"It's impossible to compare across generations, the game changes so much
"
I often say this but with a caveat. Take a look at someone like Best on YouTube, he's breathtaking.
Now remember he played in an era where with heavier footballs, rough pitches, defenders set out to injure him and he was a functioning alcoholic for some of his career.
Now place him in today's game with lighter footballs, better pitches, protection from referees. Had he joined Manchester United during Fergie's tenure he would have been shielded from the limelight and his partying possibly curbed.
Ronaldo and Messi wouldn't be getting near a Balon D'or. |

Ronaldo without doubt , highest international goal scorer off all time , within touching distance of being the all time highest goal scorer , played in 3 top leagues, no one else is anywhere near him |

His star only shone bright for a few years but Kaka mesmerized me growing up. The guy glided across the pitch so effortlessly and had insane acceleration.
If only injuries hadn't gotten to him |

"The original Ronaldo was epic. Similar ish story to Best in some ways. "
He was the best player I ever watched live. Before those knee injuries he was something else.
Even after the injuries he was great but my god what a player.
He also provided the best redemption story in world football |

I think that question should be aimed at a few Miss Worlds!
In today’s game Best would be untouchable. |

If George was good enough for the only other football God Pele he's good enough for me.
Ronaldo, Messi, Maradona all played when the game decided to be kiss chase except you fall over instead of being kissed. |

Yes because he'd have all the modern coaching, nutritional science and sports science available to today's players. |

Agreed but his drinking and partying came because he was the first superstar footballer being chased by fans and the drinking was born of homesickness.
Modern players are better equipped to deal with the adulation he was not. There's a reason he was called el beatle |

I guess in a way though, his drinking mirrored the culture of the time and of the game. Maybe he wouldn't have had drinking issues with how strict clubs are on being fit. |

True, but there are plenty of Ravel Morrison's etc nowadays who for one reason or another don't make the most of their talent. I think it's tougher nowadays to make it to the top, talent alone isn't enough |

Yes it did but not all succumbed to it or whether he would have attained the fitness levels required today. It is something we will never know.
So many great players that were great in their time but would not necessarily be so in another generation of the sport. |

Best was a sublime player but outside of UK and Ireland he's rarely mentioned as one of the absolute greats, not least because he effectively retired at 27. Players such as Garrincha or Zico or Di Stefano were at least Best's equal in talent but hardly mentioned in the UK.
The holy trinity is Maradonna, Messi and Pele, imho. |

Thanks
I'd strongly recommend the film Maradonna which focusses on his peak years at Napoli. All the world's best players were in Italy then, the defenders were brilliant but brutal and Diego was still head and shoulders above the rest. |

"Or even George Best...
For me .. Cristiano Ronaldo
two late goals again tonight..
the best in the world ever"
It's a different game to what it was when Pele, Best, Played football.
For me the best player there has ever been is Pele the skill, speed and awareness he had at that time in football was unbelievable.
But this is the thing about this question people will disagree with me.
In today's football for me it's Messi but I'm a Liverpool fan so that says it all |

Maradona was a genius player. He's the only player credited with such a big hand in winning a country a world cup. He took a highly unfancied Napoli to the scudetto.
What boggles my mind is that he basically partied from Monday to Thursday, trained hard on Friday and Saturday, played a match on Sunday and repeated.
Paolo Maldini said the two toughest opponents he faced were Maradona and Ronaldo (the Brazilian) |

Yeah his peak was short lived. But for 2-3 years at Barca he was unstoppable, and the most gifted controller of the ball I've ever seen, Messi being second. His entertainment value was beyond all others too, even to this day xx |
