Bishop's Stortford

So most people by now have heard the news about the shooting in Plymouth.

These things do happen, unfortunately. Hungerford, Dunblane, Cumbria, and now Plymouth.

What I can't wrap my head around is the ideology of the guy who did this. I know it's sexually frustrating when you can't get sex or get a partner, but do you really think attacking other people will make your situation any better?

For the record, I'm a 27 year old virgin male, not by choice. I also suffer badly from depression and anxiety. Yes, I know sexual frustration is annoying. But not once have I ever thought my situation is someone else's fault. Never mind hurt someone because of it. My problems are my responsibility. Do guys like this just not do introspection?

Bishop's Stortford

It's already been reported by multiple news outlets what his motivations were. I'm not sure I'm allowed to post links on here, but Google "Plymouth shooting incel" and the Times, the telegraph and the BBC have all reported he was heavily involved in incel culture.

I know you shouldn't believe everything you read, but when there's that many sources, and even a video that he uploaded explaining his motivation, I think this is probably a safe bet.

Incel and sexually frustaed are possibly only loosely linked. From what I can see, incel becomes an echo chamber of deeper and more harmful thought patterns. A deep hatred of lots of things.

Being 'heavily involved in the culture' does not make it his motive.

We likely will never know as he took his own life.

Sounds like he had mental health issues that his mother was trying to seek help for and he was still able to keep his gun and gun licence.

The police are still investigating. I will wait until they release an official statement rather than read speculation in the media. Not a dig at you OP, there have sadly been other tragedies where the media have created their own versions of the truth. The Scum newspaper and their reporting of the Hillsborough disaster to name the most prominent one.

I've also seen posts on social media pointing to other reasons as the catalyst. My view - let family and friends grieve. Its none of our business.

Do they feel sorry for him really. Sadly on occasions like this there will be trolls who use it to there advantage.

I assume all online post should be treated as though they are skeptical, especially in a day and age were foreign governments run companies and bots to sow online conflict.

Sadly the online space is in a never ending cold War footing, with lots of posts aimed at stirring up people no matter the topic.

Involuntary celibate or Incel for short.

They believe it’s not their fault that they’re not attractive to the opposite sex. Mainly young men who complain about young women ignoring them.

I once read through a thread on Reddit, it’s not just their looks that are the reason they’re ignored or avoided, when you read some of the comments.

To be charitable, deflection like this could be a way of marginalising the shock so as to act as a mental buffer against having to confront some of his own demons!

It came directly from the chief constable in the local area that they were investigating a possible link to his on line activities

It's human nature to speculate as to why somebody would do this and actually it shows that we are human and decent people that we can't understand how somebody would do this and would want to know why. Also it is not just a young person has lost their life, its a small child. In total 5 people have lost their lives and two are in hospital because of this man.

"Incels" have been a thing on the internet for decades. I think it comes down to a tribalistic mindset - a negative vacuum that people get caught in.

It's not easy to bring yourself up when you're in a bad frame of mind and place in the world, but it can be done and is worth doing; small progress leads to big progress and it pays off in dividends.

It's awful that people lose hope, but I think ultimately it's the incel community that perpetuates that - even 4chan has nice posts showing it's not the end of the world.

People caught in this cycle also tend to be young - the worth opens up dramatically (if you allow it) after a certain point.

It's a sad state of affairs when so many young men feel that hopeless and impressionable to the point that they want to take others lives. It's even more worrying how big the incel community really is.

I agree, it’s terrible to see young lads feeling this way. Just seeing how men are treated on this site is an eye opener.

Man and women are treated badly! It's how you deal with it that's the issue!

"

I agree, but there's yet to be any mass shootings all over the globe under that umbrella - it wouldn't hurt to stick to the issue for once.

There are plenty of toxic female communities on the internet anyway (FDS for one), but they just focus on treating men like shit.

Well that was rather hypocritical so you've just told me to stick to the topic while going off on a tangent and having a little dig at women!

Wow!

Pretty sure that was a dig at FDS and toxic communities not a dig at 'women'.

But it was unnecessary to have a dig at anybody. It is the whole problem isn't it.

Its pitting men against women by saying how men are treated on here which is the comment I was referring to.

