Most startling film you ever saw

As in, you came to it with one expectation (maybe from reviews or word of mouth) and came away with something completely different.
Two for me. Baise-Moi, scripted by and starring ex-sex workers. The Guardian didn't like it but I did. Like a sort of flipped misandrist Tarantino film but better and grittier than Tarantino.
Other one, Eraserhead. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person I know who gets this film. It's weird beyond belief, surreal, dreamlike, nightmareish. Large tracts of weird droning noise and visuals with odd little vignettes like the radiator lady that are ridiculously poignant.
Only reason I'm not mentioning anything by Tarkovsky is because I knew what to expect and it delivered. |

There's a cult cinema club once a month near me that's showing Eraserhead next month. I saw "Holy mountain" last month and went in knowing nothing about the film. It was certainly open to interpretation lol. |

Do it! It's entirely possible you'll think it's the biggest dogpile of pretentious art student rubbish you ever saw. Or it might change your entire view of whatever the hell a film is supposed to be. |

I'm going to research these recs! I really like unsettling, disturbing films that fuck with my head.
Forgot to mention Lars von Trier of course. Nymphomaniac and Melancholia are weird as fuck but good. |

12 years a sl*ve - Won loads of awards but I had to leave because it was terrible, would have been a great story line probably if not dragged out.
Dead Mans Shoes - Amazing film but hardly anyone has heard or saw it. Deserves much more credit than it got. |

Another one. White Tiger. Russian film about a guy who died in a burnt tank then survived and could talk to tanks, and hunts down the German Tiger that is killing T-34s. Completely bizarre, oddball and really a bit good. Weirdest and most irrelevant twist at the end. |

I guess where my head was going with this was films that unsettle you, don't do the expected and resolve in a happy ending or any sort of ending, or not the ending you expect.

Eraserhead! Still gives me occasional bad dreams and it's got to be 20 years or more since i saw it.
Tarkovsky - Solaris, and Stalker. Excellent.
One that got inside my head so much that I couldn't finish it, actually had to walk out of the cinema - Haneke's "Funny Games". The breaking the fourth wall thing, and making the _audience_ personally responsible for the awful things happening on screen, because you keep watching. The only way to beat the movie at it's own game is to walk away. |

That was the original 1997 foreign version of Funny Games. I believe that the 2007 English language remake is just as horrendous though, as it's a shot for shot remake of the exact same script by same director, just with american actors. |

Hostel is the only film that's actually brought sick to the back of my throat the scene where they they toss the woman's I and the bloke has to cut it off. The only happy when I first watched it second time I was ok |

Agree about Midsommar. Possibly the most haunting aspect of all the horror is that it's not the product of an axe-wielding maniac but rather a traditional, bucolic way of life. |

I worked in a video shop as a kid & the owner recommended it me to watch.
The end scene is horrific.

There's some very strange films from the late 60s/early 70s which have an otherworldly vibe about them, I'm thinking along the lines of 'If', 'Witchfinder General' and my favourite 'Unman Wittering and Zygo" |

Yes and read the book it was based on by Virginie Despentes.
I haven't really been shocked by most of the more extreme films because I usually know what it's going to be like before I watch.
One that did shock was 'Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom' based on the Marquis de Sade's book.

Yes and read the book it was based on by Virginie Despentes.
I haven't really been shocked by most of the more extreme films because I usually know what it's going to be like before I watch.
One that did shock was 'Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom' based on the Marquis de Sade's book.

Several here in liking the sound of and although both have been mentioned...
Requiem For A Dream is a little bleak and disturbing and finishes well 
And Braindead is just brilliant, a tongue in cheek bloodbath and bloody hilarious, also like the shock factor with this and the fact it was directed by the same bloke that did LOTR and the Hobbit trilogy |

1989 film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover...crazy ass dick eating film with some of Englands finest actors...still disturbs me to this day
Also Spirited Away and Ponyo...both Japanese animated kids film...I dont even know how to describe that weird level of fuckedupness! |

Yes it's essentially a really f'd up horror film , at the same time a satire on the workings of the fashion industry
People have mentioned "braid dead" several times, that's one i love too..it's very comical, as well as shocking. Look up the custard scene on youtube for braindead/dead alive |

I hadn't seen the fist ones and don't want to either. I didn't like either of them.
I usually love horrors and thrillers and anything creepy but those two went too far for me.
I've watched the human centipede too, that's a messed up film but I watched the whole thing.

I've never seen eraserhead, but the way you describe it makes it sound as if it has similarities to videodrome. I think you would like videodrome if you haven't seen it

Wolf Creek - scene late in the film really throws a curve ball at you.
Hereditary - one scene in particular really got me. An, I didn't see something initially, but then when you do.....
Eden Lake - just an unpleasant social comment.
Mothman Prophecies - Just a supernatural generic thriller, but the way it was shot still creeps me out. |

I liked the 2nd wolf creek too.
About 3 years ago there was even a wolf creek TV series with the original actor; a continuation of the story, which i really liked. A lot went into the production & I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.
Eden lake is an unpleasant watch, but quite clever & powerful i thought. |

I saw it wayyy back in the 80s but definitely going to watch it on the big screen with a drink or two. |

I Like David lynch but thought eraser head was shit. Just because you think you ‘get’ it doesn’t make it good.
Paris Texas, so many bad reviews but I love it , I can re watch anytime and get something new from it, same with Walkabout, Pi and strictly ballroom. Thing is most reviews are done by people who don’t actually appreciate media as art and just want entertaining or something to ‘get’ |

"Wolf Creek - scene late in the film really throws a curve ball at you.
Hereditary - one scene in particular really got me. An, I didn't see something initially, but then when you do.....
Eden Lake - just an unpleasant social comment.
Mothman Prophecies - Just a supernatural generic thriller, but the way it was shot still creeps me out. "

Back in the day of ordering pirated DVD’s from the local seller, my friend ordered a copy of the movie girl next door.
Sposed to have been some lighthearted shitty film.
We sat down to watch it.
We did not get the movie that she ordered, instead we got some dark twisted other movie called girl next door.
It was truly horrific but one that I had to watch til the end to see how it ended…I wish I hadn’t  |
