White knights

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I've seen in several threads people saying things like "I don't want to be seen as a white knight, but..."

So, I'm curious - why is it viewed as bad to be a white knight? Isn't it good to defend/support someone if you see them being picked on?

Perhaps I'm just not understanding! (Very possible!)

White knights are men that specifically stick up for women no matter what they’ve done in an attempt to get in their good books so they can potentially get sex

So yeah I’d say it’s a bad thing

Maybe they really mean they don't want to come across as a suck up

Chivalry can work real well, though it's down to the individual on whether it's seen as chivalry or misogyny

I believe that's how it is understood. The problem being how to tell the difference between men who comment to win favour and those who comment because they think a post is wrong or offensive. Not always easy in an online context.

Should probably clarify for some of the guys that missed a vital point

It’s not defending woman in the hope of getting something, that’s part of it.

It’s defending women blindly, whether they are in the wrong or not, that makes a white knight.

Perfect example is one we’ve all seen. In the lib and some girl throws her drink at a guy, starts hitting him, slapping him, calling him names. Everyone’s fine with that. He pushes her away and suddenly 3 guys jump on him with the “you can’t ever touch a lady” mentality

They’re white knights, because she was entirely in the wrong, but they jumped to her rescue anyways, and are probably hoping it’ll put them in her good books and she might take them home later that night.

No, it’s a lazy comment to try a disparage men who sometimes stick up for women. It’s a comment used to try and gain an advantage over other men.

I don't think white knighting is specifically a male thing.

A man and a woman can post almost identical scenarios in which they've been treated badly by the opposite sex. The woman will get largely supportive responses from all genders telling her it's the man's fault

The man will get largely unsupportive responses telling him it's his fault.

First time I have heard the term tbh, I thought you were talking chess to start with!. If someone hasn’t done anything wrong and is being victimised or mistreated, then we should all be helping out and sticking up for them. However, if someone has done something by wrong, then they should be shown the errors of the their ways, not stood up for.

No. White Knight most recently came to prominence during Gamergate (abuse campaigns carried out under the pretence of caring about journalism in video games). Anyone who disagreed with people hurling abuse, trolling etc. was called a white knight in order to derail opposition. i.e. accuse someone of having an ulterior motive rather than simply objecting to the abuse of someone else.

"White Knight" gets thrown around far too often.

Of course there are some men who will behave in that way, but some people cry "white knight!" whenever a man agrees with a woman, as if it's impossible for men to do that without having an ulterior motive.

is that a white knight or just being decent??

i have always used white knighting in a different way to this as described above gallantly defending the honor of a women who is usually attractive - doesnt happen so much to people they dont fancy haha and most usually against any man that might have a different opinion to them by belittling or slating the male opinion

I wonder how often a man has got a BJ out of posting a supportive comment on Forum ? I'd guess......never, and it's also pretty insulting to women to suggest that's all it takes to have sex with them.

I think white knighting is thrown around probably a bit too oft - let's be honest, we've all seen a man come to a woman's defence in the hope it gets him noticed/he's putting his willy in her but it's like the be kind mantra. Overused and not very accurate.

I think it can be good to support those who you see being picked on but also... sometimes it can become unpleasant. And the bias because you like that person/want to biblically know them clouds sensibilities.

The best example I've seen is when a man came to a womans defence in a forum argument.

The argument continued which by the way was with another woman and suddenly the same guy was defending the other woman.

As the thread continued he jumped back and forth between each woman until someone else realised that both women had very similar profile pics and asked him if he realised what he was doing?

He hadn't and admitted he was defending the woman with the great tits because she was hot but didn't realise there were two hot women with great tits arguing with each other.

It's supposedly a belittling phrase designed to ignore the point that someone is being a pillock in the first place and needed to be set straight.

Often used by those in the wrong with no rational counter point and unwilling/unable to change. Or wanting to provoke a response (Trolls).

Like most of these phrases used, boomers, gammons, snowflakes, lefty's etc. Just a throw away passive aggressive thing.

Of course there are some men who will behave in that way, but some people cry "white knight!" whenever a man agrees with a woman, as if it's impossible for men to do that without having an ulterior motive.

"

Now we are calling men names when they are acting kindly towards women. What has the world come to. It’s crazy.

Usually Dundee and around

Don't all terms have many meanings, and the problem is whether those using them have the same understanding of the meaning...

I do hope I am not judged by my user name, it was originally selected based on a song, chivalry and a love of chess.

There's acting kindly and then there's brown nosing to try and get your dick wet. I've been brought up with morals and I'm extremely respectful towards women. However, I've also got a great bullshit detector and I'm pretty blunt when it comes to calling people out. The forums are horrendous for cliques/arse licking etc and it's sad to see how much fakery goes on. The problem is so many people are scared to call it as they don't want to feel ostracised. Personally I don't care as I've got a decent bunch of friends away from Fab so I ain't here to win a popularity contest.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

"I've seen in several threads people saying things like "I don't want to be seen as a white knight, but..."

So, I'm curious - why is it viewed as bad to be a white knight? Isn't it good to defend/support someone if you see them being picked on?

Perhaps I'm just not understanding! (Very possible!)

"

I think the difference is when it’s clearly not genuine concern and just trying to get into someone’s pants.

I don’t know the term but they are often the same people where there’s a preference thread about females, they like everything

Q: What’s you’re favourite STI? A: All STI’s are beautiful etc

I've had a few people message me personally in the past saying they agree with something I've said but wouldn't dare say it themselves because they feel they may get shot down for it as it disagrees with some of the more popular/outspoken posters.

Tin town

I don't want to be a white Knight but.... If there's so much misunderstanding, misuse, abuse, miscommunication with it... Maybe use other words.?or as it is used as an insult... Perhaps not say anything at all if you have nothing nice to say?

What many folk here are describing a white knight as is a “sycophant”. That’s not what the definition of a white knight is.

Fair do's.... yeah I think you're right having re-read the definition of both. So what I said above is aimed at sycophants.

Obviously the term "White Knight" has been incorrectly re-purposed over the years.

fair enough. Shot down feels different to ostracised. But imo thide are in a similar place to white knights if the fear is that it may stop them from getting their dick wet. It's just more covert.
