Strange phone call

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Yesterday the phone rang, so I answered it and a man asked me if I banked with Barclays Bank, I said no, he asked if I had ever banked with them, I said no. He then said that last year I paid for some computer work, I said no I didn't, he said that I paid £150 for work to be done on my computer, I said "no I didn't and if something was wrong with my computer, I have friends who could repair it" He said "you have friends that could fix it? oh" I said yes and one of them builds websites so why would I pay out for repair work, I didn't at all, the only thing I did (though it was the year before) was buy some more memory for it. He got really snotty and rude and said will you please listen to me! so I shut up, it went quiet and then he said "that's better" so I put the phone down.

The thing is, I don't understand the connection between Barclays Bank and repair work I am supposed to have paid out for my computer? Anyone any idea what the connection is if there is one?

Have to say, he hasn't rung back but if he or someone else from his company does, they will get a piece of my mind, well what's left of it given I babysat my 5 week old granddaughter last night and been up since 4am

These people are the bane of my life, working from home I must get half a dozen such calls a week. They're preying on people they hope will be ill-informed or elderly.

I suggest you buy a nice loud whistle and keep it by the phone for their enjoyment

Probably some sort of scam.

We had one the other day asking about PPI...I asked who he worked for and he said The ministry of Justice.

They work to a script and if you ask questions they cock up like that one.

I play with them, let them give their spiel and then say my mum isn't in.

That was so weird, you already typed this but when I clicked to comment, it came up that you had removed it

I like that, my mum isnt it, Okay claims are the worst at the moment, have sent them an email and told them to stop harassing me

It's their phone bill - I just ask them to hold on a minute whilst I turn the tv/kettle/microwave off - pop them on mute, leave the phone connected - and crack on with whatever I was previously doing!!

Double the success - runs up a big bill for them (especially if it's my mobile they've called!) and also keeps the line busy to prevent other annoying bastards calling me!!

I get these all the time and i just say to them that i recording the call, with that they put the phone down.

No bank contacts you in that way ever. Lloyds have given me a web site that i can send all e-mails direct to them to follow them up. The worst one i get and its constant is someone claiming that they are from "Mirco-soft" you have to be on the ball with this, and it is an unfortunate situation where they target the elderly......

We never answer our landline, it goes straight to answerphone. If they leave a message we can decide if we want to speak to them. They rarely do though.

My latest ruse that I came up with yesterday...

As soon as they started speaking I gave a speech about the data protection act, then proceeded to ask for their address, date of birth etc.... caused massive confusion on their script

I had noticed that, get like 10-15 voicemails per day so I just delete on block now and don't listen to them

I tried that but it crashed and I sent an email like it says but no-one answered.

A big hats off though to the nice British woman that rang and asked had I received my PPI back and when I said yes, she said okay thanks, have a lovely evening and goodbye, we need more like her

It is so bl**** annoying that we have this invasion of privacy - have been ex directory for years because of Forces and it has helped but I still get scam calls on mobile! I consider it a real invasion of privacy.

Unless you have a business line you don't have to re-register with tps although there are occasions that will have you unregistered without notification but will still appear to be registered when you check for instance if you change phone provider so if you are getting a few calls coming through could be worth putting your details through again but be aware that tps only work on uk based calls and most "scams" tend to be diverted from overseas.

I asked if he minded that I carried on doing what he interrupted...

Then switched the vac on and held the phone next to it.

Oddly enough he was.gone when I'd finished the living room!

Even though he's 83, my Grandad is totally on the ball with these horrid scams. Depending on his mood and how busy he is, he either plays along with them, making them think he's gunna give in, then sets them straight, or he gives them a stern talking to about how disgusting their behaviour is, trying to con the elderly etc. We watched him do it one day and we couldn't stop giggling, he's amazing!

I think I might be getting somewhere with what is going on as today I received another call from a man from Microsoft, from a man called Ricky (though from his accent its highly unlikely to be his real name) who said that a company through Western had tried to take money from my bank account and he was trying to refund it back. The first 4 digits of the bank card he gave me are neither of mine and the end date for my card was not the same either.

(I have checked with my son as he is the only one that bought computer stuff for me, he didn't spend that much.)

I told the man that it was a scam and ended the call.

I am guessing he is trying to get my bank details etc which I will not under any circumstances give him.

I do not answer the landline phone unless it rings after 21:00h as I know it will be my mum ringing me.

On my mobile phone, I never take a call from an unknown number. If the caller wants to get hold of me, he/she will have to leave a message on my voicemail.

If you think it might really be your bank and not a scam, give them slightly wrong details. Your bank will know, a scammer won't.

Say your birthday right apart from month wrong, or say Street instead of Avenue etc.

The sad thing is the scammers must be making some money from it or they'd just give up and sod off.

And of course not return voicemails

I cannot tell if it is an unknown number as I don't have a display one but have family stuff today so needed to take calls, plus my friend might ring

Same here. My landline is only know by a handful of people and is primarily there to allow broadband access, so anyone ringing on it is either making random sales calls, or scams.

Sad world when you have to protect yourself with something as simple as your home phone..

It is an easy scam to get your card details.

They say "well we need to double check our records" and when you give them the details they basically take loans out on it and empty your bank account.

People do fall for it.
