Been watching a few documentaries and have decided that I would like to at least try to change my diet in the direction of veganism. I’m about to make my first vegan food delivery order. Does anyone have any tips on tasty food ideas or how they first found the initial transition?

A friend of mine is a vegan and recommends to anyone thinking of becoming vegan to do it in a phased approach. Vegan 3 times a week and he reckons you will start to feel the benefits and want 4 or 5 times a week and finally all in. I have no idea if that works but thought I would pass it on. Amazing!
My top tip is make sure you are eating enough in the early days (eat more than you usually would) and be prepared for a change in bodily functions that WILL pass
Check out 'the daily dozen' and try to incorporate it into your daily routine. Figure out your B12 +vitD ASAP
Be kind to yourself if you slip up, we're all human and make mistakes.

Nutritional yeast flakes are great for a cheesy hit to pasta dishes, also a good source of Vit B.

Agree with the majority, a phased approach is good but it's much easier to navigate these days.
B12 is very important and unless you're eating foods that are fortified with it you'll need to supplement, which I would do in any case just to be sure.
This goes for meat eaters too, B12 is absorbed by animals when they graze as it exists in the soil etc though decades of modern farming methods has drastically reduced it's presence so much so that cattle feed is fortified (I'm liking this word today) with it.
Other than that, it's as you should be doing now, around 2/3rds of your diet from cards, about a 1/4 from protein and the rest fats, work back from that and you won't go far wrong.

I think that's the right approach, it's a fine line between advocating for a vegan diet and crossing the line into preaching, I try to be the former but I understand that it may be viewed as preaching.

Cheers. A few of the family have gone Vegan (well a couple are probably following an 80% Vegan diet). I've been given a couple of decent recipes which I'll be trying and then I'll be cutting back on red meat for environmental purposes.

I think that spacing your meat intake and ensuring the ratio of meat to vegetables is suitable (1:4 as apposed to the American/SouthAfrican 4:1)
But accept that the tasty days are when you include meat... vegans will try and sell you the idea that vegan meals are tasty but without serious seasoning it will be a bit like kissing your sister, pleasant but not exciting. |

When I went vegan I made the mistake of replacing all my meat and dairy with processed crap. It's very easy to maintain the mindset that you 'need' a meat substitute.
My advice would be to enjoy the more Oriental side of cooking. Stir frys are amazing. Sunday roasts can be a huge pile of veg drowning in gravey.
I found oatmilk worked for me for cereal and teas. I like Weetabix and branflakes so it has that sort of taste.
Smoothies.... Home made... A liquid lunch that's healthy and cheap. What's not to love.
Remember frozen vegan processed food should be treated as a treat..... Not an every day thing.

I have been Vegan for approx 5 years a little more.
Here is what I believe is the best advice I can give you.
1. All food is vegan - unless it is a dead animal or something that came from their body ( it might seem obvious but you will one day ...... f'knell Granny I get it now )
2. There is no great mystery to being a non meat eater. You just eat everything else but not the flesh of an animal or something made with animal bits.
3. Read the labels on EVERYTHING. Milk, Cream, Butter , Animal Fats , Gelatin is sneaked into nearly all foods.
4. Don't go down the 'Plant based' shit for ready meals. They are NOT healthy ( I have one every blue moon )
5. Fuck vegan cheese or vegan butter. It is OIL and potato starch and contains NO PROTEIN as such. It is not a cheese substitute. It is a slab of palm oil and starch ..... full of calories and little goodness.
6. Beware the Quorn. It has egg in it. Unless you find one of the rare places that stock vegan quorn.

I should have done this one first.
Look up which veggies contain the most proteins - I do. ( peas, beans , chickpeas etc )
Look up which greens contain the most vitamin c and b12 etc.
Eat as much as you can raw - it preserves vitamins and nutrients.
Eat your usual fave food. Curry = loads of veg in a curry sauce with grain of your choice rice etc ...... I use quinoa as it has more protein and less carb than rice.
Don't go down the tofu route cos you imagine it's what vegans do. I won't touch it with a ten foot barge pole.
And I agree with midnight. The best sausages are the Richmond ones..... the vegan ones.
Full English for me is .... Richmond sausages, Fried toms, Mushrooms, Hash brown , beans ...... ( just no egg )
Bacon substitutes are shite.
Make your own food.... Check that over the week you got enough protein and don't listen to the crackpots who think that think you have to exist on rice cakes and hummus ......
Roast Dinner ? Exactly the same as usual just don't use animal fats for the spuds.
You don't HAVE to eat stuff that is weird to you.
Gravy Granules are vegan anyway..... the Bisto ones. |

