Farewell Tokyo, Hello Paris
Jump to: Newest in thread
I expect a few sour pusses poo pooing the Olympic's on this thread but really couldn't care less.
The last two weeks has been amazing and following the past 18months not only for the UK but everyone around the world the Olympics gave us the opportunity to pull together and enjoy something away from the doom and gloom, the sadness of many lives lost and many lives changed forever.
It's given us the chance to appreciate sporting excellence at its best.
Sadly no spectators allowed but in many ways it kind of added to how special and different these games have been and sport, unity and diversity has been the real winner.
I'm pretty emotional today and so proud of not only all of team GB but all the athletes and support staff that have once again given is the greatest show on earth and given many hundreds of millions of people worldwide a Chance to feel part of a worldwide community.
Bring on 2024.
Thank you Tokyo and the people of Japan for an excellent games. |

"I’ve enjoyed it, did miss the spectators though. Commonwealth games to look forward to now "
I imagine that with crowd's it would have been another level of brilliant and yes it was missed but I also think it proved that sport can overcome.
Ive filled out the pre registration for tickets for Paris. |

As usual BBC’s coverage was pathetic and mostly highlights with brain donor Hazel Irvine who knows as much about sport as I do brain surgery . And who in the bbc decided what sports they showed absolutely nothing of never even got a mention Thank god for Eurosport and what coverage if any will bbc give to Paralympic Games in a couple big weeks time ? 5 minutes of highlights at 6am |

The BBC didn’t have much choice from what I can gather as the IOC sold the rights for Tokyo & Paris (so preserve coverage for future games) to Discovery & then there was the 8 hour time difference.
The Paralympics are being shown on C4

I have loved it all, some exciting sporting events I hadn’t seen before, water polo, skateboarding, hand ball etc, from the thrill of winning to the tears and raw emotions of not achieving their goal, it’s had it all
Big shout to Jason Kenny, 7 yes 7 Olympic medals now, amazing |

That is right… the ioc sold the pan-European rights to discovery, which meant that they were only allowed to show 2 live events at any one time…. Just as well discovery own Eurosport and they agreed with sky Europe to have the 9 overflow channels…..
It will be interesting to see if they do the same thing for the Paralympic Games…
I am another who has pre registered for Paris tickets…..
I have to say I didn’t miss not having the crowds as much as I thought because the support staff made enough noise |

The boxing was great. Team GB really turned up the volume. |

"I never watched much of it...
Was it on at night then highlights the next day..
I wonder if it's outgrown itself.. some of the events are a joke in my opinion "
Nope it's not outgrown itself at all.
And just because a sport isn't supported in this country doesn't mean it's any less important.

It has bankrupted many hosts... America has a city still paying off its debt... |

I’ve never seen handball before on the telly but it’s very big in Europe, the French teams were going crazy in the final it was great viewing |

Well that's more to do with the country not the event.
In my opinion London did it right.
Paris likewise will use existing site's and temporary venue's.
Sport is a powerful and positive thing. |

I kinda not liked having the crowds. Sounds odd, but the partisan cheering does my head in a little. Seeing the triple jumpers clap to noone was odd tho.

"Slim it down or the writing is on the wall..
It's should be track and field and little else ..
Your completely missing the point of the Olympics."
It would of been held at one venue in Greece I would guess..mainly track and field with a few others..
Chick out golf, tennis, BMX and Surfing, skateboarding etc... |

I’ve loved every minute of it and so have my kids. It’s created chats we never would have had. They’ve learnt so much about the disciplines and events and we have been in awe of the athletes at times
Who knew skateboarding and BMX biking would have us on the end of our seats |

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’ |
I didn't like the surfing but was supprisingly transfixed by the skateboarding.
I have done a bit of this as a kid but stopped as I got too accident prone - got a scar to show for it but I can see why young guns would like it! Mind you, you have protection now - wasn't like it when I was younger...
I also enjoyed the climbing. Loved the track & field and swimming. |

One thing I will say is.
Whilst I'm very much for the new sport's introduced with the aim to engage the younger generation and it definitely seems to have worked.
France 2024 breaking!!
Yes they have introduced break dancing I'm not sure where this fit's in the Olympics but I'm sure it must somewhere.
Speaking as someone who grew up in the 80's as breaking and body popping emerged I was very much into it and took part in many dance off's.
It's incredibly hard and the practice required is right up there I was just a teen-ager dancing on street corners and local youth club's but the level it's at today they are professional athletes.
But I'm really not sure about it being an Olympic event.
Will have to wait and see I guess. |

Will it just be a one off like the karate this year though? |

No idea, guess it's popularity will dictate that.
I'd imagine that it will be amazing to watch entertainment rather than an out and out sport.
But I'm my humble opinion more of a sport than dressage. |

And as for jumping fences ..
All I see is the jockey hanging on for dear life.. "

I jest
I'm terrified of horses and the work it must take to get a horsey to do exactly what you want and know what to do must be huge.
And years of trust built between the rider and horsey. |

Or in the Modern Pentathlon .
Just 20 minutes ...
Any horse whisperer worth his salt would tell you it's not feasible . |

"GB team too white and too sub urban according to the news..."
Here's a list of all the medal winners. Seems a pretty decent mix to me. Lots of non-white people and lots of people from ordinary "working class" backgrounds. Also just because someone is white, it doesn't mean they are financially privileged. |

There was a lot of competitors that had to crowd fund themselves as they had lost their grants etc, I mean some of these were medal winners ffs, it’s a crazy situation to be in |
