When to switch the ignition to off
Jump to: Newest in thread
When should people turn their vehicle engines off, whilst waiting? My car automatically does it but older cars don't.
When is it fuel efficient to not leave the engine running vs the fuel taken to restart the engine? |

I think it’s always more efficient to switch off, the only time not to is when you’re in slow moving traffic which is stop-start for ages. An older car’s starter motor isn’t built for running too often. |

In reality it makes no difference to economy what so ever.
What difference it makes is emissions start stop was purely invented to improve air quality and lower the co2 emissions. |

"Do you use less fuel if you cruise down hill with your car in neutral with your clutch down ?
It is actually illegal it is called coasting. "
I never said I did it, I heard an older man talking about it last week. I thought I would ask a wider group to clarify. So less of the side sneer glances |

"Do you use less fuel if you cruise down hill with your car in neutral with your clutch down ?"
No, at idle it gives fuel to the engine but with your foot off the gas and going downhill the fuel supply is shut off |

It was listening to one of those things that I couldn't join in because I was absolutely clueless |

CO2 emissions are a direct result of fuel usage, so if it reduces the CO2 it’s also improving economy. |

Found it.....
Is coasting against the law?
While it is not illegal to coast downhill, if you get into an accident and you are deemed not to be fully in control of your vehicle, you would have committed an offence.

And pretty much impossible to ever prove. |

So that makes it ok, comit a road traffic offence is ok ad long as you dont get caught? |

Theoretically yes but its purpose is for cleaner air quality, idle emmisions are that stringent on new cars that is the only purpose of it. The extra fuel used to start means it makes zero difference to economy |

Personally i wouldn't like to test that theory out as most modern cars track telemetry for diagnostic purposes. So ECU can probably tell you if you were coasting at the time of the accident |

You've missed the bit where it isn't an offence |

And I NEVER said I did it. It was a question to a conversation I was in with an elderly couple, that I didn't know if it was true. Hence my QUERY |

"I think people parked and waiting should switch off. Someone was idling outside my window for over 5 minutes.
"
I think we're supposed to switch off, when not driving.
It's interesting the other comments, such as our newer cars having auto shutoff, due to emissions targets. |

The fuel saving wouldn't really be worth it unless you're driving something huge. With older vehicles the aim with fuel efficiency would be to be as steady at possible - minimal accelerating and braking, aiming to keep your foot in the same position.
With newer vehicles it's probably a little different.
But essentially each time you press your foot down you're using more fuel. |

Also sensible when stuck in long delays, especially on hot days. |

Aw thanks. However, I am not brave enough to tell the older chap he is wrong, I'll just keep smiling and nod |

Also with your clutch depressed for so long you will put a lot of strain on the Thrust (no pun lol) bearings and all the springs involved in the clutch system. |

It isn't illegal at all, but it is called coasting.
Hypermilers use it to improve efficiency on economy runs |
