Missing the UK!

Hello all,

I don't usually post on the forums, but it's a Friday, and I just wanted to say hello. I normally spend my time split between the UK and Australia, but since the pandemic erupted I've been stuck back in Oz. That's not such a bad thing, but I really miss the UK, especially now things are opening up again. Really missing friends a world away, especially the ones I haven't heard from recently. Looking forward so much to being able to get back, and hopefully catching up with old friends and new. Anyway, cheers for the weekend ahead. Make the most if it!

Hello and welcome back - I feel for you being stuck and that sense of not in control of your travelling. Hopefully not too much longer.

There was I thinking it was me, which it was I guess. But now you are saying you don't know either... I am relieved.

My nan’s spare room.

Blue is used as a common name such as mate, the gag is in that the question answers itself.

I heard an Australian comic ask it once.

He followed up with

What’s your favourite hobby, Sport.

Hello Blue, (a matey think to call someone in Aus) what’s your favourite colour?

Or as a pun, “What’s your favourite colour, blue?”

It may or may not be blue. Mine’s red.

Ha! Blue or bluey is longstanding Oz slang for redheads, although not sure of the origin. A lot of Australian slang is based on calling things what they aren't, so naybe that's it...

Maybe blue refers to that, and the fiery nature of some redheads!

The ironic use of blue is very much in keeping with Australian slang, the fight reference alongside fiery possible.

The Aussie slang for redhead I can think of is ranga, but it's pretty derogatory.

Thank you! As I say, can't complain too much about having been in Oz for the past year and a half. It's one of the better places to be 'stuck', but I'm originally from the UK and I miss the places and people. A bit spoilt from getting the best of both worlds before, and I certainly won't take travel for granted in future.

Ha - yes, I definitely don't miss the flights, or the hassle of passing through airports!

Yes, that one definitely is. Blue/Bluey is more standard/almost affectionate.