What has happened is horrific and it's Just not necessary for people to start suggesting women are just as bad.

"It's already been reported by multiple news outlets what his motivations were. I'm not sure I'm allowed to post links on here, but Google "Plymouth shooting incel" and the Times, the telegraph and the BBC have all reported he was heavily involved in incel culture.

I know you shouldn't believe everything you read, but when there's that many sources, and even a video that he uploaded explaining his motivation, I think this is probably a safe bet."

Have you seen the whole video? Afaik all his stuff was taken down from youtube as a friend was trying to find it. The news wont show you everything

I dont think you can say what his motivations are without actually talking to him in person (bit hard now) or some sort of manifesto made just before the incident

Wasnt it also reported that he was American on certain news outlets which as far as i can tell isnt true (Very thick accent). So dont belive everything you read or hear in the media

"Didn't even know of this incel subculture. So many terms these days I lose track.

Same here. Never heard of it before today.

Involuntary celibate or Incel for short.

They believe it’s not their fault that they’re not attractive to the opposite sex. Mainly young men who complain about young women ignoring them.

I once read through a thread on Reddit, it’s not just their looks that are the reason they’re ignored or avoided, when you read some of the comments.

op such a sad time and no one will know the real truth ..my heart gos out for family and friends of these people ..

the home secertary fuck her brains out quote was simply immature again a great filter for blocking....

now the incel movement is a massive worry for women there are forums here there and everywhere and some of what being writen is very scary indeed"

In reality its a tiny niche of internet culture

One of the issues with minority/niche groups in the internet age is that even tiny groups can shout loudly, if they find the right online outlet. It's not just incel or similar groups where a very small minority could pose a very real threat to large numbers of people.

I just can’t get my head round the bloke out with his little girl.

I cannot begin to wonder how the mum is feeling.

I have been surrounded by people being inhumane to each other recently and even though im not personally affected it’s got me right in the feels.

So dangerous that 2 incidents have happened that could be linked to it expressly over the whole world. Half the people he killed/injured where men

Fuck knows what some of you would do if you lived in a genuinely dangerous country like SA or Brazil

I'd suggest that such discussions should be paused until some of the emotion has died down... Someone will mention the scale of the risk "just n lives over y years" and that statistical coldness will inflame those affected by the current news.

Its not and even if this wasn't solely motivated on the fact he was in an incel group it is definitely something that needs to be talked about and faced up to.

You think all incels hate on women, which isn’t true

The same as some people think all Muslim are terrorists.

That’s why it’s a fair comparison

Incels make up a tiny tiny minuscule part of the internet.

Within that movement there’s a small percentage that hate on women

And wining in that movement, there’s an even smaller subset of people that are radicalised into violence

This is why I’m against the fear mongering. You’ve just shown it yourself, you have no idea about the movement itself, you’ve just painted a picture from media hype that all incels hate women. It’s no different to seeing an extremist Islam based attack and thinking all Muslims are terrorists

They believe it’s not their fault that they’re not attractive to the opposite sex. Mainly young men who complain about young women ignoring them.

I once read through a thread on Reddit, it’s not just their looks that are the reason they’re ignored or avoided, when you read some of the comments.

op such a sad time and no one will know the real truth ..my heart gos out for family and friends of these people ..

the home secertary fuck her brains out quote was simply immature again a great filter for blocking....

now the incel movement is a massive worry for women there are forums here there and everywhere and some of what being writen is very scary indeed

In reality its a tiny niche of internet culture

These scare tactics do no one any favours either. Drumming up fear that the big bad incels are all out to get you.

I'm afraid incels are all out to get us. I don't think you realise how terrifying men like that are. I think we have every right to be afraid.

But this thread is completely taking a different turn now.

You really believe that?

I’m not saying they aren’t an issue, but there’s been far more extremist Islamic based attacks. Are we fearing all Muslims?

I think there are much bigger threats to men and woman than a tiny section of the internet and I just don’t see how fear mongering and living in fear helps us

That's a pretty stupid comparison. Why would I fear all Muslims? I didn't realise all muslims were terrorists. *eye roll*

But from what I know about incels, they do nothing but hate on women. So why shouldn't I fear men like that?

