How would Victorian people react to horror stories and movies today?

I was watching a TV movie earlier set in the 1800s where it showed a scene where people reacted in horror while watching a play of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and it made me wonder, how would the Victorian people react to the horror stories and movies we know today?

I can imagine they would be absolutely terrified especially if they saw something like The Exorcist for example.

Considering post mortem photography they enjoyed.. maybe they wouldn't find it so bad.

They'd be over 200 years old so you'd have to turn the volume up

The reality of life for many people in Victorian times far exceeded any horror movie we could show them

Exactly ! I worked for a while with refugees from awful situation and they hated horror or violent films as it was too close to home. For most of us it's a safe form of escapism.

They'd probably agree that the movie Cats is utter shite.
