Something said on another thread the other day got me wondering ...
Munches. Never been to one. Contemplating going at some point. The comment I read on the thread was that they can be a bit cliquey. I've also heard that folks there can be a bit judgemental.
What have you heard about them?
For those folks who have been, what are your experiences? Are they inclusive, cliquey, judgemental, or something else? |

Went to some off 'another site' a few years ago now, like everything though, things can be clicked, as can socials etc, as you have friends and groups going to them, like everything though it's what you make it. |

Similar. Got a massive crisp sarnie craving now! Minds temporarily out of the gutter and in the kitchen. |

No different from a swingers club (I’ve never been to a swingers social meet) just a bunch of people who aren’t afraid to experiment with their kinky side.
Certainly they’ll be people who know each other at these events, but they’re generally friendly enough if you get talking to a few.
The main difference is they can be very vanilla, as they’re often held in pubs or other social places so people don’t turn up in fetish gear.
Only been to four munches and all of them in Manchester prior to going to Club Lash later that day. So it was nice to meet people prior to dressing up. |

It depends on the munch, the munch host, the venue etc.
Some can be cliquey, however you have to appreciate that the regulars will have seen many first and only timers, so they can be more reserved until they see you at more events/munches.
We were at one last night, 6 regulars and 7 new people so it was a good balance. |

Is it a matter of needing to trust "outsiders"? |

"Surely you get out of it what you put in??
Go with an open mind, be polite, introduce yourself, be respectful..
Don't be needy or creepy "
Great advice and what I used to say to newbies who wanted to come to the munch I used to help host |

Glad you enjoyed. Small munches can be a good start for people who are newer |

Munches in general are super inclusive but can be cliquey.
Because of the increased need of privacy and discretion in the BDSM scene, it can be harder to make friends, but it is possible!
You have to just persevere a little bit and be aware that some of the normal topics like 'what do you do for a living' etc are less likely to be answered (more from slightly older members. The youth of today seem less aware of some of the very real implications of being public in the scene).
Judgementalness (is there such a word) doesn't generally occur but can happen at some of the more niche munches (a Ds specific munch for example)
I've got a soft spot for them. I ran a couple for years. Went to my first one since lockdown the other week. For me it was too busy (about 130 people in a tiny room), was too squished to move round or talk. |

Thank you, that's really helpful to know. In what way can D/s specific munches be judgemental? |

Can’t remember it’s name but it has a car park above it
Very studenty and a bit nerdy, only around 40-50 attendees but friendly enough for a munch. Admittedly this was quite a few years ago, not been to Lash for quite some time. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

I used that as an example of a type of munch but let's stick with that example...
People at a Ds munch may not want to talk about other topics (although lots of talk at munches is about none kink topics) but you might find that they may also be judgy about people who are purely into SM or just spanking. Or furries. Furries get a bad rep in a lot of them. Which is a shame cause they are so pet-able |

It can also depend on the type of munch.
A play munch held at a club or venue where play and fetish wear is allowed is going to have different topics of conversation than a plain munch held in the middle of a weatherspoons.
Best advice really is if you want to go, reach out to the organiser and let them know you want to attend, you are new etc. and they will keep an eye out for you (some munches have new people arrive earlier).
There are one of the best ways to get to know active people on the scene in your local area. |

I went to my local munch pre covid and I would agree that the term "organised social" would be a good description. It was in a local weatherspoons.
I didn't know anyone and had no preconceptions or expectations.
I would say it depends on the organiser, the people who attend and what you want to get out of the evening.
It's worth a gander if it's something that interests you.
Good luck x |
