I have seen threads on favourite books. I think that's a really hard choice to make whereas choosing a favourite author is fairly easy.
My favourite author is Ted Chiang, even though he hasn't written much. I have read two collections of his short stories and all his stories were peculiar and thought provoking. How about you? |

The Arrival film is based on one of his short stories. If you like those kind of stories, you will enjoy his books. Mostly hard science fiction. |

I've never seen the film  . There are some short stories of his on Amazon for £5:99. Hard science fiction isn't something I've read before, might be worth challenging myself  |

He just has two collections of short stories:
Exhalation
Stories of your life and others
Both are good. Not everyone likes hard science fiction. But it's a good place to start as the stories are short anyway. |

Tom Holt is another Author whose books I very much enjoy

Hard science fiction tries hard to be scientifically accurate. You will see less of spaceships using fancy weapons and more of people having conversations. |

My favourite author is Terry Pratchett. Not wildly high brow but I love his satirical/fantasy/humour blend.
I quite enjoyed Ted Chang but I got bored of the purely mathematical basis for his stories |
