It's certainly troubling and atrocious for many of the citizens - it's very sad. I'm unsure it could have had a good ending, by just having a very rapid withdrawal.

To know was it worth it first ask why you were there. What did you want out of it?

The answer is no reason and wanted nothing. But America wanted to hit something so UK went with them. France at the time said it was stupid and everyone started calling french fries, freedom fries.

So no it wasn't worth it in my opinion and the end game was obvious to me.

I mean if you go there to "free" the people then obviously you have to attack Pakistan, the country that hides the fleeing Taliban allowing them to come back later.

While I don’t think we should have got involved twenty years ago. I don’t think it was for nothing.

Unfortunately the lives of those on the ground are determined by political and power decisions many thousands of miles away.

It is /was not a question of attacking Pakistan....what people seem to forget is the we (the West) created these monsters. The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan during then Cold War resulted in the USA, Saudi Arabia throwing billions of dollars at the Muhjahideen(various warlords forming an unofficial group)...noone bated an eye lid.

When the Russians withdrew in the late 80s, so the USA financial aid...effectively leaving the Mujahideen to fight it out which other for control. The Taliban is an offshoot of the Mujahideen.

You want to attack/blame someone, then start with the US then work your way to Afghanistans neighbour's..

Having worked in Kabul, my primary concern is that many friends and former colleagues now face a terrifying future. We made promises, we didn’t keep them, and good men and women from all sides have been lost.

We leave Afghanistan now worse than when we started, because we did not deal with the cronyism and corruption of the governance structures we put in place, leading to dissatisfaction. We have left enough military hardware behind, more than the Taliban previously had, to ensure that this state of affairs will continue for a generation and will become a force in Central Asia that could impact Tadjikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan. We have left the “tools” behind to destabilise an entire region and shattered any future confidence that oppressed people might have in our future interventions.

Mark my words if Central Asia starts to collapse because of the genie we let out of the bottle, that will be on the back of the politicians that decided it’s fate.

As I understand it we trained and equiped their soldiers but did not give them honest, competent or honourable leaders. So as soon as the Taliban appeared the trained and equiped soldiers dissappeared and put on civilian clothes to blend in.

As for the future? It does not look good. The Taliban already say they believe they should run the whole world - time will tell.

When I consider Afghanistan and other countries America has become involved with I think of the Ledeen doctrine tongue in cheek as it may be....

Every ten years or so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business.

I honestly don't think the coalition forces should have got involved in Afghanistan. They were never going to solve the issues the country had and now they've pulled out the situation has been exacerbated.

And for those that think that Afghanistan is Afghanistan’s problem. Think again. If you ostracise the Taliban from the international table, restrict aid and sanction them, they will do as they did, provide safe haven to groups that will pay for the “security” of a pariah state. Only this time they have an airforce, and tanks, and artillery. All of which can and will be repurposed, mines, guns, SAMs, equipment born of billions of dollars worth of military aid by the US, UK and Russia.

And if you think they won’t be able to fly those planes and helicopters, utilise the tanks and advanced weaponry, think again. Iran will train them, mercenaries will train them.

This “withdrawal”is an absolute disaster for the people of Afghanistan, for the people of the region and the world. Note we didn’t “leave” Germany until 1991, that’s how long it took the international community to judge the country stable enough to do so, just shy of 50 years.

Military contractors, weapons manufacturers, construction companies, raw materials producers and a thousand other companies have been “invested” in Afghanistan and although they do their best to avoid it, they pay taxes, their employees pay taxes. The only true cost of war is in lives lost. Money has been made. Oh the politicians will spin it, but Afghanistan had become “unprofitable” after 20 years of “milking”.

No idea what it cost the UK tax payers, but all the tax I’ll ever pay in my lifetime went towards a Tornado used in the first gulf war, which was lost in combat, 31 years ago (to give context to your tax and government spending). The US is reported to have spent 1.5 trillion dollars on the Afghan adventure.

There is always money for governments to take lives, but it’s less readily available to save lives.

China had border scuffles with India last year, several were killed on both sides when they engaged in hand to hand combat in the mountains. China is also very much cosying up with the Taliban at the moment as they'll have their eyes on strip mining afghanistan for its resources much like they have been in Africa in recent years, it's been in the news this week. The taliban will be generously rewarded financially as long as they leave China to mine what it wants.

The women and children would be the last thing to go

Males first

Male children

Live stock if they could

Then women

You could buy women for a sack of corn and a cow

Out in afgan women are objects property they have no real value

I agree with you - we have no right to nuke anybody. And while I share the frustration felt by people (I really do more than I can express on here!) I have no solution. It all sounds easy from an armchair position but I believe it is rather different in reality and on the ground.

