Love that term.

Just heard it again on Homes Under the Hammer.

Sounds like a good swear,as in "Frankly my dear, I dont give a flying freehold!"

Also covers alleyways between mid terraced houses - the front half of the first floor over the alley belongs to one side, the back half belongs to the other side.

Flying freeholds can arise where ancient properties were divided into a row of small houses and people simply had to go with the room configurations that they were lumbered with.

I just bought a house with multiple flying freeholds. It's like someone put four houses in a bucket and stirred vigorously then poured them out!
