 . My friends and I have been laughing about this. We'd be fine going forward in a straight line but we'd need to travel in pairs for the reversing bit. .

would love to be gainfully employed but at my age and with my health challenges plus the fact I spent since 2006 caring for a disabled rellie who recently died so no up to date reference means I will be very lucky to find anything.
Things are tough for so many and nobody has the right to judge. |

Care
Agriculture
Hospitality
The first one normally needs an HGV licence and the rest require a good deal of strength/physical stamina, which many people wanting work don’t have. |

When I first gave up work I saw it as a needed short break to reset my head. Since then things have spiralled a bit and realised my head was worse than it was.
Would love to be working but need to work more on myself to believe I have things to offer in work sense
Mostof the time I was not working was not claiming

The majority of people receiving UC/benefits are in work. How many jobs would you like them to take on, still raise their children, care for elderly parents and other family members and find time for sleep?
For every £1 earned the government reclaims 63p. I bet that's a higher tax rate than nearly everyone telling people on benefits to work/work harder.

My Tesco delivery driver was telling me that Tesco* were offering staff £2000 to do HGV tests/driving but he was already working long hours and apparently they really max you out (with work). He wasn’t going to take them up on it.
I work in domicilliary care and I can tell you that we are all struggling to find carers. You get folk applying but 9 times out of 10 they don’t turn up to the interview. Care is not the best paid job in the world I grant you, but it’s not the worst paid job either.

I retired 4 years ago at the age of 52.
Around the last few months have been board n thought maybe I'll go back to work.
So a few weeks ago I decided to dip my toe in the water I applied for just 1 job via indeed.
Within 20 minutes had a reply to call in Monday.
Had an interview n within the first 5 minutes of the 1 hour interview was offered the job n along with a pay rise after 6 weeks if all goes well.
So is it still hard to get a job these days (I'm not saying it taking the piss, I really don't know).
Maybe of a case of perfect timing by me.

I know of some firms who will sponsor you to do the HGV, after so long they right it off, but if you leave the firm before the agreed time period then you have to reimburse them. Sounds reasonable for both parties. One firm I know has always had this as a policy , they are currently fully staffed. |

This - even though your retirement age is at least 67 so you have 10 years of work to offer getting an employer to see that is almost impossible. It’s very disheartening.

I'd love to get back into work. It does me no good at all to be at home inside my head all day.
But there are days I actually cannot get out of bed. As in, can barely move except to curl up. And on those days I often can't think, let alone speak, and end up needing to take painkillers that knock me so far sideways that if I'm not sleeping I'm in a fog.
That might not happen for weeks, months even. But it could be every day for a week.
No employer in their right mind would employ me. Yet more often than not you wouldn't know that I'm living with more physical pain than a lot of people have ever felt, I look completely healthy.
And it's attitudes like yours OP, that mean I'm scared to ask for the help of the benefits system. I'm just lucky I've got a small (tiny in fact) other income and don't really eat. |