If you don't mind a chorizo style sausage then M&S do a nice version, as for standard yes I hear you, that said, we did try some of those Richmond meat free sausages as we had some meat eating relatives over and the comment was, they couldn't tell the difference between those and the same brand's pork sausages. Best advice I could give you is refer to it as 'plant based' rather than vegan, don't be too strict with yourself or dwell on the moments a bacon sarnie got the better of you and don't force it upon others, in fact don't go on about it too much at all, the worst thing about 'vegans' is the self congratulatory superiority complex coupled with food shaming/attacking others. Fuck that shit! Makes me eat twice the meat in protest!
How do you know when someone is vegan? Don't worry they'll be sure to tell you! (don't be that guy!)
It can be a very colourful and rewarding food adventure if you're clever, enjoy x |

Soy I'm a bit unsure on and I found it a bit flavourless although I appreciate it's probably the spice/seasoning which makes it pleasant. I had sunflower mince last week and it was pretty decent tbh. Been given some to try so will have a go at a M/F chilli/Bolognese. |

If anyone would like to send me some tasty vegan or veggie recipes I'd be grateful, i have looked online but it's better if it has a personal recomendation. I'd like to reduce how much meat i eat.
I was a veggie for over 10 years, probably much longer, often eating vegan anyway. It was many years ago though and it was fairly difficult then. I mostly used a variety of beans, peas and pulses.
However i don't like meat substitutes, quorn type things, nor soya except in margarine type spreads.

Books I use regularly are Bosh, Leon and Fast Easy Vegan.
Leon is mostly quite fancy recipes - taste amazing but can take some time. Fast Easy Vegan is brilliant for quick, cheap meals (she has a good Instagram too).
Bosh is somewhere between.
Easy meat substitute is 'seitan' - basically vital wheat gluten flour (order big packs online), blend with a bit of chickpea flour (or any flour), add in some spices, mix with water, tear into chunks & dry fry. Can then add that to pretty much any sauce - our favourite at the mo is sweet & sour. |

No - I did do to begin with but turns out there's no need! I just tear them into little chunks/balls. Dry fry quickly until the outside is a little brown. Then turn down the temperature to low for maybe 8 minutes. Get on with making sauce in the meantime - then combine sauce & the seitan for a couple of minutes & that's it!
The extra flour lightens it up a bit so not too chewy.
If I want more of a chorizo type texture then I'd still do the steaming method (or sometimes boil in stock instead). |

There are plenty of resources on line, but i wonder if boredom would be the real barrier if the were high carb veggies that you exclude? How long would you do low carb for? |

I went vegan from January last year, I found that the vegan options in the shops were plentiful and on the most part pretty tasty. However heavily laden with salt.
I still have days when I use vegetarian / vegan products and normally pick those options in restaurants, mostly for the reduced fat intake.
I have gone back to chicken and fish now as my main staples as I wanted a better source of protein. I personally just did not see the results I wanted from veggie protiens |

"I have been Vegan for approx 5 years a little more.
Here is what I believe is the best advice I can give you.
1. All food is vegan - unless it is a dead animal or something that came from their body ( it might seem obvious but you will one day ...... f'knell Granny I get it now )
2. There is no great mystery to being a non meat eater. You just eat everything else but not the flesh of an animal or something made with animal bits.
3. Read the labels on EVERYTHING. Milk, Cream, Butter , Animal Fats , Gelatin is sneaked into nearly all foods.
4. Don't go down the 'Plant based' shit for ready meals. They are NOT healthy ( I have one every blue moon )
5. Fuck vegan cheese or vegan butter. It is OIL and potato starch and contains NO PROTEIN as such. It is not a cheese substitute. It is a slab of palm oil and starch ..... full of calories and little goodness.
6. Beware the Quorn. It has egg in it. Unless you find one of the rare places that stock vegan quorn.

I should have done this one first.
Look up which veggies contain the most proteins - I do. ( peas, beans , chickpeas etc )
Look up which greens contain the most vitamin c and b12 etc.
Eat as much as you can raw - it preserves vitamins and nutrients.
Eat your usual fave food. Curry = loads of veg in a curry sauce with grain of your choice rice etc ...... I use quinoa as it has more protein and less carb than rice.
Don't go down the tofu route cos you imagine it's what vegans do. I won't touch it with a ten foot barge pole.
And I agree with midnight. The best sausages are the Richmond ones..... the vegan ones.
Full English for me is .... Richmond sausages, Fried toms, Mushrooms, Hash brown , beans ...... ( just no egg )
Bacon substitutes are shite.
Make your own food.... Check that over the week you got enough protein and don't listen to the crackpots who think that think you have to exist on rice cakes and hummus ......
Roast Dinner ? Exactly the same as usual just don't use animal fats for the spuds.
You don't HAVE to eat stuff that is weird to you.
Gravy Granules are vegan anyway..... the Bisto ones. "
this is the best answer in this thread, im plant based myself. I would like to add on to that, that plant protein is superior to meat protein and this is fact.
second, Herbs are your best friend.