People who tried to get away by clinging on to an aircraft - as I said earlier , is no different from people getting into a vessel not seaworthy and risking life and limb.

The difference? You have a better chance of survival in the dinghy.

The only thing that matters here is that we have betrayed the people of Afghanistan. We gave therm hope of a better life and then we took it away. The people there will suffer now, many with their lives and we could've at least allowed them to leave in a safe and orderly manner.

But no, we deny the best and brightest Afghanistan has to offer visas to study on a programme they have already qualified for because we don't want to give the impression Britain will welcome refugees.

We are an absolute disgrace, we have created a humanitarian disaster and will then moan about people fleeing for their lives wanting to come to a country that has promised to help them.

We can spend £110 million on a Typhoon fighter jet but living up to oour humanitarianb responsibilities is too expensive.

I am bemused by people wanting to bomb Afghanistan with nuclear weapons.

It will destroy everyone within its range. Taliban, anti Taliban, innocent children, aid workers, people in hospitals, crops, livestock, infrastructure.

It will poison a huge swath of our planet, perhaps way beyond the borders of Afghanistan.

Those that survive will probably have a desperate hatred of the nuclear bombers and will stop at nothing to get revenge in what is left of their poisoned lives. They won’t care if you personally supported the nuke, you are now their object of revenge anyway.

What would be the long term strategic aim of doing so? And if you are prepared to support such a vile action, why don’t you go and fight the Taliban yourself?

Just so you are aware, we didn’t go there just to help Afghans. We went there as it suited our strategic aim as a nation. The fact that we were helping lots of Afghan people was a lucky spin off for them. The UK sent people because it suited the UK to do so.

"It is /was not a question of attacking Pakistan....what people seem to forget is the we (the West) created these monsters.

We have all seen the old james bond and rambo films, we all know the Taliban were originally funded by the CIA, we even know that while they were funded by the CIA they were selling heroin into europe. Remember bond even hid in a heron shipment, but they were good lads.

The simple fact is, that was a long long time ago. Russia lost because they couldnt clear the caves. They have since come up with thermobaric bombs that USA used to clear out the caves. Russia have the most powerful ones in the world, some are as powerful as nuclear bombs and they can freely and openly drop them on the afghan mountains tomorrow if they want.

USA was not there to defeat the taliban. They had a list of names they had to kill. To get some of them they would have to go into afghanistan, hit the mountains, clear them out, and kill the names. They used russian bomb technology to do this very easily. They then ran missions across to pakistan to clear up the last few names and it was mission over for them.

The simple fact is as I said, if you want to beat the taliban today, then it does not matter who set them up or started them or what they were doing 60 years ago. Their tactic today is to run into Pakistan and be hidden by pakistan.

You have two options to combat this. 1 go into pakistan and cut their throats on pakistan soil. We know USA can do this. But there is a tactically better and more profitable solution that was developed by an Irish guy for the hasburg family to keep the ottomans/turks out of Europe.

What he did was he went to belgrade, he built the largest stockpile of gunpowder on the planet, brought in the biggest cannons, and drew a line in the sand. Anything crosses this line, start shooting the cannons and dont stop, before you run out of gunpowder the army will arrive behind you with more gunpowder and soldiers.

The modern day solution would be "If something crosses the border from pakistan, flatten it. By the time dust settles US/UK controlled drone will be over the site, and our controlled missile base will be locking on"

Then you train them to call in drone backup, and you charge them a few hundred million a year for it, and remove all boots.

Its not like the taliban were given secret cia mind tricks and can survive anything, its simply that the US army was not interested in ending them, just crossing certain names off a list, and we know this cause they openly let the ones they didnt have a list cross into pakistan, and even did deals with others not on their list.

Did the USA pick up the tab?

Oh Tom you aren’t that naive are you? Really. Where there is war there is profit. Else there is no need for war. "

True, but probably a tad persuaded by the influence they can cast also. They wouldn’t do nothing if they didn’t get something out of it… the America’s is a large island, they wouldn’t have to worry about Nazis invading.

They are naturally a war hungry nation, that goes for the people as well. Just take a look at the gun possession of its inhabitants… they all want to be Rambo.

I can't deny America's involvement in world war 2 helped turn the tide but until Pearl harbour they had an isolationist policy. They were happy enough to ignore the war in Europe except where selling and lend leasing arms to the allies was turning a profit.

After world war 2 their foreign policy changed in the face of the red menace. They just couldn't let Russia become the dominant world power.

They fought many a proxy war against communism and helped oust many a government that was socialist or communist leaning. They also supported dictatorships as long as they were pro America.

I think it was just a crude attempt /comparison to indicate that UK women have rights vs afgan women, who especially under the new rule, will have zero rights... Rather than UK women don't understand but UK men do. Does it make sense?

