What are you favourite myths and legends of the Ancient Greeks?

I love the Odyssey.

I loved the whole story. Just before lockdown, Stephen Fry read his version of it at a venue in Birmingham (and a few other places) and it as spell-binding.

Anybody else saw/ heard him recite?

Aphrodite in her nightie

Walking in the dark

Trod upon a puppy's tail

And made the creature bark

Aphrodite in her nightie

Let the creature go

By lifting up her instep

And raising her big toe

At the moment I'm thinking a lot about Aeschylus's take on the Eumenides (not necessarily a canonical take, perhaps even propaganda to an extent, but a myth which survives)

You will probably enjoy the Shield of Achilleus also by the same author.

Heartbreaking and beautiful

"What are you favourite myths and legends of the Ancient Greeks?

The Odyssey is an epic poem encompassing many stories, not a myth or legend.

I’ve always had a soft spot for that rogue Prometheus but I think the myth of Sisyphus is a great moral lesson.

I know the myth is usually portrayed as a lesson in futility but I always respected his determination to keep going again and again.

One day he’ll get that boulder over the other side; one day I’ll make page 17 of Hot Pics.

A specific part of the Odyssey for me... Calypso

Poor old Odysseus eh?... held captive for 7 years on an island by a horny nymph...

Also a haunting song by Suzanne Vega...

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

Jason and the Argonauts was the first story I ever actually remember my Dad reading to me as a child. I still have the book of myths and legends that he used.

"A married man too ..."

Who denied immortality and the pleasures of a goddess to get back home...

Of course, he would never have escaped had Zeus not sent Hermes in to demand it...

unusual for Zeus to be particularly interested in the sanctity of a mortal relationship though eh?... I wonder if there was an ulterior motive...

Zeus was probably getting back at the missus for something..... the timeless qualities of the Greek classics
