I’m seeing many things online saying it’s not as common/easy to get infected with chlamydia/gonerreah from just receiving oral in my case (blowjob) … has anyone ever contracted one of these after receiving oral |

From the NHS website:
You can catch an STI if you have just one sexual partner. However, the more partners you have, the greater the risk of catching an infection.
STIs commonly caught through oral sex are:
gonorrhoea
genital herpes
syphilis
human papillomavirus (HPV)
Infections less frequently passed on through oral sex include:
chlamydia
HIV
hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C
genital warts
pubic lice |

"Very few will ever admit to catching an sti, but it does happen from just oral. "
Everything you read says it’s possible but no one has ever heard of it happening. None of the testing services check for it either |

A test isn't going to be able to tell how you've caught it, just that you have |

They do in Wales if you ask for it. I always order the full set: vaginal, rectal & oral swabs and blood for HIV. |

Yes, though at my clinic you'd do them yourself, too. I've been ordering the kits since the beginning of the year. It's really convenient. |

The symptoms of oral STDs will differ from the genital version (with the exception of warts). Gonorrhoea of the throat does not mean you have gonorrhoea of the reproductive tract and you would have throat symptoms rather than symptoms in your genitals. If someone has gonorrhoea of the throat, for example, they may have no other STDs at all, or they may have many others. Untreated gonorrhoea can eventually become a systematic issue and cause damage in a local away from the initial location of infection, though.
Syphilis is a bit different - once it hits your bloodstream, it can cause systemic disease that eventually affects the brain, if untreated. It can do this no matter where the location of the initial infection is. |

We can't get home test kits in this part of Greater Manchester. Only U25s can get home Chlamydia tests and that's it. GUM clinics still have very restrictive opening and need to book, no drop ins unless in certain demographic groups. |

Unilateral conjunctivitis (the second eye can become infected after 2 or 3 days through cross-contamination) is often caused by chlamydia or herpes simplex virus infection (also it's a presentation of SARS-CoV-2 virus).
It makes for an interesting consultation before passing on information on the hours and location of the nearest GUM clinic.
I suspect that interesting conversations also occur with boyfriend / husband when the patient comes back from the GUM clinic with the diagnosis.

However... I'm possibly more active than most.... and never caught anything.... I am tested every 4 to 6 weeks depending on how busy I've been |

The short answer to your initial question is yes you can catch a sti via oral.
You are then talking about relative risk.
This will vary from disease to disease but a good rule of thumb is that risk increases the more internal and the lower you go.
So in order of increasing risk you could go
Abstinence
Holding hands
Kissing
Fingers in vagina
Oral on female
Oral on male
Females sharing vaginal toys (or fingering multiple ladies)
Vaginal sex
Anal sex
But if you wanted to apply any numbers to that you would need a better source.

It doesn't matter what protection you use if you are not getting regularly tested, simple! |

As a point to contemplate ....
If you kiss someone you can catch covid-19, a cold, flu, ebola, meningitis, dengue fever, zika, yellow fever, rabies, rubella, polio, mumps and glandular fever.
So whilst you are avoiding STIs think about other infections and how they are transmitted. |

If you remove the stigma surrounding stds then you'll see it's simply another case of life without risk doesn't exist!
You can catch all sorts of things during regular non sexual activity, colds, flu, infections etc without stigma. You risk car accident each time you drive or take the bus etc.
Take precautions, buckle up, wear a mask, don't wipe back to front, get an MOT!
Getting tested regularly is the only way to take responsibility for your own sexual health and how you take precautions is up to you. I take the daily Prep pill to avoid hiv infection for example.
Wearing a condom for oral is a bit over the top as far as I'm concerned and I never agree to it when I've been asked.
To answer the question, yes there is a very slight chance you may catch or give someone an std through oral but it's unlikely to be serious.
Since I started taking Prep and getting tested more regularly it's very liberating and I feel freer to have more of the sex I truly want. Life is for living. |
