What singers do you like and what song would you recommend folk to listen to, to get a feel for said singer. I'm only picking two to begin or I'd be here all day
Axl Rose, give estranged by Guns n Roses a listen
Tarja Turunen, give Sleeping sun by Nightwish a listen.

Does the singer have to be from a band? Or any singer? |

Now funny enough... One of my first and fave albums at the time was carole King and tapestry.... Hadn't listened to it in decades and then it came on TV and reminded me what an amazing voice.... |

Peter Hammill. A unique voice in English music, there is literally nobody else like him.
Solo: Individual track - "A Better Time (acapella)" from the X My Heart album. Full album - "The Noise".
With his band, Van der Graaf Generator: Individual track - "La Rossa" from the Still Life album. Full album - "Pawn Hearts". |

Tommy Karevik who sings in a lesser known Symphonic Heavy Metal group Kamelot (a Swedish Evanescence). Song that sums them up would be Burns to Embrace.
I went to see them in Manchester a few years ago and they were mesmerising - it was like a theatrical concert.

Floor Jansen, also Nightwish, Ghost Love Score should do it.
Also, Charlotte Wessels (ex-Delain) Soft Revolution.
Elize Ryd (Amaranthe), pretty much anything, although Do or Die is pretty awesome.
Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) really nails Covered by Roses, a song I have to listen repeatedly. |

There's a singer called Desi Valentine who I think is a great vocalist. I'd recommend the following for anyone interested:
Asylum
Fate Don't Know You
My Worst Enemy
Higher Heart |

"Dermot Kennedy - A Closeness
Tom Grennan - Run in the rain
Dan Owen - Hand that you hold"
I really like Hideaway from Dan Owen but I need to give that a listen too.
"Oh Please" and "Found what you've been looking for" are my favourite by Tom Grennan too |

Females, well Suzanne Vega has a voice that is like a lover whisperin' in your ear on a sleepy Sunday summer lie in.
Letitia Sadier from Stereolab has a great voice in that French tradition, like Edith Piaff but not.
Liz Faser from The Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil and Massive Attack, folky and acrobatic.
Julianne Regan from All About Eve has a voice that is so suited to English folk. |

All cracking singers, Anette Olzon was good with Nightwish but not a patch on her predecessor |

It's a really odd one, but I love the voice of the female singer from Hen Ogledd.
They are a little weird and she isn't the best singer, but I love her tone and accent.

I always felt sorry for Anette, she coped too much flak for something that wasn't her fault and was over and done with by the time she joined Nightwish. Steve Harris rated her singing very highly. |

"There's loads of videos on YouTube of just the vocal tracks of various songs - the Queen ones are amazing.
I've listened to a few of the Zeppelin isolated tracks.
Plant's voice is chilling"
Agreed and so powerful. |

Not controversial for me, he has a fantastic voice. There's a YouTube clip of him doing war pigs and he really pulls it off. |

I know what you mean, she's a phenomenal singer but people were always going to compare her to Tarja. Dark passion play is one of my favourite Nightwish albums. |

"Aaron Lewis - Staind - Outside, solo album the road - Forever, or search for a cover of what hurts the most
I'm ashamed to say I've never listened to his solo stuff but love Staind "
He went from a rock singer to a country singer, not a fan of country music but his voice does suit the genre |

Sorry skim read (didn't read properly...)
Glenn Hughes - "Catch The Rainbow". It's off a tribute album to Ronnie Dio. Bluesy & soulful. It nesrly melts my heart...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDO8OmIcMIs
Liza Carthy - Beautifully done! "Blood On My Boots" from the album Neptune. Very tuneful & Melodic - but the subject matter a little weird? Great for Haloween. The band singing in a taunting way with their "na,na,na" and "nee-nar,neenar." Love it! "I was drinking champagne with Jerry Springer...."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRopUDkoEIc
Within Temptation (Sharon Den Ardel) - "Faster." Her vocals are very strong on this & it's an arse kicking track too! Pedal to the metal!

I'd say so, I love the gravelly tone to it |

Johnny Cash, either the rich baritone of his peak years or the broken croak of his dotage. Both are awesome but I prefer the latter; there is just a richer depth of emotion escaping from the cracks in that once mighty oak of a voice.
Try his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's If You Could Read my Mind for a stunning example of the latter.
