wise. And f I do I use my old PTI gurus advice from the army. That if it’s white it’s full of shite, if it’s brown get it down. I stay away from most powdered products and just look forward a more natural food intake to get what I need.
Post work out drink is always milk, has everything your body needs after a training session and is cheaper that buying a sports recovery drink.
Tablet wise I don’t really take anything. But a multi vitamin drink.
I’m not preaching health, my jobs always been very physical orientated and I’m carrying old injuries and scars, but I don’t think I’m going to bad. I’ve never been slim down be always been a bear. But I’ve ran marathons. And climbed mountains. The only new addition to my routine is I’ve been thinking of starting doing a basic level of yoga just to aid with old injuries and my range of movement.

I'm mostly trying to lift weights and do steady state cardio to remain fit but would like to incorporate some yoga to try and ensure flexibility in my joints so they aren't in pain from the weights.

Breakfast of porridge, cod liver oil , blueberries,chia & hemp seed and a dab of honey .
Dinner mostly always of fish and veg.
Training is mostly skipping , core work for arms and stomach, leg stances but ALL at my own pace and if l don't feel right starting l don't do it , l listen to my body and always train in the morning as it sets me up for the day. |

In terms of Diet, mine is balanced. I've dramatically cut down the shit food I eat and also my intake of Dairy and Red Meat as lowered quite considerably. I eat more fish, particularly salmon than I ever done.
To lose weight, being in a calorie deficit is just as important as exercise, if not more so.
In terms of exercise, it depends what your going for.
I've enjoyed cardio immensely from someone who couldn't do run a mile in Feb, I can now to do a 10km comfortably. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week. Rowing machine, cross trainer, stair master and treadmill are my go to's, 3 days a week and the other two I devote to core work and upper body. But I find that tedious. I'm currently looking for a way into that, that I don't find mind numbing.
I also try to mix it up, I'll skip a gym a couple of times a week if I can get a good hike or outdoor activity in, such as rugby or football.
I don't do supplements. I tried fat burners at the beginning but I found that played havoc with my bowel movements.

Yes it did - it said they don't always make a difference as there's so many types. They're was an interesting article in the guardian about it which inspired me to do more research. |

I was an athlete when I was younger so had the benefit of muscle memory. After roughly ten years away from hard training I suddenly got the taste for it again two years ago.
I knew that my legs could no longer take the hard poundings that comes from road running so we bought a spin bike and weights and set up a gym at home. Use free YouTube spin classes combined with a heart rate monitor to ensure maximum effort. Also mix up training including weight sessions and concentrate on various parts of the body each day.
Don't take any form of supplements as rely on healthy eating to ensure I get all the necessary nutrients needed.
Drink plenty of water and rarely if ever drink alcohol. |

I think the supplements business preys on people looking for shortcuts, when the longer route (good balanced diet and good balanced exercise over extended period of time) sounds like hard work.
People want hacks, shortcuts, cheats, tricks, fast results, so that’s what the fitness industry and supplements industry promise them. |

I don’t really make health the priority over appearance but at 38 might have to think about it soon. Train 4x per week and generally in the 10-15k step range in usual work day. Eat whatever like but and prioritise protein. |

You certainly don't get as much bang for the buck with weightlifting at 45 compared to 25 or 35. Some protein powder and creatine supplementation helps.
Better sleep and a number of vitamins notably zinc and Vit D to keep the immune system strong.

Stress does play a huge role in physical health but yet as men we are expected to not show it or ask for help " joining a men's group was a huge thing for me... I think men are often expected to hide from public, and we've lost the private "men's only" spaces ... Hence the current men's MH issues.

"You certainly don't get as much bang for the buck with weightlifting at 45 compared to 25 or 35. Some protein powder and creatine supplementation helps.
Better sleep and a number of vitamins notably zinc and Vit D to keep the immune system strong.
I don't smoke and rarely drink so no need to ration vices "
Zinc, Zinc and Magnesium or ZMA, worked really well after heavy lifting , for me at least it seemed to induce that deep sleep that aids recovery and Testosterone production. If you can do just one thing then get your deep sleep increased, it fixes so many things. You can track on apps now, I’m right on the upper end about 15-18%. I used to be around 8-10% when I first started tacking it. Chocolate and raw cacao can help too, but also training heavy later in the evening and taking sauna, hot tub after so when you hit the pillow you instantly fall asleep |

"As I’ve gotten older my physical health has become so important to me though now I’m in my mid-forties what worked in my 30’s isn’t starting to have the same impact and I know I’m not alone with this.
The forums are a great place to have open discussing so let’s have this one.
What are you guys doing as you get older to keep your physical health in order?

I used to be heavily I to health and fitness when I was 20-24, lockdown happened and I have gotten super lazy!
Anyways.. I think for me, I've noticed that stress is a huge factor for anything, so I guess taking the time to focus on yourself? Whether that be meditation, stretching, music? I found to be extremely helpful in keeping my mind at ease and in affect having my body follow
Stress does play a huge role in physical health but yet as men we are expected to not show it or ask for help joining a men's group was a huge thing for me... I think men are often expected to hide from public, and we've lost the private "men's only" spaces ... Hence the current men's MH issues.
