A friend is in digital marketing and says that even stuff you type or say on WhatsApp as an example will be picked up in algorithms that will then display ads based on what you’ve said…

Yeah I've done a DM course and learned that basically EVERYTHING is about building the customer profile. So if it's any consolation, all this data is only gathered to sell us stuff, and not necessarily to track our every movement. |

"Not so much watching, but;
Your phone does track your viewing habits, keywords etc and displays adverts based on those parameters.
This is why I use an adblock & turn off app permissions. "
How do you explain random conversation without habit, keyword and never search. |

His face looks like it spent most of the day in there. |

That's how coincidences work.
You see or hear hundreds of adverts all over the place, and give none of them a second thought.
It's only when 'you' do something that relates to them that your brain tries making the connection.
It used to happen with TV ads all the time too. You don't think they then aired an advert to thousands of people, just because of something you did or said do you? |

I was chatting with a friend here about coincidence this week, what a coincidence! The probability of many coincidences is often much less than we think and combined with confirmation bias it's easy to see connections that are actually pure chance. |

You also have the opposite thing that people hate to think about.
We are predictable and easy to manipulate.
Why was City cleaning his car? It's decent weather and the end of the week, thousands of people probably did it, as it's obviously the best time to do it.
He may have also seen the advert for the hoover before, and 'that' put the idea in his head. He wouldn't have remembered it, as there was no reason too. The only reason he did this time was that it connected with his recent action.
