Alpaca put to sleep..

We have a beef farm and have to test and vaccinate our cows due to bovine TB an outbreak could mean loss of the entire herd and potentially spread to humans. So I can see why they’re putting it down. It’s highly contagious. |

"The owner says the tests have been false positives."
The test came back positive twice. There is less than a 0.5% chance of a false negative. I understand it's distressing for the owner. When you have animals that may catch and transmit TB it's a chance you take, she would have understood this with being a veterinary nurse. |

Depending on what media source said, the tests administered apparently only have a small percentage of accuracy and aren't considered fully reliable, but the Govt vets still decided they were enough to have the alpaca put down
Add in that two other alpacas in the same group tested OK & weren't infected. |

Considering we are slaughtering native wild native animals (badgers) because “apparently” they spread TB to cattle (regardless of numerous studies hypothesising that it could actually be the other way round) and the fact that we slaughter cattle that contract TB. This seems like the right decision.
Is it sad? Yes. Is the alpaca a native species. No. Are they endangered? No. It’s just another domesticated animal. I see the keeping of llamas as “vanity farming” and whilst I applaud farmers diversifying, if this is just a single animal keep as a “pet” I shake my head in disbelief. I wish people would stop taking animals out of their natural environment and keeping them in inappropriate places for their own pleasure. |

Geronimo was given two TB tests years ago , and although they were positive he's survived over 4 years with supposed TB and usually they die within weeks so I think it's owner has every right to question the results . All she's asking for a fresh new test and the government won't grant it for " legal reasons " .
In other words they know the poor thing is perfectly healthy and they will look incompetent when it comes back negative.
So sorry but it's a needless bloody murder imo !! |

What are alpacas farmed for? Milk.? Wool? Meat? Rare animal farm grants? Tax breaks? |

From what I heard in the news, the owner has been fighting this for 3 - 4 years. She has been fighting a case on an Alpaca she bought not bred, so should probably sue the breeder.
In all that time, TB would now be in the land (ground) on her farm? It seems a very silly to risk fighting for such a period of time. |

Although if the herd is large Defra will test the meat according to food hygiene standards and sell it on, where it could be consume by humans (most restaurants and supermarket refuse such meat as the potential for litigation and negative publicity is too high)
However Geronimo is likely to burn as if he is buried, he could be dug up by a scavenger and thus the cycle of infection begins again. |

Can't believe that the owner would let the animal be treated like that, and put through all that stress being dragged away by strangers. Why did she/him not call the vet beforehand to put down the animal peacefully. |

I thought that when they showed it on the news they had the poor thing walk to his death was distressing just to watch it on the tv never mind the poor animal RIP Geronimo |

The local vet refused to have anything to do with this slaughter I believe .. so left to outsiders ... |

I read also, the alpaca had been injected with proteins based on bovine tb so the tests would show anti bodies.
Not at all surprised if its yet another government fuck up., the strategy is failing as btb is on the rise after killong badgers cows pigs etc..

Im only repeating what the scientist said
"Effectiveness of the cull. Defra has said it wishes its policy for controlling TB in cattle to be science-led. There is a substantial body of scientific evidence that indicates that culling badgers will not be an effective or cost-effective policy "
If that's wrong then take on the scientists
