Climate change
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hotter temperatures, record forest fires- Greece, USA, flooding uk in Germany, China, desertification, displacement of communities, meat accounting for 6/7ths of global food production- methane and deforestation.
What changes do you think are coming to our lifestyles to combat climate change

We should have made changes 100 years ago you can't change anything now

It's an endless cycle that was happening long before humanity, and it will continue long after the extinction of quite a few species on this planet |

The question is who going to stand up and say
It's not OK to have more than 2 kids
It's not OK to fly around the world
It's not OK to build on green belt land
It's not OK to keep someone alive that should dead
It's not OK to cut down trees
No one because money talks louder than earth itself

We are currently living in the ‘Goldilocks’ zone. Enough distance away from the sun to keep our planet temperate, not too far away for it to become too cool.
A tad either way and the planet either burns or freezes! We are quite happily and ignorantly contributing towards that happening at ‘some’ stage in the future and at this rate it won’t be that distant! |

Yes, it just happens, and always will
The Earth has a natural cycle and we (the Human race) will have to learn to adjust to it as best as we can to be the "overlords" and protectors of this planet that we inhabit.
Fossil fuels were buried millennia ago in the natural evolution of time, now we see fit to dig down and drag them to the surface again, only for our own usage.
This fragile planet has a good recovery rate, no matter what us "humans" throw at it |

Yep, we’re exacerbating a warming cycle that would have happened regardless.
We’re also not at the highest ever levels of atmospheric CO2. May 2021 there was a peak of 415 ppm, but similar levels have reached way before humans appeared (3 million years ago the same concentration occurred). Prehistoric times have seen way higher concentrations, up to 2500 ppm, apparently.
They both had mitigating conditions however, so our impact shouldn’t be ignored and removing our dependency on a realistically finite resource like fossil fuels isn’t bad thing either way. |

We're on course for continuing to increase the level of damage, unless we make substantial changes immediately. The longer that we leave it, the harder it gets to reverse things and some may be irreversible.
Messing with the highly complex and balanced climate systems is dangerously stupid and irresponsible. We should have a global system of severe punishments for state and business leaders that take steps causing harm, including financial and liberty of perpetrators.
The gulf stream warms the UK and Europe and is showing signs that it may trip to its lesser minor mode, which will especially affect the UK - this hasn't been approached for thousands of years.
Whilst the severe weather experiences have helped to inform us of the dangers, they are as nothing, should we increase the global temperature by a couple of degrees, as we are projected to do. Such an average increase may sound like it's not much, local experienced temperatures will shift by a substantially greater amount.
Unfortunately, the types of leaders that many of the populations elect are on populist principles, where unfeasible, simple slogans for highly complex matters, win the gullible mindsets. They don't engineer the solutions that are needed, which will be expensive in the short term but much cheaper than if we take insufficient action.
Too little, too late is going to create a world that is less hospitable for us and many species we share the planet with. It's unacceptable to postpone the required action, forcing that and much more on to future generations, who will rry to pay our debt.
The worst case is that we pass several tipping points, where the cascade of changes becomes almost unstoppable. The moral obligation is ours to take the necessary steps. I think our meat based diet and economic growth model both have to change, as small elements of what we have to do. Personal, corporate and state accountabilities need to be defined and implemented. |

“You will own nothing and you will be happy”
The world will still burn, billionaires will still launch themselves into space in giant dildos whilst chastising us for not recycling. Is climate change real? Yes. But do not think for one minute that the people with all of the power and all of the money care. They made their billions by encouraging consumerism that has accelerated the destruction of this planet and they couldn’t give two fucks about what will happen to it when they are long dead. |

The only thing history tells us we don't learn from history
It will happen anyway just not as fast as it has
We as a race do not care as long as we have what we want
Mother nature will try it's best to stop over population
But no we have to get involved
Did we rush for a cure for foot and mouth in the 80s no
Covid comes along we do everything to stop it.
Millions should have died
Then just to top it off we rush to go on holiday
Yep stupid is what stupid wants

Atmospheric carbon has been higher than it is now, the earth has also been almost entirely covered by ice. Sea levels have risen and fallen hundreds of metres. Does any of this mean that human activity is not the cause of current trends? No, absolutely not. Will humans wipe out all life on earth? Again, no, we would become extinct ourselves long before we could achieve this. However, history is very clear that human suffering is increased massively when large changes happen. We in this country are enjoying the longest period of peace we've had in millennia so have forgotten what it is like to live through war - that is something that happens to other people in other countries. We seem to believe that we have somehow evolved into better people so war isn't something we need to concern ourselves over. You only have to look at how people reacted to an imagined shortage of toilet paper last year to realise the carnage there will be if drinking water were scarce. You only have to look at people's attitudes to immigrants to understand what will happen if sea level rises force the population of London, Liverpool, Cardiff etc to leave their homes and seek somewhere new to live.
Sure the planet will continue just fine with or without anthropomorphic climate change but anyone who believes rapid climate changes, changes in sea levels etc are all going to be taken in our stride by a logical compassionate sharing human race is an utter fool.

Unfortunately, the human species is totally unable to fix this issue. Some individuals will try, some countries will "try" by introducing laws, but by proportion it won't be enough and most people who care don't actually translate that caring into making the scale of change needed. It isn't just a case of taking your recycling to the recycle bin. The level of change needed to "fix" this is enormous and simply won't happen.
In my opinion anyway. Happy Monday ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Study shows that more elephants get killed for ivory than any thing else
We cut down more of the rain forests than ever before
Meaning less carbon is taken out of the air at night

What changes do you think are coming to our lifestyles to combat climate change
"
After the first lockdown, people couldn't go to the beach without throwing everything they took onto the same sand they lay on. This despite widespread publicity of thousands of animals dying from micro plastics or getting trapped in floating rubbish islands.
What changes are coming? Likely very few as people adopt at such a slow rate. There has to be a dramatic sea change in policy. By that I mean:
A huge reduction in the price of electric vehicles.
Greater numbers of alternative powered trains/planes/buses/commercial vehicles - electric, solar or hydrogen.
Business investing in cleaner energies like those mentioned above.
Fashion adopting better working practices - less fast fashion, denim using less water, more recycled fabrics.
Housing, roads and infrastructure using less carbon intensive products.
The argument that this is an Earth cycle should not stop the adoption of new technologies as we'd still be riding horseback, living in caves and collecting wood otherwise.

7 billion people need 7 billion units of food and liquid a day, which means 7 billion units of pollution.

Absolutely. I just love people getting all agitated that others don't follow their advice on carbon footprint reduction yet have several kids. Unless you're personally cutting down and burning the rainforest, having a child is by far biggest thing you can do to increase your carbon footprint.

Your media articles etc aren't the credible scientific research evidence, which do have the full evidence that you were trying to deride. Sad, as it would be positive to get our buried heads out of the places we're burying them. It's very attractive to want to believe that there's no problem and we can just carry on as before, without bothering to make any changes.
The world, especially our leaders, have been doing that for too long. |

Climate change is earths natural cycle, what we can do is to change the environment we live in, by lowering the emission rate and use less plastic to mention few things, also remember that when humans dont exist, earth will return to its normal self after few cycles. |