It's simple, if you don't like the Taliban you'll have to join the Taliban. Change comes from within.

"What happened to having a sit round the table with all parties involved and come to an agreement like adults?

If that can't be done or a solution agreed on, put a nuke in the middle of the country, primed and say if ya'll don't fucking behave it's game over.

Didn't go down well did it.. You idiot.

Hi comment reminded me of a line said by Peacemaker in the movie 'The Suicide Squad'. "All I want out of life is world peace, and I don't care how many men, women and children I have to slaughter to get it"."

The Taliban only respond/back off, to a fighting force, as one military expert said and the Afghan people say.

If a nuke puts them in their place and it may take one, may be the only solution.

The right place

If you invested $1,000 divided equally among Americans top five defence contractors in 2001 it would now be worth approx $10,000.

War is good business, and a great way for tax payers money to end up in the hands of rich shareholders. They seem to be the only winners in this situation and they lobby governments to ensure that they continue to make money (tax payer money) with vast returns on investment.

The Taliban are driven by their religious ideology. That 1440 year old creed may not seem relevant to us in the West today but it is of prime importance to the Taliban.

I am sure they will, as before, do whatever they want in their own country. If it gets too bad for us in the West to stomach we will probably have to go back and invade for another 20 years of fighting. Afghanistan has been almost continuously at war in one way or another for 100 years; it's not going to change over night.

I bet the next invaders will be China with economic bribes.

It sounds like a wonderful idea but tbh I cannot see it happen. It is not in their conceptual world of what Afghanistan should look like, how women should be and be treated.

I really fear they may have mastered the art of deception.

Having served there and worked there it angers me for people to say shit like we should just nuke em… most of those fighters that killed ours and other nations friends and brothers/sisters were from other nations that went there to fight us. Should we nuke all the Middle East then?

The average Afghan National just wants to grow his crops… sell them at the market and provide for there family. And they’re as scared of the new Taliban as much as the old one…

If you sit down and actually communicate with any average Afghan you’ll find that they aren’t scum. They’re trying to make the best life possible for them.

After 20 years of us trying to make a democracy I’m hoping that the young girls that have become educated and doing jobs like doctors, nurses and teaching will

Show the next generation what can be achieved if they push for change. Do I think the new Taliban will allow it… maybe in time… but not until they’ve imposed their power.

While I hear and acknowledge that the system in Afghanistan is very immoral and oppressive, the solution surely cannot be to kill so many innocent people. It is immoral, inhumane and would also just cause a new culture of terrorism.

I was specifically talking about Germany in WW2 - sure they did in Japan and it was awful.

I do not believe you can make this about numbers - a few million versus a few billion, it is just inhumane and immoral.

Also, seriously now, would you be out there in the battle? I think these theories of "nuking them" sound like an armchair solution. If you speak to real soldiers (and I have done as I have worked with them) there is a very different picture altogether.

Do you mean Donald Trump, the actual guy who decided up withdraw the US troops? The Trump who hates refugees? Or do you mean a different Trump?

Well, yeah. He's commander in chief now, but Trump was always banging on about "bringing US troops home" and "ending costly and ineffective wars overseas".

Surely these decisions weren't made recently?

Trump publicly announced the withdrawal and it's date so Biden wouldn't be able to keep troops there. Whether Biden agrees with the withdrawal or not is a moot point, don't try and say it was his idea and Trump wouldn'ty have done it.

Exactly - sometimes wonder whether people have forgotten all the stuff he is responsible for.

Yes, have to agree. In the end they are just figureheads.

Obama announced the start of the drawdown in 2011. They all would have done it. How it has actually happened has left a power vaccuum that was only ever going to be exploited by the Taliban.

So a bit of background - Trump as President asked Pakistan to release from prison the guy who is now head of the Taliban so the US could talk to him in Quatar.

The US representatives did a deal which involved NONE of the other parties in Afgahistan, (like the government, NATO uk etc) whereby the Taliban agreed it would not attack the weakened US forces on the promise that the US would leave by the end of the year.

Trump ran down troop numbers from 15,000 to 2,500; a contingent that could easily be annihilated by the Taliban in days if it chose. Trump had no plan at all for the transition other than to get the remaining soldiers out. It appears he had not even considered the US and other citizens in Afghanistan.

So Biden was faced with a fait acomplis and is basically Trump's patsy taking the hits for a disasterous decision. He has had to rush 5000 soldiers back in to defend Kabul airport.

But let us not believe the truth or consider history. Trump good - Biden bad! Wrap the star spangled banner round yourself put on your MAGA hat and yell "4 more years. 4 more years"

Newry Down

Historically, geographically, topographically, culturally and politically time has proven that Afghanistan, as an entity, is unconquerable.
