I've just read on the BBC News website an interesting article on the discovery of humans remains that possibly are King Richard lll. They've gone off to be DNA tested.
An historic occasion if they turn out to be the former King's |

"In a carpark near Leicester! Although he was killed near Bosworth field so not impossible."
His body on Henry Tudor's orders was taken from Bosworth Battle Field to Grey friay Church in Leicester where his body was laid to rest. That was recorded as fact but up and til recently the exact position of the Church could not be accurately identified. The dig site is in to its third week. |

"Did I read the remains had an arrow in it's skull.
"
The skeleton has a curved spine. Richard was described as having slight deformities to his spine. The skull has signs of receiving a severe trauma in 2 places consistent with injuries that Richard suffered and yes there an iron arrowhead found under skull. They have traced a living relative in Canada and are now comparing DNA to ascertain if the remains are of the King. Tests may take a few weeks to complete. |

"Just read this, very interesting indeed, silly question maybe, but how will they prove it's him or not?
DNA testing."
Ok, but whose DNA will they compare it with? |

No problem. If you follow the links on the BBC news page of the story you will find more in depth articles on the story and more importantly the research prior to the dig. |

Erm, the stooped or hunched back are inventions by old shakespear arent they?
I must admit the wars of the roses hold very little interest for me. Had they found the remains of Harold Godwinson, however, that would be cool. |

Well it turns out the skeleton remains are indeed that of King Richard 111.
It's not everyday the body of an English King is identified.. A historic day for England and I'm sure Leicester Tourist Board will rubbing their hands as they announced his remains are to interred in Leicester Cathedral.. |

Can Leicester decide that? Just wonder whether Parliament might have a _iew on where he should be finally laid to rest. As head of the House of York I suspect there might be a lot of people lobbying for Yorkminster, and Westminster would also be a natural contender. |

Good point. And in the tradition of all good Catholic wakes, I hope a bloody big party is planned for this evening! |

"The remains of Richard III will be reinterred on 26 March 2015, officials at Leicester Cathedral have announced.
It'll be shown on Channel 4."
I've always felt York had the stronger claim to his remains. I also want to know how his appeal against that overdue parking ticket turned out. |

I think Ch4 put the money up back before anyone even knew there was a body, never mind whose it was. |

If Time Team had been on the job they'd have back filled the hole after 3 days and gone to the pub. |

"Should be York ! Why would he want to be burried where he was defeated ! He was the head of the house of York !"
Can't think of many reasons for people to visit Leicester so if this helps attract tourists etc I can see why they are so keen to keep him there. York will always have millions of tourists so why I can see lots of reasons for him to go back to York, I would leave him in Leicester. |

"Should be York ! Why would he want to be burried where he was defeated ! He was the head of the house of York !"
The fact that he was from the house of York has little to do with being from York or Yorkshire. In fact most people living in Yorkshire at the time held their allegiance to the house of Lancaster, as did most areas of the North of England. The main base for house of York's support was further south in the midlands and south. |

Correct for the first stages of the Wars, but less so towards the end. Richard's powerbase was in the North. He effectively ran that half of the realm for his brother |

This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this...
...fucking council car park in shitty Leicester!? |