You think all incels hate on women, which isn’t true

The same as some people think all Muslim are terrorists.

That’s why it’s a fair comparison

Incels make up a tiny tiny minuscule part of the internet.

Within that movement there’s a small percentage that hate on women

And wining in that movement, there’s an even smaller subset of people that are radicalised into violence

This is why I’m against the fear mongering. You’ve just shown it yourself, you have no idea about the movement itself, you’ve just painted a picture from media hype that all incels hate women. It’s no different to seeing an extremist Islam based attack and thinking all Muslims are terrorists "

I was listening to a clinical psychiatrist who was being interviewed on the radio about an hour a go.

She said she has worked with several men who have been in who incel groups on the internet. All of whom have gone on to commit violent crime so I'd say there is definitely a risk and it shouldn't be dismissed.

Because we not allowed to because were not allowed a voice.

Yup, what are we women like huh? Gosh, we are being so dramatic because we are afraid of men who do nothing but hate on women.

Should i be as dramatic with feminists who hate Trans and Men?

You know the type who wear "Kill all men" t shirts and drink from "Male tears" mugs

You are aware there are Female Incels right?"

You are turning this into something it isn't a and its not helpful. This is a really tragic incident the is happened and has brought to light something a lot worse people had never heard of and it is worth discussing in a calm and rational way.

I'd he fearful of any Muslim who was part of a terrorist group. I'm afraid of any man who is part of an incel group.

I hope that clears it up a bit for you. I think your comparison earlier comparing Muslims to incels was ridiculous and uncalled for. I don't know why you're bringing race into this.

I'm not 100% educated on the terms. incel as it's something I've only recently discovered, but from what I know, it is groups of men who resent women and hate them, that seems to be factually correct.

Please don't sit there and act like I'm being unreasonable because men who are like that scare me.

God what a false equivalency! Incels are notoriously women hating. I’ve seen the subreddits (before they got kicked off Reddit for their women hating vitriol) and the forums! Frankly I was disgusted! 50 murders in 6 years at the hands of violent incels. How many attacks do there have to be when we as women can be scared. Not your place to tell us how we feel!

Frankly I was disgusted! 50 murders in 6 years at the hands of violent incels. How many attacks do there have to be when we as women can be scared. Not your place to tell us how we feel!"

The stat is just for N America btw the global total I’m unsure of!

now the incel movement is a massive worry for women there are forums here there and everywhere and some of what being writen is very scary indeed

It’s no different to seeing an extremist Islam based attack and thinking all Muslims are terrorists

Your being unreasonable because your labelling an entire group you have admitted to not know much about as women hating violent mass killers

Do you onderstand what be in cell movement is because I don't think you do otherwise you wouldn't be saying this. This is not about people identifying as in cell this is our movement, Which was 1st flagged in 2018 as a threat to women. "

It’s been around a lot longer than that with a fair few off branches and ideas about what it means to be within it.

There’s a small section that is radicalised that is absolutely a problem, but to point at the whole movement, and it’s branch off movements, which often get lumped in despite specifically preaching against any kind of hate towards women

The Oxford Dictionary definition of the term "incel" is:

"a member of an online community of young men who consider themselves unable to attract women sexually, typically associated with views that are hostile towards women and men who are sexually active"

And from the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

"a person (usually a man) who regards himself or herself as being involuntarily celibate and typically expresses extreme resentment and hostility toward those who are sexually active"

And this, purporting to be direct quotes from the gunman (published on BBC News)

"In between complaining about being a virgin, he [the gunman] expressed misogynistic views and suggested that sexual assaults were justified because "women don't need men no more".

Yup, from all the research I've done this is what I'm getting too. I'm not getting ANYTHING that would make me want to defend these kinds of people.

What is your definition of an incel then? Since I've got it all mixed up! "

It’s involuntary celibacy. Basically guy that want to to get laid but can’t. There’s many difference branches of it. Ranging from self help groups trying to improve themselves to the point they can get laid, to pickup artist stuff, trying to get savvy with pulling on a night out.

