Fisherman's Blues always gets me. Scotty's first "whoop" as the whole band gets going is pure joy. It's one of my favourite non-cliché four chord sequences.

I heard a while back that long intros are a thing of the past. With the way people buy most of their music on line, it needs to be recognised and catchy in the first 5 seconds. Bit sad really.

Really?? But the intro is the best bit. It gives you the time to get that adrenaline rush as your brain processes and recognises it as one of your favourite songs.

Sad times for music..

There's a track by track breakdown of all the clav parts he played on that somewhere on YouTube. It sounds deceptively simple but deconstructed, that funky riff is incredibly complex. Probably why I could never play it at all convincingly on the guitar

Up beat, slow it doesn't matter, an intro is exactly that. Setting the mood, building you up, getting you into it. Hopefully established artists will wright what they want to wright and not what the accountant suggests.

Same Old Song, The Four Tops. That drum roll! Used to great effect in the Coen Bros' Blood Simple (jukebox starts and "tonight, we're in Detroit").

While we're on Motown, You Keep Me Hangin On. That morse code guitar. Again there's a great isolated Funk Brothers backing track (no vocals) on YouTube that proves beyond a doubt that those musicians were from another world, such amazing ideas and originality.
