A week! ffs, and the worse thing about it is that the club that are paying him this will recoup most of it from the poorer sections of the world through shirt sales and sticking his image of food goods! |

I worked it out that, in basic wages alone, if he stays 2 years, he will earn £56 million
That's before we get into sponsorship, bonuses etc
I am not doubting his skill nor his investability from a business perspective, but £28 million a year
As I said, obscene |

I don't think that's the case these days...if memory serves, Ronald's move from Brazil to Spain was "paid for" by a food manufacturing company in Spain that wanted to expand in to the South American market and used him as their brand ambassador |

I love how he was so upset he could not seal a deal with Barca, but the tiny c**t could have stayed... If he took a pay cut... He's obviously not loyal to the club, just to money.
As for the wages, well, its a business at the end of the day, if as a business it can afford to pay him, then it is what it is. If they didn't pay Messi that money, where would the money go? Into the chairmans pockets probably.
I believe Messi gives alot to charities as well. |

I'm not going to decry the point that it's obscene money. It is disgusting. It's just that footballers come from poor backgrounds and there's a sense, in the media and parliament, that how dare they earn that kind of money.
I'd be very surprised if Boris' annual earnings were much different. Off shore accounts and consultancy contracts for access to power (anyone see the Cameron docs?). They believe they are entitled to it by birthright. How dare a poor kid from Argentina join their ranks.
Banker's bonuses is where the real crimes lie. They fuck us all over. Entire nations in fact.

That would pay for 30.000twelvty nurses! And if you out them on the pitch they’d score more goals too!
Daylight robbery. Chap’s got talent and marketable. If so many people did pay through the nose for shirts and tickets/tv subs to watch then the money would soon calm down. U til then. It’ll go up and up. Just like wages in other in demand market driven spheres. |

There's a lot you have to factor in. No transfer fee to pay to the outward club, so the player is getting that money instead of a club. You could then argue it's going out of the game but that a different discussion.
It's one of the 2 best players in the world, so high price is justifiable.
They have a short career so deserve big money.
If the money wasn't going to players, it'd be going to the owner, the top 1%, do they really need more money?
It should be sustainable, if ffp rules were actually abided by, the money paid to the players should be generated by the club, then it's no problem, the club is paying for their asset using it's own money. Murky when it comes to psg though so that arguement is out of the window. |

It's justified in the amount the sport generates, the Premier league alone is the biggest charitable body in the UK, and the case is similar in most other countries. Football is a sport that stems right from the field on council estates and school pitches. Very similar to boxing in that regard. They have lower and working class roots, but somehow football gets a really bad rep? One footballer alone managed to shame the government into helping poorer kids eat during school holidays. Do you understand how much money shirts with messis name on generate? Or Ronaldo, Beckham back in the day, Cantona, Rooney? It makes their wages look like pittance. And huge chunks of the money generated goes into charity, society, youth football, schools, sports colleges grants etc. That game of kicking a ball about is more important and beneficial to society from walking age onwards than any other. |

Considering most are scouted at school age, and don't finish their education properly, that short career, roughly 18 to 30,may be the only thing they ever do, and that's if they get to the end without a devastating injury. I never see people bemoaning tennis players or racing drivers for their money, maybe because they are acceptable middle to upper class sports |

By generating ten times that amount, by having dedicated his life to the sport, by being one of the two footballers who are the literal best to have ever done it. I bet that by the end of the week after Messi shirts go on sale, his name will have generated billions. |

Better example, let's take Elon musk vs some not so rich eccentric person, people can use far more easily use their money to corrupt the ideals of the poorer one but would have a much harder (if not impossible) time using money to corrupt musk? |

"It’s strange to think that he, a footballer, gets paid more than the UK Prime Minister, who has the heavy burden of trying to run a Country and all that entails.
Messi is one of the best ever in history to do what he does, Boris isn't even the best in his own party
I think that is besides the point. Would the best prime minister we've had deserve over half a million pounds a week! No they would not
Tell you what though, if prime ministers were paid that much, they wouldn't be so corruptible, it's why putin is untouchable and why trump didn't give a fuck what he did, they have fuck you money
I take it you don't believe he deserves to be paid over half a million pounds each week then
Who, Boris? No, he's shit. Of course politicians earn far far more than is disclosed in dodgy deals and backhanders.
I'm talking about the football player not Boris
Yes, he does, because he generates far more. If you're the best, you deserve to be paid as if you're the best. Simple
Not that much money, I can't see it "
If you generated billions you wouldnt feel you deserved to earn millions? Of course you would. And you can say, I'd rather it went to better places, but if it didn't go to you, would it go to better places anyway? Most likely not, at least if it goes to you you have the choice to direct it to where you want it to go, much like Messi does with his money |

Did you seriously just say Putin is not corrupt..??
No, I said he is incorruptible, he is corrupt, but through his own choice, not because someone richer can pay him to do what they want.
What..??
He is incorruptible but corrupt..!!
But because he chooses to be corrupt he isn’t influenced by his paymasters…
Right…

There’s a difference between being corrupt and corruptible and incorruptible.
I didn’t get lost anywhere or confused anywhere.
How on earth can you be incorruptible, your words(that means you can’t be corrupted) and be corrupt ( your words)at the same time.
The confusion lies in on place only.. |