The biggest branch is MGTOW which is men going their own way. Often lumped in with woman hating groups, the truth is thought at its core MGTOW is literally just “if women don’t want us we will go without them”. They focus on finding other ways to be happy. Career, videos games, sports, whatever. It’s basically guys that have chosen to give up on women and focus on themselves

There is absolutely female hate in all these groups, some more then others, but it’s by guys that are extremists within the group. In general the groups core values are against hating on women

Many male spaces get lumped into these categories. Men’s rights activists often get labelled as incels, despite the fact that at their core they just want to fight for equal rights

You've even just admitted that there is hate for women in every single one of these groups.

So why shouldn't I be afraid? I don't know who the decent ones are in those groups. I don't know who the men are that will support a woman. So I will fear them all since they are a part of an incel group. And I'm not being unreasonable by fucking doing so.

You will never ever know what it is like to be a woman. So don't sit there and act like I'm the one giving incels a bad name because they make me uncomfortable.

I don’t think I told anyone to not be afraid, I think I made it pretty clear these things are issues, and if that’s what you’ve gathered from my replies then it’s my mistake

I don’t like the fear mongering from the media hype that makes people think every male is an incels, there’s incels hiding behind every corner. I think we have much bigger issues when it comes to safety that a tiny subset of the internet. And I think we should focus on those instead of fear mongering. Domestic violence is still huge, the stars coming out about how it goes up when footballs teams lose is unbelievable. I’d much prefer a focused effort on fix that issue that fear mongering. This is the media’s issue more than anything, anything to sell papers. From telling us that the next covid variant is going to kill everyone, to making people think every male is an incel waiting to attack

Should we maybe advocate for a "current affairs" room? I disagree with the opinion that this shouldn't be discussed on a swinging site as the forums are for much more than just talking about sex, but I must admit it's a little jarring seeing this thread sandwiched between "rate my XYZ" and "what's the dirtiest thing you've done" etc.

My observations from self reflection on similar stories.

Women being afraid of violent men, walking alone in the dark etc is deeply (socitally) evolutionary. Much the same ways of being afraid of spiders and ostrisisation (sp?)

Men don't really appreciate this let alone accept it or acknowledge it.

So when studf like this happens we try and argue with stats etc. Ignoring the context.

But you wouldn't convince someone to get over their feer of spiders by quoting them the number of dealy spiders in the UK. Or explaining that their fear of public speaking is nothing but an echo from when being locked out the tribe meant certain death.

The irony is the worst type of incel tribes are built on the same fears. Both sides are scared of the other side. And both sides are starti g to get worse because it's so easy to surround ourselves with people who think like us and avoid everyone else.

The echo chambers are very real

Reddit banned the incel sub and it was absolutely the right thing to do because the mods there were not doing a good job of keeping the place the right. Far too much hate was allowed to exist on there and I’m sure the mods got serval warnings and ignored it. Absolutely the right move

Then MGTOW gets banned too, where the mods work tirelessly to keep any hatred out of there. But sadly it got lumped in with incel groups and it got banned.

A very close school friend spent a good 4-5 years in the MGTOW mindset and it was absolutely the best thing that he ever did. Turned his life around 180 and he’s even got a gf now and living happily. But on paper he’s an incel. On paper everyone should be afraid of him and he’s a violent animal waiting to attack.

If he has a girlfriend he is not and insel unless they are not having sex I really don't think you understand what this is. "

He was part of the movement which helped him turn his life around and he’s now a happy guy that’s got a gf. Not a murderous creep like most of their media fear mongering wants you to believe

"My observations from self reflection on similar stories.

Not anymore. That’s the point. You don’t have to be an incel forever. There’s a lot of self improvement ideas within it. But the media fee mongering doesn’t want you to know that, they just want to spread fear

Wait but MGTOW focuses on other aspects of life rather than women or trying to get laid right? So by definition they are voluntarily celibate?

It’s still involuntary celibacy because they would like to have sex, they just have beliefs or reasons they can’t, so choose to focus on other stuff.

