a turbo is driven by exhaust gasses, where as a supercharger is mechanicly driven. they do much the same job, think of a turbo as twofans conected, one in the exhaust flow and one in the inlet, so as exhaust drives one fan the other drives air into the engine.
a supercharger is only on the intake side usualy driven by a belt, like an alternator |

Superchargers work better at lower engine speeds. Turbos need higher engine speeds to operate properly in an ideal system vehicles would have both with the turbo cutting in as the supercharger reaches the end of its power band. |

There are also two types of supercharger, screw and root. They are both mechanically driven but have different power delivery. A root supercharger works virtually constantly whereas a screw will boost around 2000rpm (depending how its set up). |

merlins had to be supercharged as they only have 5" stub exhausts no exhaust pipework to add a turbo to |

And also because the air at altitude is thinner. |
