London/Essex... ish... Romford to be exact

A war which could not be won nor was designed to be won. Earning corporations involved in the War business billions in the process no doubt. War is very lucrative.

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

As I said the last time this came up... I know just where I was.

In the middle of the opening day of the pub I was working in. We didn't have a telly in there at the time, so when someone came in and said what was happening the boss went and got his from upstairs. Switched in just in time to see the 2nd tower hit.

I fainted. Then spent the rest of the day waiting for a call that never came.

For someone somewhere it must have achieved something. But for too many all it achieved was heartbreak and loss.

"Can anyone explain what this awfull attack actually achieved? "

The Washington Post estimates that the cost of invading Afghanistan (as that's where the US were convinced Bin Laden was hiding out after 'masterminding the attacks') at US$2.3 trillion.

Thats US$2,300,000,000,000.00

Civilian casualties:

According to the Watson Institute 71,000

The Costs of War makes for sobering reading. Search Watson Brown education as it's a University. The total long term costs of the Afghanistan adventure is reckoned by Watson Brown to be closer to US$8 trillion when long term care of the wounded, corruption and everything else is taken into account.

Military casualties: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coalition_casualties_in_Afghanistan

When I first heard the news I thought they meant a small single seater had accidentally hit one of the towers not a full on passenger plane! Makes you wonder what the hell was going through the hijackers heads? Must have been completely brainwashed!!

I was walking dogs with a friend, his wife phoned him to say that there was a terrorist on America, he just laughed and said Bollocks before hanging up.

When we got back to his we both watched in silence the repeated footage......

Neither of us had expected to see anything like that in our lives.

I watched it sat on my sofa at home. I will never forget it. I’ve only recently been able to watch documentaries on it, Survivors accounts and their tales of people who selflessly helped them and others, from the emergency services to just other office workers.

But yeah I was on Operational Tour in Northern Ireland I’m pretty sure I was duty too, I remember us all sitting around wondering what the retaliation would be and pretty much guessing we the UK would be involved at some point.

Watched a programme on it last night, from the view point of different people filming around the city. Still gets you no matter how much time has passed. You just can’t, and don’t to, imagine the terror those people went through. Heartbreaking.

I was at my grandads and watched as the second plan hit. Never forget it

I remember it was the day I got my student card at college and then shortly after one of my mates told me about the planes hitting the trade centre.

Watched the program the other night and it still brings back the anger and hurt.

We wasted 20 years and thousands of people died and now the terrorists have more control than ever

The USA and probably half of the world accused Osama Bin Laden of being the mastermind of this attack and you have to ask why? His father was worth over €5 billion ! So why did he have this mindset??

I have told my story before…. I am sure a lot of the people who have been here for a while know…

I was in New York until 2 days before… and September 11 was my first day working in my new job at American Express

There was an announcement at 2pm asking if anyone who had New York relatives to go to a room… they told us a plane had crashed into WTC, and they would let us know more when they did…

15 minutes later they pulled us all aside, let us know a 2nd one had crashed, and anyone who wanted to go home could….. wired thing was most of us stayed but an office where you would here telephones ringing constantly went deafly silent

Then they told us all to go home… just go home! It was when we asked what had happened they told us of collapse 1….

I had friends who worked in both buildings… I had relatives who worked just a few blocks up!

And then for some reason I became almost the point person for everyone I knew to find out if everyone was safe….

The weird thing is that because the tv and radio antennas were at the top of WTC1 basically a lot of people in New York couldn’t get information, but me here could…. So it’s me with 2 phones trying to find out who was where, if people were okay ect

My relatives were okay… they left their buildings after the first one hit and basically ended up having to walk all the way up Manhattan and over the bridge into queens before they managed to get lifts

Not everyone I knew got out, I lost 6 damn good friends that day… 3 worked for cantor Fitzgerald, 3 worked for Morgan Stanley

So on Saturday, I’ll do what I always do on that day… go to my church in the morning and light 6 little candles….

I remember that day so clearly..

As per my username I grew up Stateside. Whilst no one I knew was in NYC on that day. I did have friends in the Pentagon and had been to the WTC a few times.

Ironically I actually got married on 9/11 (2004 though) it was the only date available (no wonder) unsurprisingly it was not a good omen for my marriage!

I was sat on the sofa watching telly feeding my 12 day old baby. My grandparents were on a flight to the US for a family wedding but diverted to Calgary. My ex in-laws were in the US & on an internal flight. It was one of the worst days ever just waiting….

We went to the 9/11 memorial last year & it was totally heartbreaking. I sobbed the whole way round.

According to the documentaries on the telly this week, the emegergy command centres were also in the towers too (can anyone confirm this first hand?) and that took out any hope off joined up coms. The police fire brigade and the ambulances couldn't share information on the fly.

Also that programme mentioned that the towers were supposed to have 6 stairwells, but only three were built, as the planning rules had changed recently and that meant more space to rent out.

This felt like a pair of upright Titanics. Thousands of people trapped with so little chance of escape. A perfect storm of bad politics, pure evil, bad disaster advice and total and utter chaos and politicians at all levels, never, ever learning from history.

If only America stopped destabilsing other stable countries, then maybe, just maybe all those people might have gone home on that day, alive.

RIP to those who died.

On that day I was attending a conference in Queen Elizabeth Hall opposite the Houses of Parliament. If they had attacked London then I wouldn’t be here today.

It was a hot day and I walked to Oxford Circus to buy my daughter a school bag from Top Shop. There was a huge crowd standing around the entrance to the Underground and I just thought it was a problem with the trains.

The paper sellers were shouting something I couldn’t make out and I jumped on a bus to Victoria Station to get the train home to Kent.

I bought an Evening Standard and rushed onto the train. I started reading the paper and quickly had to get a tissue out as I had tears running down my face.

I managed to hold back my emotions until I opened my front door and I collapsed in a mess holding my daughter. All I could think was that WW3 had started. I was mesmerised by the coverage on the tv and had a dreadful night without sleep mourning the loss of all those people.

Mankind hasn’t learnt anything from these horrendous acts and I do live in fear at what will happen next.

Obscene amounts of money are spent on war while a good percentage of people in the world lack enough food and water to have a decent life.

I had a letter from my social housing landlord, telling all residents to stay put if there was a fire in a neighbouring property.

Err, I'm just going to ignore that advice, as I don't feel comfortable waiting to die for no reason. If upstairs was to burn, then all of the foam and or water would flood my place too.

It's these decisions that kill people, evacuation exists for a reason. Who exactly chose that particular cladding?

As the fire brigade said once.

"Get out

Get us out

And stay out!"

Wise words indeed.

Other than what they did… what do you think they should have done?

I don’t think anyone had a problem with the initial reaction.. the problem was the duration

Anyway that’s all my political points for today…. Today is about honouring the 3000 people who died on this day 20 years ago

On 9/11, it would be nice if Americans also remembered the countless lives that their war on terror has affected. There are kids who were not even born in 2001 who are facing the consequences of this war.

I remember being on a trading floor in london watching the overhead news screens as events unfolded. Seemed so surreal as if it was a movie. Hard to fathom the scale of destruction and loss of life. Remarkable stories of heroism told thereafter.

Would like to think humanity would learn - but alas we seem destined to repeat the same loops.

RIP
