So this might be an ironic post but....

Do you think people get a little too personal with the serious posts in the forums?

I mean, the posts are just supposed to be a discussion point and an exchange of ideas but it often becomes a bit argumentative.

Yes they do.

I think some people are genuinely offended by things - but many just search the forums looking for something to get offended at.

That’s been my experience of the last 7 years or so anyway. X

The problem is O.P. that there are many people who cannot have dialogue - they can only fight. They assume everything is a war to be won. They want to stamp on your ideas , rather than expanding their own thoughts with yours or coming to a better understanding.

Then there is the other angle .... some , when you aske them a question or offer an alternative point of view think that they have been attacked and in order to save face they become indignant and defensive and will say ANYTHING , even if it's not related to the discussion in order for their low self esteem to now sink any deeper.

These are usually the quick to scream offence brigade who can't tell you why they are offended but just keep telling you what you said ( even though you know what you said ) and keep on saying they are offended.

Remember before Facebook and Internet forums became popular the vast majority of people didn’t debate with people having different view points , unless you travelled or went to uni people tend to be with people who think the same so such different opinions probably scare them

I think some people are genuinely offended by things - but many just search the forums looking for something to get offended at.

That’s been my experience of the last 7 years or so anyway. X

Offendables love an argument, sometimes even arguing, just for the sake, despite knowing their "Point" is BS."

"So this might be an ironic post but....

Do you think people get a little too personal with the serious posts in the forums?

I mean, the posts are just supposed to be a discussion point and an exchange of ideas but it often becomes a bit argumentative.

No it doesn't

Too late mate. I've already done that joke. Lol"

I go through phases of using the forums a lot then take a break if I feel it's needed.

If I'm passionate about a topic and think somebody is veing rude or unpleasant about others, or generalising them I will get on my little soap box, but at the same time I'll be cheeky and have a joke on more light hearted threads.

There are always things to take seriously in life, others not so much.

I like to see a mixture of topics on the forums but some definitely become toxic.

See Meghan Markle's birthday.

Having said that - there are those who start a post that is deliberately incredibly contentious - knowing full well that all hell will be let loose - then just sit back and wait.

The ‘fetches the popcorn’ brigade won’t add an opinion on such threads but are happy to stoke the flames.

I generally loathe such threads and find them uncomfortable to read (until they’re pulled by the mods - usually) - but occasionally my inner evil bitch will take a peek!

What are you going to do with the word now you own it?

You could bring out Grannies Offendable Crumpets. They might not sell so well though.

Yup, totally agree with everything you said. Especially the uncomfortable read part and I'm also guilty of the peeking regardless of the discomfort. It's one of those situations where you just can't look but you have to look.

I tend to find some people 'argue' from either an emotional/moral standpoint or a dispassionate viewpoint.

Those using an emotional argument tend to get more 'worked up' over differing points of view.

I once had a discussion with someone on Twitter where their ending comment was 'No woman should die ever for any reason'. I didn't have a chance to question the logic of that.

Yes some people do take things too personally and get too wound up but then again, sometimes it's topics that affect people's real lives and it's hard if people are being unpleasant or ignorant.

This will inevitably happen on a site where people have a tendency to take offence to many things be it a dislike to a picture, a dislike of someone chatting to someone you chat too within the forums, a verification confirming someone has met someone you like or simple jealousy of someone. An argumentative attitude usually comes from an unhappiness within yourself or lack of self belief where you lash out at someone who is perhaps just having a lighthearted discussion. Some people thrive on drama and often start threads to get a reaction which in turn gives them validation - it can be a vicious circle or a case of who’s voice is louder, personally the forums for me should be a place to discuss whatever you choose…choose being the operative word, don’t like a topic move on x
