I haven't but have a few friends that have. Para's, a liney and a couple of infantry chaps.

I'd go in the RAF if I could have my time again. I don't regret the path my life's taken but that does make me think..

81 years ago exactly to the day, my Dad lost his Spitfire to enemy fire and parachuted into the sea where he swam for several hours before being rescued.

A very hard act which, thankfully, I never had to follow as I didn't inherit his courage. However, I'm here because of his survival and the bravery of him and his colleagues on that and subsequent days of the Battle of Britain.

I applied as a driver in the RLC (army) but because of a skin condition was told I wouldn’t be accepted.

Was the only thing I ever wanted to do. If I’d have known before having children I could have appealed their decision, I would have reapplied after I spent two years training ready with a few friends that I met based near me (infantry) before applying to give me a better advantage. Still beat myself up about it too

Ain’t heard anyone say that since I left "

Likewise, the hours spent whilst the checks were made. Made some jump when opening internal doors, between sections.

Couldn't care less for the forces. Anyone who wants to kill for another persons cause needs their head read. Especially for 'their queen' . Nuts

Anyone want to swap some blue liner stamps for their beer ration?

On my first ship the josh told me I was a smoker, even though I wasn't, he said I'll soon learn what do with the stamps in the mess.

"Got accepted as an Articifer in the Royal Navy, failed the medical due to a. Injury.

can you re apply? Or is it a lifelong injury? What's an articifer?"

It was partially blind in one eye, due to a mate messing with an air pistol. It was nice to get through the aptitude tests though.

I was told that I could re apply next year, but my eye sight never got good enough to join.

An Articifer was an officer in the engineering branch, you were hated by both ranks and officers. They worked hard to get to where they are, an Articifer gets the rank due to their knowledge.

Agreed,

Alongside humanitarian aid, firefighting, delivering fuel, peacekeeping, civil aid, assisting the NHS and not just during the covid climate, assisting the coastguard, drug deterrence patrols, building flood defences. I'm sure I have missed another dozen, anyone want to add some to educate the ignorant.

Dude. Seriously?

You've no clue at all. FFS.

If you actually hold the view that the men and women of our forces joined up for that reason, you're the one who has problems.

What about the forces delivering oxygen and PPE for the NHS last year. What about the RAF and army helping when that dam was bursting a couple of years ago in Cumbria. What about the navy and airforce sending humanitarian aid all round the world. What about the women in Afghanistan who have had real rights for the last 15 years due to the soldiers being over there and protecting them. What about the soldiers and aircrew who stood in for the fire brigade when they were on strike?

What about cowards who will sit behind a keyboard and slag us off for serving our country when needed. Not just “killing people”

Tifs aren’t officers. It was a fast track for junior rates in engineering.

Wouldn't like to be a translator for the British army right about now, or to be trained by them. Thoughts and prayers with the people being massacred today.

If I was going to do the army again I'd probably do the same, a front line grunt but I'd probably end different. Either stay in the special training or transfer to embassy protection. Or maybe even moved to being protection on the shops sailing around Africa. Pretty boring writing computer code.

There’s always some overly privileged, ignorant fool that don’t know what they have until it’s taken form them, then they need the very organisations that they have been bad mouthing.

No body kills for Queen and country, they defend their colleagues and those that need protecting.

Didn’t take it up because I went into a different career entirely but the selection process was great fun.
