"Always makes me snigger. Does it mean they are good at the 100 metres sprint or any other track and field events like discus or pole vault. Just wondered "
It means that if you are overweight, out of shape and unfit - you are likely to be ignored if/when you send a random wink or message to a person/couple who describe themselves as athletic.

It's more about looking like the perceived athletic body, rather than your sporting or fitness prowess. Defined muscles, but not overly so. Maybe gym bod would be better? I class myself as slim, even though I'm fit a reasonably quick on the bike. Not athletic

Your 5k time is very good sub 6 minute miling but half marathon time should be well under 1hr30m!" no room for slouching |

It means that you don't need to warn mountain rescue or the ambulance service that you're going on a hike. |

I doubt there are many who can run an 18 min 5k who don't have an athletic body.
OP to me an athletic body is one you only get through some form of exercise. That can be the field and track sports but can equally be lots of others, from football to swimming or even a physically demanding job.
If you simply don't eat very much you can be slim but to be athletic you need the muscle growth that only comes with exercise of those muscles.

I couldn't run the length of myself and haven't been to a gym in years. I've hiked the highest peaks in Ireland, Scotland and Wales numerous times so in my opinion that allows me to use the adjective.
Previously I would have chosen average but I don't see myself as average anymore and I'm comfortable using athletic. Like any description it should be respected and not mocked. |

To me athletic is the least loosely termed body descriptor as it has clear parameters regarding it’s definition. Whether or not they’re followed is a different matter but there are clear definitions.
An athlete has a high level of physical fitness and is often slim and toned if not muscular depending upon the sport that they partake in. People who attend gyms regularly aren’t necessarily athletic according to the definition, because they don’t always have high cardiovascular efficiency. Although that’s a matter for debate.
Darts players aren’t athletes |

Maybe we need some new definitions?
I spend too much time at the gym.
I like to keep fit.
I don't do enough exercise.
I love my food.
I love my food too much.
What ever labels are used, our own perception of body type isn't necessarily going to match someone else's. Maybe fab should ditch them and we can rely on pics to decide if the attraction is there |

If he can’t catch you, he’ll probably just stick 3 darts in your spinal cord in a very tidy formation, then wait for you to fall |

Maybe they pole vault into the bedroom. Entertaining, if nothing else. |

It means you look like an athlete... be it runner, gymnast, football player, rugby player tennis player, basketball player, boxer/wrestler, swimmer, cricket player, snooker player, darts player, bowling player, ping-pong player, chess player... or those guys that compete in "who eats the most food" . Basically we all look like athletes |
