Last of my name
Jump to: Newest in thread
So my surname is recorded less than 2,500 times worldwide and I am the last of my line (with no family to follow).
Are you the last of your line? Is your surname quite common in the general population? Should I feel guilty that when I pass this mortal coil my families achievements will be consigned to history? Or is that an archaic way of looking at legacy? |

By last of the line I guess you mean a direct line of descent ? But like any family yours will have many branches so the history and DNA lives on. Surnames coming to an end has always been quiet common with most married women losing their in the past. |

No I am the last living male of the branch as far back as can be traced. I am sure however that there are bits of my DNA everywhere (mainly curtains I think). |

Unfortunately my maiden name is likely to die out very soon. Only one cousin with a son to carry on the legacy of a double barrel name which has been passed through several generations and had very uncommonly been acquired by permission granted through royalty. |

I don't think guilt for the legacy is the way to look at it. Sadness for yourself if you feel it but no one should feel guilty about a family name.
If your ancestors cared that much they should have had more boys. |

There's just under 670 people in the world with my maiden name.
In my grandfather's lineage there's only two men to carry on the name, and one of them is almost 60 and has no children. The other isn't 30 yet, so maybe he'll keep our branch going.

"My surname is fairly uncommon. I have one brother, who has no kids, and I have 2 daughters, so that's the end of the name for our family."
I've just checked online and in 2014 there were 975 occurrences of my surname worldwide. |

I'm the last of my bloodline (and family name down that part of the tree). When I knew I didn't want kids I had a conversation with my dad about it and he said he didn't care as it's completely my choice what ai want to do eith my life. |

Ours is recorded barely 1,000 times worldwide. My first name is so unusual that I believe I'm the only person with my name in the whole world |

There are 94 with my family name (trivia we even have a coat of arm), which I don’t think are related to me… or if they are, they are very distant lol
I can only speak of people in my closest family tree and it’s just me and my cousin, and her two daughters.
I ain’t carrying the family line and I admit my dad was annoyed about it but … tough x lol |

I don’t think that wanting your name to carry on is a strong enough reason to bring a child into the world |

"Am I the only one to think… it’s just a fucking name? "
I find names fascinating. Also stands for which is family, your clan symbolising belonging and when your family have used that name for generations prior it is a big thing
Names tell a story, all names have meaning. Some are ancient and related to places like mine and others relating to the professions of your relatives.

Yeah I totally get it but I never understood why my dad really wanted me to have kids to make our family name go on… like I could really tell he cared about it. My cousin also “failed” as he never had boys so it’s not gonna carry after his daughters.
As mentioned mine is quite “ancient” and was apparently from nobility (in the continent tho) x lol “we “have the ugliest family crest I’ve ever seen with a bear holding a lamb leg (with blood dripping off) and 3 red stars |

So some of you have coats of arms? I have one as well as my name dates back to a place recorded in the Doomsday Book and some Lord or other, it has both a star and a crescent moon on it and a really big helmet |

It is fancy! I googled and the star and crescent moon is a prominent symbol of the Ottoman Empire
I thought an ottoman was a fancy box for blankets. |

I don’t know if you are joking or
But I’m telling the truth "
Truth. The star and the crescent were adopted by the kings that went on crusades, so it means the family took part in them (apologies to the people of the Middle East) |
