WTF...!!! Where did the pound go... :-)

Three boys go up to a farm to buy an old bike off the farmer (not his wife...lol). He'd advertised it in the Post Office at thirty pounds. Each boy hands over ten pounds, and they slowly wheel the old bike away down the farm lane. The farmer watches them go, and thinks he's been a bit greedy, so he sends his farmhand after the boys and tells him to give them five pounds back. The sneaky farmhand gives each boy a pound back and pockets two pounds for himself.
The boys have now paid nine pounds each for the bike, and the farmhand has two pounds in his pocket. 3x9=27, +2 = 29 pounds. SO WHERE DID THE EXTRA POUND GO...???
And i'm waiting for someone to ask what a Post Office is...lol...!!! Rich |

"It frustrates me SO much that I've never been able to understand this! I wish I was clever "
The boys paid £10 each and got £1 each back, so they spent a total of £27.
The farmer had £30 but gave £5 back.
The farmer is left with £25. The farmhand keeps the £2 left over.
The question is worded to be misleading, but that's what it boils down to. |

You do realise that I'm probably going to have to write that down to stop me getting annoyed with myself in the future? You wouldn't believe how good I was at maths etc only 10 years ago!
Thank you kindly |

The question misleads by adding the £2 to the £27 the boys paid, whereas actually, it's part of the £27. |

Don't think of how much the boys have paid but how much the farmer and the farm hand have taken...
30-5=25
25+2=27 (farmer has 25 and the farm hand has 2 = 27)
The boys have the other 3
27+3=30 |
