This type of behaviour has detrimental effects on how women in the workplace view themselves and their promotion opportunities. It is so archaic and I for one am constantly surprised at the stupidity of supposedly intelligent employers who imagine that their brand of banter supersedes any laws put in place to protect people. " The problem is some people believe that because *they* don't mind or even like something everyone else *must* have the same opinion. We are all different, have different life experiences and different expectations. I've not read the story nor do I particularly care to, the fact that a judge (who has access to far more info than the newspapers print) has decided this was sexist is more than enough for me. Sexism, like racism, can often be hard to prove or even demonstrate. For example how do you prove that you're boss doesn't consider you as capable as your colleague simply because of your sex? The language he/she uses may be the only objective action that can be picked to demonstrate months/years of unequal treatment. Articles like this are often used to inflame people who are incapable of thinking past the headline. It doesn't mean that asking your best mate "you ok bird?" is somehow illegal or going to get you fined. What it does mean is that the language we use can affect how we make others feel and invariably reflects our biases. If the bias it reflects is sexist towards a member of our staff we can (rightly) expect to be called out. Mr | |||

My colleague called her love once. There was no intention to ridicule and there was no further communication. As I have said when some people are offended by anything the best way is no communication for fear of retribution and subsequent job loss. Is calling someone “ love” really bullying. I agree constant sexual banter to someone who does not like it IS a form of bullying and offensive and deserves discipline but in my experience grown adults tend to have enough common sense to know when they have said the wrong thing to the wrong person.
