Why do other men call you "mate"? When clearly you are not their mate.
Im not their mate.....n he's not my mate... So why do it?
For example....u are out n about somewhere n some guy calls you mate!! Never seen um b4 entire life! N call you mate! no nothing about um n vice versa! So why? Im not ya mate. |

Do you take every common term or phrase so literally? If an old lady in a shop says “Thank you love.” when you hand over the cash, do you think she means she loves you?

It’s just a polite colloquialism. A little bit tragic that you’re even asking this. Says a lot about the society we live in today
Are you the same guy that glassed my mate Eric in a bar in Majorca in 1997, for inadvertently dropping a “mate-bomb” and saying ‘calm down, mate’ to an irate d*unken football hooligan?
Australians do it all the time, and they’re right miserable bastards!

"I call everyone mate regardless if male or female friend or stranger. It’s just regional slang like duck, love, pet etc"
There s a guy at work who calls me mate, even in email. At first I thought it was odd, now I quite like it because it is quite unique via email. |

It's simpler than calling him fellow man. |

"Is "Boss" the new "mate" or is that just used for shop keepers or whatnot?
Just asking for a mate
Boss means "really good" in the general vicinity of this area.... "
Boss I detest... colloquial to prison life. I'm not your boss and I don't think your cool, nor do you have my respect for epitomising it as a way of life.
I personally tend to use 'chap' |

Here, boss isn't used like that. You might hear "aren't those new Nike trainers boss?" Or "last night was boss, wasn't it?"
It means something really good. Could mean a person but then it'd be used as an adjective, not a noun |

"I’m fine with mate, but ‘matey’ is patronising and annoying as fuck. "
Matey *Australian accent*
I never liked the word mate, I always sense an undertone of passive aggressiveness in people when they say that. Or so I’ve observed when two guys call each others mate but don’t know each other.

Just don't message the whole site. Most people have two lines or a bunch of angry advice to describe themselves, ignore them. Only message people who actually say something interesting in their profiles.
Narrows it RIGHT down and those people are more talkative.

"Because Sir went out of fashion 100 years ago?"
I will still refer to an older gentleman as Sir. Especially at work.
Its something the older gen can appreciate. I won't be calling an 70+ guy mate lol.
OP it's casual way to say, "I'm a friendly person". If I'm on a night out n get called Mate, chances are I'll have a laugh with that person cos they're nice people |

I refer to all men I meet through work when delivering as sir although I did one day and the guy told me off lol.
I can’t help being polite |

"I find it condescending when someone calls me mate. Similar to whatever to me it means fuck off or fuck you. Maybe it’s the Irish in me. We prefer to call people either a cunt or a muppet "
How have you concluded that? Why is it condescending? |

You might do well to become accustomed to the parlance of the locale in which you live. If you're not in Ireland and are in fact in Lancashire, you'll find dialect words used very differently. |

So much anger but why do people shorten words in their text that's triggering. |