My friend absolutely wanted to have sex and a girlfriend, but he just couldn’t, as hard as he tried. He went MGTOW because focusing on his failing abilities to get a woman was depressing and took up a bunch of new interests, new hobbies, took up the gym, take steps forward in his career, and then one day, he was at a point where he felt worthy. Like he could get a girlfriend. Got himself on tinder and about a year or so later he had himself a girlfriend

Turned out well for him and I’m glad. I hate the fact that if you looked at him during that time he would be labelled an incel. He would literally be attributed to a woman hating violent kind of animal, despite the fact he was just trying to hit the gym, do well at work and complete dark souls far too many times to count.

Right but he recognised that his failings were his own and took steps to improve his confidence, looks and (I'm assuming) personality. Whereas the typical 4chan keyboard warrior incels literally blame women for not wanting to fuck them and refuse to accept they are the problem.

A very small, extremist portion of them do.

The core values at these groups, the actual groups, not the extremist sides, are that if you can get laid, that’s a you problem, because there’s guts all around you getting laid.

I think that's a bit of a generous portrayal... With respect to everyone who uses this site, and without intending to bring up any personal experiences or make personal attacks - it only takes a quick look around the forums to see the number of men airing their frustrations at not being able to get attention on here. A lot of the time this leads to abusive posts aimed at women they believe are "beneath" them, as if they believe they are deserving of their attentions because they think themselves better looking. Rejection is such a damaging feeling, and if you experience it time after time it starts festering at an exponential rate. If it's so easy to get wound up in an online atmosphere, imagine the vitriol that someone who also experiences this in real life could very quickly end up spewing.

I'm not discounting the story about your friend. But I'm also saying it's not realistic to label everything as fear mongering and completely negate the fact that there are dangerous people out there choosing violence every day simply because they feel rejected.

I’m only speaking from experience that these groups, from what I’ve seen, at their core values don’t promote that kinda stuff.

Sadly it’s the view. Often with the most extreme views, that shout the loudest.

And for every guy on here that makes an angry thread saying he can’t get laid and it’s women’s fault.

There’s 1000 guys silently accepting that they can’t get laid on the background. And there’s plenty more trying their best to improve themselves so they can.

But let’s focus on the loudest one, and tar all the others with the same brush.

MGTOW movement is very much anti women. The stuff they believe is absolute bull shit. I was a member of the hunting the mammoth sub on Reddit and even 2chan before it closed down. The real heart of MGTOW is dark. Almost as bad as incels. What you describe of your mate is just some basic self improvement to raise his confidence/self worth.

Even if the proportion of people posting that kind of stuff is small, you can't deny that the rate at which those posts pop up is alarming. There is definitely still a culture being fostered whereby (some, not all) men think they should be owed sex/attention. It might be a small proportion, but even that number is way too high. The fact you're trying to play that off as fear mongering is frankly quite baffling.

"My observations from self reflection on similar stories.

Some of them are just men who don’t want to involve women in their lives. They see it as too risky or they have too much to lose.

It turns out he had a shotgun licence not a firearms licence, these are different things with a shotgun licence being a fair bit easier to obtain than a full firearms licence. As for most firearms being seized in the uk, you would be pretty surprised what people can own on a full firearms certificate, I find most people are.

I read BBC News last night, followed by googling the word Incel

Kind of wish I hadn’t now, that’s some heavy shit to process. Clearly this nutcase lost it and sadly committed an horrendous act of violence. Why? Who knows? At 22 something significant has happened or been happening to him no doubt.

What makes someone Incel (the list is too long so I’ll summarise it as mental or physical) has and will always exist. I know lots of people in that boat and I feel sorry for them. What concerns me is the Incel movement underneath to which this nutcase has been influenced by no doubt.

At basic level, nature and survival of the fittest dictate who gets to mate in the animal kingdom, alpha males rule the roost. As humans we are no different at base level, however civilisation has changed that and created a world where the laws of nature no longer applied in the same way.

Nature is still on display though, from the get-go at junior school you can pick out the “alpha’s” the ones who are popular, attractive, physically fit etc, the ones who will go on to get the girl or the guy etc. You can also pick out the quiet, shy, reserved ones, the ugly ones, the overweight ones, the ones who have behavioural issues.

It becomes more clear at high school, more success for the popular and attractive kids, bullying for the quieter and overweight kids, more frustration for the others - all damaging their self-esteem.

