Lots of comment on independent schools getting higher grades than State schools. Some think these schools should be banned. Surely it's the State Schools mission to match them..

How can they match them when the funding just isn't there.

When a doctor or a lawyer takes their kid out of a state school and pays for their education you lose a potentially high grade right there.

Not because that child is smarter, but statistically they are more likely to get help and support at home, and given more chance to succeed.

Also you lose those parents from the state school system, those parent are more likely to have the education and communication skills to push for improvements to the school.

Now the poor state school is left with less well of children, with less educated parents. Yes some will do well, despite this, but overall the school standards will drop. Sorry for the rant, socialist at heart x

I wonder what the difference (if any) the teachers pay is in those sets of schools? I think lots of factors in this subject - parent involvement and encouragement, financial - better resources both in school and at home. Unless state schools are given adequate resources and teachers then it will very much stay the same. Parents though are big influence. Personally- I had 9 children, all but 2 did well. My eldest - female is a professor of engineering after bsc 1st her mark was the highest in the uk, masters and a PhD. All of them went to state schools. We put no pressure on them but encouraged. We always told them to try their best.

Children have to pass an entrance exam to go to a private school so it stands to reason their results will be better than state schools which accept everyone

Saw Kier Starmer on TV last night on his soapbox again.

Why is it that Labour judge the wealthy with such contempt, even when 99% of them put their children into private education?

Why shouldn't people who want to put their children through private education be left to do so?

Without the wealthy and clever people for the future, there will be no work for the normal folk.

I'm not sure how much difference it would actually make

Affluent parents would choose to live in the areas with the best schools and would still pay for private tuition and other beneficial activities

Pretty certain the last person judging the wealthy with contempt would be Sir Kier Starmer.

Unfortunately!

I think people should be able to privately educate their children but normal folk are intelligent too.

Not all private schools have entrance exams. What they do all have is smaller class sizes.

Michael Gove said once he wanted to be able to walk into a classroom and not be able to tell the difference between state and private. The answer is quite simple, money.

It’s all to do with criteria’s

Some private schools are all about the money

But most are about the money and grades

Need like 4 years off straight A and stuff to get in

So with them being selectife then they going to have a high marks rate than public schools who have people off all grades

But to me honest grades mean absolutely nothing

Some off the richest and best minds in the world never finshed school

They won't and shouldn't be banned. But the fact that they can use a charity status should be looked into.

He’s certainly no hypocrite - he’s never proposed anything that would adversely affect the wealthy in any material way. Unless it was by accident.

State education is grossly underfunded and will never match private schools. State grammar schools are horrific and for the most part aren’t particularly good at producing well rounded individuals at the end of it.

Banning private schools? As someone has already said it won’t make any difference. My children still wouldn’t go through the state system because I won’t jump through hoops to get them into the ‘best’ schools in the area. They’d be home schooled (not really a fan of that but needs must).

Not everyone has money that sends their children to private schools, they make huge sacrifices to do it. I take my hat off to those parents not many would do it.

I just see failing state schools embarrassing the Government because of the independent schools getting grades and there answer is not to improve them but to get rid of the 'problem'. The problem being Independent schools.

I can see the skewed logic Tom. People believe that if state schools were 'improved' whatever that means, then pupils would do as well as those in independent schools.

So I'll be Independent and make an apple pie but in order to get into my apple pie the apples must be the ripest and juciest. I'll set you the same task to make an apple pie of the state. You will be left with what I don't take. Fair enough you will have very many red, ripe and juicy apples but you will also have a lot of apples that have been battered , bruised and bitten. I won't have any of those because I carefully selected my apples so that I know they can succeed the rigorous recipe I will put them through ..... all of my apples can be successful at everything. A great many of your apples will not be able to withstand the prep or the process and will result in a substandard pie.

No matter how you try Tom you cannot improve your pie. No amount of money can improve your pie. No amount of extra curricular baking can improve your pie.

We might both be great pie makers but everyone will praise my pie and reject your pie and call you a shit pie maker.

Imagine if we had mixed the apples. Imagine no one forced you to try and compete in an unlevel kitchen. We would both have the same apples and the same outcomes.

Abolish private education.

It's not money either , though that does help. It's attitude to education mostly but when you are amongst those that have no chance in life your chances are reduced accordingly.

Get rid of private schools and the interested parents will pressurise the state.

Brighton - even Hove!

When the prime minister and others who make decisions are privately educated I don’t see them having any enthusiasm for improving the educational opportunities for those who have to rely on the state sector. Poorly educated kids end up doing boring low paid jobs which is fine and dandy for the rich kids future.