A gift from mother nature herself. literally a tasteless sea that you can put in everything and everything and it literally a godly multi vitamin superfood.
i take it every day and i have energy like never before. gives me glowing youthful skin and my stamina and semen supply doubled/tripled.
Mrs has on a few occasions asked me to stop taking it because she cant handle all that volume in her mouth
Fourth, you dont need supplements. plant based diet will provide you everything you need. You dont need meat. and dont need synthetic shite from holland and barret and all those pharma companies.
sincerely, former heavy meat eater and body builder, 27 years i ate that shite. rotten meat thrown on a grill passed as food......

I did a hit of both really ready made and others. I made a lot of interesting things with cauliflower and those bake in the bag type things.
The first steak I had after those 6 - 7 months though was amazing. That’s partly which chicken and fish (and the occasional filet) are back on my regular menu … I just enjoy the taste of them more than the alternatives. |

easier than you think. let's bring it back to the most simple understanding of why we eat.
we eat to fill our body with nutrition. vitamins, minerals. protein for building. carbs and fat for energy.
vegetables contain, carbs, protein, minerals, vitamins AND fat.
Literally everything you need to survive.
this is fact. look up most greens. they contain all or minimum 3 of those main components.
all vegetables are carbs. i'll say it again. All vegetables are carbs.
low carbs. very low in carbs, depending on the veg.
high carbs are grains. my recommendation would be quinoa, spelt, wild rice.
avoid high glycemic foods aka white carbs aka rice, bread
potatoes.
i'll give you an example meal.
protein : beans ( not heinz baked )
veg: anything you want ( look what vegetables contain what vitamins and minerals, try to get a balance )
carb : quinoa
fat: nuts or avocado
fun fact: you can train your body to use either carbs or fat as energy source
look up the keto diet. ketogenic.
check this though, carbs like quinoa contain decent amounts of protein. so you get a carb protein combo.
then you can add things like spirulina or chia seeds for added protein and minerals.
the possibilities are endless. theres literally several hundreds of different vegetables out there.

No it's not for diabetes . A consultant I saw fir raised cholesterol and thyroid problems advised lower carbs. I wouldn't advise not taking at least a B12 supplement to somebody that's just starting out.
After a while it becomes habit to add in extra grains, greens & beans etc. to your meals but for peace of mind I'd suggest getting a daily supplement at least until you feel confident that you're getting everything you need as part of your normal diet.

Can't speak to your thyroid problem, what I can say, I was on Statins for 10 years and I'm now completely free of them, I make sure I get my bloods checked every year as there is some familial reasons for my former high count plus a shit diet.
I've been under the average for an 50+ adult male for 2 years and I eat a carb rich diet.

Ohhhh well i would say you probably wouldn't need to worry as your cholesterol will (should) flip the other way.. Your bad C should drop and your good C, which comes from Oats. ...
Barley, whole grain, beans, aubergine, okra, nuts, avocado + fruit, should naturally rise, if you were eating correctly... You could skip high carb foods until you see some effect (but do some reseach, I'm no expert x)
I think iodine can help thyroid function, but usually after a certain level, you have no alt but to accept medical intervention |

Yeah exactly for me it was purely about trying something new and seeing what it brought to my health but now I have all the options to hand so some nights I’ll take a vegan option others a meat option ! For me I just find meat a tastier option. |

Yeah ready made stuff is great for convenience, but not good everyday.. I go raw for a few days if I've over done processed food.. Let the acids /alkalines rebalance

I did a hit of both really ready made and others. I made a lot of interesting things with cauliflower and those bake in the bag type things.
The first steak I had after those 6 - 7 months though was amazing. That’s partly which chicken and fish (and the occasional filet) are back on my regular menu … I just enjoy the taste of them more than the alternatives.
I guess it depends on your motivation for going vegan in the first place.. For me it is environment, animals, health... I'll never eat an animal again, there is no need - i have choice, flavour, nutrients in abundance

No it's not for diabetes . A consultant I saw fir raised cholesterol and thyroid problems advised lower carbs. A side effect of course is that I'm far less likely to develop type two diabetes.

I'm fully medicated for my thyroid problems thanks to her. My GP just didn't have the knowledge to get my dosage right and I'd been on too low a dose of thyroxine for about four years. Iodine will have an effect on your thyroid but not enough to correct a serious problem. If I need medication I will happily take it.

I just didn’t feel great, and I don’t like a lot of foods that you need to eat, like beans, which made it really hard to eat a balanced and healthy diet.
I don’t think everyone can do it, so I’m eating some meat, but buying organic and good welfare meat as much as possible.
I do make sure all the products I use are

I was a veggie for over 10 years, probably much longer, often eating vegan anyway. It was many years ago though and it was fairly difficult then. I mostly used a variety of beans, peas and pulses.
However i don't like meat substitutes, quorn type things, nor soya except in margarine type spreads.