As an adult it’s the same, at work in careers or out on the town, attractive, popular, physically fit people are more successful than others.

You can see it on fabswingers if you look closely, women have the pick of men, to which only a few men get picked - the 80/20 Pareto principle that the Incel movement quotes is very real. It’s hard to achieve success on here for the average joe.

It’s life, it’s nature and at times it’s not particularly nice, but it’s no excuse to become bitter and twisted. The harsh reality for some that it’s a woman’s world, men are no longer (and should never have been) in control.

Acknowledging where you sit in the pecking order is one thing, accepting it is another. To some it’s a driver to improve and move forward, to get the job, to get fit, to get a girlfriend/boyfriend. To others it’s an excuse to drop anchor and wallow in self-pity, drink too much, watch porn too much, live on the internet and go backwards as a person physically and mentally time and time again.

What I’ve read on BBC News last night and today concerns me.

Right now we live in a very image focussed world, looks have never been as important for success and unfortunately the amount of frustrated Incel young males will only increase IMO

The first report I heard of this was on the BBC and was surprised by the quick application of the term. I don't know much about it but just going off this thread there's a lot of contention. Whichever, he took the lives of several people old and young seemingly at random. It's tragic. The term/it's cohort shouldn't detract from the fact he was clearly disturbed.

Nope it’s been confirmed he had a standard shotgun licence (only just returned to him after an alleged assault) and as such just a standard pump action limited to 3 rounds.

I did initially wonder if it might have been a 10 shot pump action, when the BBC first mentioned "Firearms License (!)", but then realised it was just the Beeb's normal sloppy reporting!

Supposedly, the requirement for a report from your doctor is to enable the police to better make decisions on an applicant's suitability for the granting of Certificates (either Firearms or Shotguns)!

No more powerful than any other type of shotgun, its the bore and the load that is important. It could of been a 20 bore with slugs for all we know, or a 12 bore using birdshot. You are going to have a bad day if shot by either but the actual effect is different

Only if it can hold more than 3 cartridges, then it would have to be on a Firearms Certificate.

And, "good reason" to have it would have to be proven (unlike a Shotgun Certificate, where it is up to the police to have to prove unsuitability).

Not true I'm afraid.

Maximum magazine (tube and chamber) capacity of a shotgun on a Shotgun Certificate is 3 cartridges, anything over 3 has to be on a Firearms Certificate.

Yea to both assumptions… the only way to buy anything covered by either licence online is to have it delivered to a registered firearms dealer where you collect in person showing your eligibility

Like a lot of these things it started in the states with some incel mass shootings. Our tight gun laws is why we haven't heard about it so much in the uk.

You can indeed, providing you can prove "good reason" for having them.

Also "standard" ammunition firing revolvers, but you'd have to be something like a vet, or registered to put down injured deer etc.

"Didn't even know of this incel subculture. So many terms these days I lose track.

Same here. Never heard of it before today.

Like a lot of these things it started in the states with some incel mass shootings. Our tight gun laws is why we haven't heard about it so much in the uk. "

Im not sure how true that is to just say its imported from the US. Its an internet subcultre that has people from all over the world in it

Poeple wont really of heard it if they are not interested or a part of internet cultre in the first place. Sharing some memes on Facebook or Social Media isnt being part of it, just parts that have leaked into "normal" life. Like i would very much doubt many people would understand what i mean on here if i put "Kappa" after a post or referrred to "Chrischan" either

A quick Google into incel culture, its inception and why it has ended up where it has is quite enlightening and frightening at the same time.

Apparently 'involuntary celibacy' was started one by a woman as a way to try to help men overcome their shyness and fears around women and for around 5 years it was there as a purely help amd knowledge site.

Its well worth a read and if this guy was deeply involved in the culture and it was where his mind was made up to go this way then its a very worrying thing we may all find ourselves having to deal with at some point. The culture is growing and at times you can see it on fab too.

The two main site that these guys use ban women completely and their members heavily condone anger, violence and sexual assaults towards women and sometimes the public in general.

I feel deeply sorry for all involved and to a degree the perpetrator too if he was mentally unstable enough to be in a position to fall in with this crowd....we don't know what he was going through folks.
