Anyone else find it a bit cringe when strangers call you babe/baby girl/baby/sexy bum etc?
Maybe it’s just me.
What about when someone 20 years younger calls you baby girl?
Am I just grumpy and old or is it a bit cringe? |

No, you are not the only one - completely agree that they are cringe
-worthy. Pet names are probably the surest way to make me treat a message liek spam.
There is something about overfamiliarity from strangers that produces a severe allergic reaction
In person it is not much better but I do give them back the same treatment right away. Hard to believe though how many people look back at me in an odd way when I respond with "pumpkin" or "honey buns", as if I am the one who said the wrong thing. It is hilarious |

"I really hate it, plus also trouble, cheeky, princess, kitten.
Only one person is allowed to call me pet names, if anyone else does it, urgh."
I hate “hey trouble” it literally makes me heave.
It’s just gross and cringey. |

"I hate it but I do do it myself. I tend to call people lovely especially if I've spoken to them a while. But I don't in a non sexual manner, god I am a bit cringe "
I think it’s how it’s done isn’t it? In a “chat up line” way, it’s really cringe.
If the old lady on the till in Asda calls me honey, no problem |

"I always give pet names …
To anything, everyone, pets haha
I don’t know I just like rename and I think it’s also affectionate xx
"
In an affectionate way between friends etc doesn’t bother me but in opening messages as a chat up line, I just find it icky |

Oh yeah I agree, I have to have some degree of comfort I guess. If it’s strangers … then no.
Like I think..
“Who are you??!!” |

Exactly! Like a message - “hey trouble, how are you sexy? You’re gorgeous you baby girl” (I made this up as an example) eeeeeeeee
Baby girl? I’m 42 and old enough to be your mother!!! |

"Do they intend to make me cringe with those names? I doubt it - therefore I do not cringe! Yw "
So you only cringe at things intended to make you cringe? Strange but each to their own |

Yeah, no point reading cringe into something someone intended to be pleasant or stressing about it. Much easier to either tell them it's not something you like or just ignore and move on |

I think if it's a colloquium such as duck or bab or hen I'm not bothered.
If it's in a message from a guy on a dating site etc and it's every fucking message it's a bit weird...
Hi babe
You OK babe?
What you up to babe?
That's nice babe.
Show us your tits babe! |

Unfortunately my toes curling is not a response I can control. If something makes me cringe, that’s that.
I’m clearly not alone. Thanks for the input though |

That’s definitely weird and off putting! It’s all about the context. A lot of people round here will say “thanks love” at shops etc, it has no negative effect on me. It’s mostly when guys message me with overly familiar terms and I’ve never spoken to them |

Big cringe. First names will suffice. |

"I'm now second guessing my hellos...
I use folks for couples... And often use rockstar because I find hellos with names odd looking... Hmmm"
I have a solution for this conundrum - addressing people as "Dear Name-on-profile". Novel concept I know! Just like in letters aka correspondence. Which is exactly what online messages are - digital format does not change that fact |

Crazy concept but it might just work

I tend to use nicknames and the like irl too. My language recall skills aren't great (not just names, but words in general) and that's always been my way of avoiding awkward situations. |