Vegan for over 30 years now. It's a lot lot easier now, most people didn't know what it meant 30 years ago!
Anyway, here's my vegan recipe for you.
Get some mushrooms frying in a large pan, add some chillies. You need quite a lot of chillies as adding them this early means you will cook out a lot of their heat. When the mushrooms have lost all their water, add chopped savoy cabbage. Cook until the cabbage is no longer crunchy. Add can of chick peas and can off chopped tomatoes. Add salt. Serve with toasted granary bread.
Once you have this sorted you can mess around with it, try different veg, add mixed herbs and olives and serve with pasta, try leaving out the tomatoes and serve with short grain brown rice.
Basically once you have nailed vegan one pot wonders you can chop and change it as you wish. |

There's no such thing as a hard-core vegan.
You're either a vegan or you aren't.
Life is about compromise as you said, it's all about were we draw that line.
I got vaccinated against covid in the full knowledge it will have been tested on animals, am I happy about this no, but on balance it was the right decision for me.
I choose not to eat meat for many reasons, among them is I don't need to, I can get all I need elsewhere, animal's don't need to be bred solely for the purpose of me eating them.

That would be a non vegan.
I get it, she doesn't eat (I assume) meat products etc but veganism does extend beyond what you eat.
I initially went plant based and as I've repeated a few times this was driven by a desire to get healthy. As I progressed I began to agree more about the ethics behind it all and so buying anything of that nature whether new or used would go against those ethics.
I'll admit that I still have 2 pairs of leather shoes and a belt (I've only been vegan for 18 months) and I would see it as waste to now dispose of these items before they're worn out.
BTW I'm not here to criticise your friend at least they're thinking is heading in the right direction.

I've spoken to a vegan who told me it's OK to feed cats (obligate carnivores) a highly processed vegan diet because "they aren't natural animals"
I know from a friend of mine on here that she was asked to refrain from wearing or consuming animal products for 24 hours prior to meeting a vegan chap.
I would clas both of those at the extreme end of veganism.
I have no issues with people's food choices. Only if they do not respect my choices, as I respect theirs. Just because I draw my line in the sand elsewhere shouldn't invite abuse. (Not that I have had that on here, but plenty on other platforms)

Well, I would be interested to know why Veganism is the chosen path ?
For me, it is an inappropriate WOE that does not provide all the nutrients that humans need.
I get it if it is for moral reasons, but for health it is not optimal, or even close to it.
But if youbare going to do it, make sure you add supplements and monitor yourself with regular trips to the doctor.

Just remember all the mice and invertebrates, ground nesting birds and other animals that may get caught up in the machines when they are cutting your grass up. You may think you are doing best by animals because your not eating the ones your seeing in the supermarket shelves, but when wheat/corn etc is cut, there are plenty being caught up in the machines. Enjoys your carrots |

Makes the short but grass fed lives of 3 sheep and a couple of cows (roughly my yearly consumption) seem morally superior in a way.

My calculation is based on what I eat. The more protein and fat, the less food in total. I eat about 2-3 lbs a day. Let's say 800lbs a year.
So my calculation was on the high side, just in case. Still, few lives compared to the many consumed and discarded by arable farming. |

Again, this is back to where people draw their line and their own definition. There is video clip from the BBC where a vegan activist met a sheep (wool) farmer and would/could not even touch wool. By one definition, oysters are classed as vegan. They have no brain or nervous system.
There are arguments both for and against veganism. Eating more veggies certainly has health benefits however much of the "faux" meat products are worse for you than actual meat. Also worse for the environment. If you are worried about cute animals, anything with palm oil in is likely displacing/ killing orangs in SE Asia.
Personally, I very rarely eat beef (worst environmentally) and choose local farm animals/dairy where possible.
I am glad to see there is far less vitriol on her than on other platforms about this topic. Might have something to do with respecting boundaries perhaps? |

Farming practices are not pretty full stop, regardless of what is being grown or harvested ... you seem to have forgotten the badgers, foxes and crows killed, amongst others in the raising of slaughter animals.. Along with the rabbits, deer etc killed to protect crops
I guess if you had a whole sheep /cow in your freezer and ate your way through it (as one of my friends does), your argument of 3 sheep +2 cows would work.. But if you are eating a bit of a sheep weekly.. I don't think they slice a bit off and then send it back to the field, saying "thanks for only eating a bit of ne.. I'm only a little bit dead"

The lack of fibre ?
Fibre, which like all carbohydrate, are the only non-essential macronutrient. There are essential amino acids, essential Fats, but no carbs that we need to consume for life.
I do buy prepacked and labelled beef and I eat the organs (heart,kidneys, liver etc.) I try to minimise the waste and it is farmed in a highly sustainable way.
Next you will be saying that I will have a heart attack or something equally mis-informed
