Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I have been saying to people that I feel heartened that the Union Flag has been reclaimed from the far right.
Those of a certain generation and politics feel that I am wrong and we should not forget how it has been used.
What do you think? |

By far right do you mean bnp type people?
I have thought for a while now that this country is too ashamed to fly its flag. We have had a great year this year and its people should be proud.
I hate to see any flag used by political parties. I know someone with a lot of English tattoos on him and he often gets asked if he is part of a political group when the fact it he just loves being English |

I do mean BNP type groups. Many of us had to fight these groups in the 80s and the Flag was their symbol. Tattoos of the Flag their branding.
I want to see us take that connotation away from them - own it for all of us and not a minority. |

I always thought the st George was the symbol of BNP/NF etc.
Maybe I'm just plain wrong though.
The Union flag would be a strange symbol to use if you're a separatist organisation because it implies er union does it not.
Anyway i digress, i prefer the st George being an Englishman but as far as i'm concerned being English is how you feel, not what colour your skin is. |

The Union Flag and each nations flag within these islands is a symbol of the people, for the people, by the people...
It is a symbol of who we are at home and around the world...
No pejorative minority can ever hijack it / them, whilst good people care...;-) |

Be proud of the Flag of St George - look at the history and it many ways it is quite fitting. |

Good words but sadly in the eyes of a fair number of British Citizens that is exactly what happened in the past. Good people cared but didn't really have the 'vehicle' to stand against the hijacking, the olympics has helped change that. |

The Jubilee too. I have seen young black, Asian and dual heritage boys just singing the National Anthem. They have heard it so often now and have seen the Flag with it almost every time. |
