As I look around our planet I'm amazed by the intricacy of things not to mention the rest of the universe. It makes it hard to believe it's all a fluke.

I find it hard to get onboard with a creator that would give all living things a reproductive drive but single out humans as the one species not allowed to do it until marriage.

I look at the atrocities going on in the world and if God does exist, in the words of Al Pacino in devil's advocate "he's an absentee landlord"

Even that is either rather immature, disrespectful and dismissive or or three.

I am not asking you to believe in anything, I am merely saying that "live and let live" is really not all that hard. In short, a bit of tolerance is all that is required.

If somebody tries to force their religion onto me, I do not like it and I will say so.

But it really does not harm anybody if somebody goes about their business and holds a belief.

Cannot remember who said this.. I think it was a French philosopher :

Whilst I dont want to turn what should have been a fun joke thread all serious, peoples beliefs and adherence to religious teachings and ideologies can and do harm others on occasions. Indirectly perhaps but they can.

Take for example, the dignity in dying movement, which ultimetly is all about an individuals right to assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Back in 2008, Ex Prime Minister Gordon Brown wouldnt even entertain a open discussion on it ultimetly because because of his Catholic upbringing and beliefs.

Alternatively we can talk about how religion has oppressed minoritys, suppressed open laws or individual expression around the world.

Ultimetly, we live in a very secular country where people are turning away every day. It's very easy to say someone elses belief does not harm others and I agree, in principle it does not. We dont live in a society anymore where, for example, someone can be carted off just because they are gay and it offends "Christian sensibilities" but we do still live in a society where public opinion and voting matters. It's also fair to say those

Opinions can be manipulated by religious teachings.

But it's never that simple. It's like this whole anti vax mentality going on.

In principle i agree its the individuals right to choose whether to be vaccinated or not.

No harm to me right?

But the reality is, that person could be a risk to others indirectly because of their own beliefs. They become a higher risk factor which can have a knock on effect which may or may not end up effecting me because on the one day I get hit by a bus, the ambulance is out picking them up and not being free to pick me up off the floor leaving me.to.die a horrible death.

Or they could be right and my brain melts in 6 months due to.the chip the government put in it with the vaccine.

Point is, yeah, belief on it's own can be harmless and a pure thing that helps an individual but at the same time it can also influence things you wouldnt normally think about that do harm others.

Anyway...I'll get my coat as I've aucked all the fun out of the room.and I hope no one feels I'm having ago.because I'm not.

There are no gods, the very concept of diety is absurd, they are nothing more than early man first..... & worst attempt to explain that which they didn't understand, we have no need of gods now, I can understand primitive cave dwellers running around in bear skins wearing a bone through their nose while shaking a spear at the moon believing in gods, but modern man, no.

Can you not see that that might be really offensive? How does it harm you when somebody has a belief, which helps them, you do not share?

"

Your example involving Gordon Brown is wrong and way over the top. Assisted suicide is a crime believe it or not and against the law no matter how anyone thinks of it. And quite rightly so any person in Power would object to it in any way. Nothing to do with their religious upbringing. You are planting that thought there to rubbish the Catholic faith. My opinion. On the subject does not matter but until things change the law in this country is the law.

You're exactly the problem I'm talking about and everything wrong I made an example of. Small minded, short sighted and selfish to say the least.

You're right and everyone else is wrong. Religion in a nutshell. Believe whatever you want but it's when you pull out this whole "you're wrong and the law" argument I already know you don't have an argument. Laws change....does your world view?

If you dont like your worldviews being questioned....maybe you should have something to back your arguments up? Have some proof other than conjecture and personal belief. Then we can talk. If there is a god...any one of the few thousand that exist according to modern religions, I'd love to say hi just so I could know which religion is right.

But you're a smart guy and knew that right? You didnt honestly get triggered because your spesific religion was questioned did you?

feel free to prove my atheism wrong. I welcome being questioned. You however..kinda feel you dont.

I can understand people feeling animosity against other religions if they have had bad experiences or been victimised because of their own background/religion.

Live and let live is a fine motto, but harder to adopt if you have suffered consequences because if your own religion or beliefs.

If people from a other religion wish harm to me because of my background, the it is hard not to feel some sort of animosity towards that group. And if I suffer financially and careerwise for the same reasons, a pattern develops.

It's interesting is it not that when faith is mentioned some people, perhaps weak minded, perhaps not, become belligerent, aggressive and sweary. Their argument descending to insulting and belittling. We are better than that aren't we?

Even that is either rather immature, disrespectful and dismissive or or three.

I am not asking you to believe in anything, I am merely saying that "live and let live" is really not all that hard. In short, a bit of tolerance is all that is required.

If somebody tries to force their religion onto me, I do not like it and I will say so.

But it really does not harm anybody if somebody goes about their business and holds a belief. "

Live and let live is a lovely idea.

In practice, I have been set-upon by a group of guys because they assumed that I was a different religion to them. My dad’s house was smashed to pieces when he was a kid for a similar assumption. And my father in law was victimised in his profession and had to emigrate to be given fair career opportunities because of his religion. Ugly things happen in the name of religion, violence, bigotry, discrimination, snd tensions from these experiences last.

In the early days of Christianity they didn’t have print.

The image of the Christian God was largely borrowed from the former mighty Jupiter (or Zeus to the Ancient Greeks). After all the Roman population only ever saw statues and such like to form their impression of the supernatural. Angels were already believed in with wings and Christ’s image was eventually formed out of Apollo, which was based on Alexander the Great. An image of male perfection.