They should just outright ban transfers and restrict players to their local teams only.
Born in Manchester you play for Manchester based teams...
Make it a sport built on pride rather than profit, I remember before the premier league (last time I watched a football match) we had just got into the commercialisation of sport and seeing a foreigner playing for Torquay United was almost unthinkable. All of my friends were tq fans because we went to the ground on weekend to watch them play and on a Wednesday to see them train.
I know at least 6 of my year in school that played for the youth team, and worked up to the main squad.
Now they don't stand a chance because even as a 3rd division team they are all foreign imports |

Is that the fault of people that earn more? No. These are entirely different things, athletes and musicians are paid based on what they generate in their industry and field. Their money isn't even in the same pool of money as nurses, do you think nurses would suddenly be paid more because elton John's never existed? No. They are paid to do a job and accept the wage that comes with the job. Should it be more, yes, but to think that one set of people earning more based on their profile and expertise has any impact on someone being paid to do a job is foolish. |

If he generates it. And it's not a question of deserves, these people make other people more money than they themselves earn. And they are paid accordingly, in fact probably (especially in the case of musicians) underpaid for their generation. Nurses, soldiers, police, fire fighters DESERVE to be paid more for what they do, but they aren't paid less because someone on a pitch is paid more. |

It’s simple. Supply and demand.
What is it you do for a living? Imagine a rival company offers to take over your contract and double your pay, but you only get a career of 10 years or so, unless you’re an average worker then you may only get 3 or 4 years.
Would you do it?
Yes there are starving people in the world, and yes, the money could be better spent elsewhere but this is what Messi does, he brings enough value into PSG that allows them to spend ridiculous amounts on his wages. If no one bought his shirt or no one went to the Parc De Princes to watch a game of football, then PSG wouldn’t be able to pay that amount for him. |

Because that’s what he’s worth to PSG in terms of merchandising etc. It’s simple.
How much does a Hollywood film star get just for “acting”
How much does a pop star get for largely miming and having their voice autotuned in a studio.
Or Lewis Hamilton for driving a car fast (2mil plus per race) federer for hitting a ball with a racket (2mil plus per exhibition match) etc etc. Fucking, Obama, 600 grand for making a speech, Tony Blair 300 grand for a speech at a world hunger conference...
Comes nowhere near £560,000 per weekobama getting 600k for a speech comes very close….. oh wait it’s more.
Do he give a speech every week? He makes a lot of them. Not to mention the interviews, books, endorsements. Which he's entitled to, his name sells. He generates, so he earns
You think he deserves that kind of money?
Yes, because he is Obama, and the money people will pay to see him talk eclipses what he earns.
And that means he deserves 600 grand a speech
If he generates it. And it's not a question of deserves, these people make other people more money than they themselves earn. And they are paid accordingly, in fact probably (especially in the case of musicians) underpaid for their generation. Nurses, soldiers, police, fire fighters DESERVE to be paid more for what they do, but they aren't paid less because someone on a pitch is paid more. "

Are you and numbers okay with each other?
Yes are you?
You skipped past the two examples of high paid sportsmen and then said 600 grand per speech was nowhere near 560k?
It is only near that if he is doing a speech every week "
He earns around 2.3mill per month. Whether that's speeches or appearances or interviews, it's close for literally just talking. But talking while being Obama |

It's not though Torquay United are not a league team any more and still have a team of imports, when I was in school 6 from my year were on the youth team and worked up to the main team, the team paid their college fees and supported them from secondary school to adulthood. Now nobody from Torquay plays for torquay |

Almost funny but I don't actually care how good the team is I don't follow football anymore I stopped back when Blackburn won the PL.. so what 1992?
I'd rather we go back to local and national pride and fuck the transfer system off.
Torquay United's youth team would pick the best kids from the local schools and nurture them into adulthood providing funding for education and equipment giving 17 year olds something more than they have now in that town.
But no instead we will just import players and our local teams can can have zero representation of it's locals other than a name. |

I’m a professional football manager (obviously pre Covid) lol
But when I want to see “local football” I’ll go and watch lower league football. And when I say lower League, I mean below the National Conference level lol
You can still have local pride watching lower league football. I enjoy going to see Marine and Towyn for example. But I love football so I’ll watch anyone |

Yep same with everything and it's a shame because money hasn't made the sport any better in reality it's still 22 players kicking a ball. And the teams community support is dead. When I was in school tqs ground is built on the side of the school I went to and we would talk to the players and watch them train almost weekly |

I agree in part but if the teams owners and managers aren't putting into the community why ate the kids going to try? It's not a 1 way system in youth development. |

I used to think this but when I realised that a lot of these footballers have no childhood and sign to clubs as young as 7. That's dedicating their lives to the sport, dealing with the backlash if they make an error. Suffer sports injuries. Have their personal lives under a microscope and constantly harassed by the paparazzi. I wouldn't want that for any amount of money. |

Football is a cash making industry. People in the city are making obscene amounts of money same as CEOs and whatnot. Its easy to single out footballers as their salaries are splashed all over the papers. If no one watched it they wouldn't get these fees. It's the same when people complain about women in sport not earning as much but women on mass do not attend women's football matches. |

He could've played for free and Barcelona couldn't have kept him. They're a financial shit show and can't even register their new players.
As far as his wage goes, it's an obscene about of money but with the sponsors and short sales, it'll be interesting to see how much money he brings into the club compared to his wage. |

Players moved teams well before the Premier league, its not about loyalty, wheres the loyalty from clubs to players? Players get dumped by clubs every transfer window. And it is a job, so like any other why wouldn't they take the chance to compete at higher levels when given the chance? |
