"....watching Guitar Heroes at the BBC and for me the best guitarist ever is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, best band ever as well...yours?"
Thin Lizzy especially when Gary Moore was the guitarist
One of the most underrated bands of the 70’s and early 80’s.
One of my favourite tracks is Thunder and Lightning as heavy rock as it gets |

Tom Verlaine and Television, precisely because he was not everything Mark Knopfler is. Not "tasty", everything he played sounded like a neurosis playing out via a guitar, and magnetic because of it.
I do have massive respect for Mr Knopfler too though. Cannot stand Sultans of Swing because it's overplayed, but Lady Writer is a brilliant song, as is Single Handed Sailor. He did steal it all from the master, Richard Thompson, though. |

I was aware of Destiny's Child, but never really paid them much attention
Then I saw a YT video of them singing 'Emotion' live on German TV
Fuck, they were good
The blending was seamless, the differences in their voices just worked
They deserved their success |

I must say, absolutely brilliant post, I love it. |

I don't really like rock music, instrumental music or the sound of rock guitars
However, I have a couple of Rodrigo Y Gabriella CD's
I can't play them in the car
They make me drive like a fkin lunatic |

Are you one of those, can't appreciate or love something if everyone else does (see Dave Gorman on David Bowie) I could listen to Sultans of Swing every day, it really annoys me when it's played on the radio because they always cut off the final guitar rift |

"Brian May"
Dr Brian May, if you don't mind.
Apart from complete kudos for finally submitting his PhD thesis and getting his doctorate it's hardly rock and roll |

Jack White from the White Stripes
I watched a documentary called; It Might Get Loud, featuring Jack White, Jimmy Page and the Edge.
Page was fascinated with White and his style and it showed White to be creative as footage played of White creating a guitar out of a plank of wood, wire and a bottle

I've The White Stripes live a few times and the sound from just two people was immense! The Dead Weather also amazing!
Don't know the names of all guitarists but do like Smashing Pumpkins and The Moody Blues. On the slower chilled side of things Mazzy Star and Trespassers William are amazing too! |

Each to their own but they appear quite a contrived band! |

My Dad, love seeing him do some of the shadows stuff, but then does loads of acoustic to. But love a bit of him doing apache. He's 76 and never lost it. He hasn't played since my mum passed away at Christmas but we have made him a stage out of decking in our back garden for 'Bobfest' on Bank Holiday weekend |

Stripes not in my favourite top 5 or even 10 bands that I listen to regularly tbh but still great live! Jack and Meg were married, I doubt they were just for the band's sake!? It is each to their own, we all like different things and different parts to a band that might draw us in to them... it's all good...I love being introduced to new stuff or older stuff I've not come across before! |

"Angus Young. AC/DC .
Just seen AC/DC, on their apparently first UK TV appearance, he is so energetic, brilliant proformance "
I have dvd’s of live concerts. Shows how good he is and how difficult on some songs etc. Other band guitarists kept up with rhythm etc when he was dong solo. |

Glen Campbell was a phenomenal guitarist. As well as his solo career he was part of the Wrecking Crew. They were the session players that produced 90% of the music that came out of California in the sixties. |

There's so many to choose from! All the good one's create their own unique sound and style. For me Dave Murray, Randy Rhoads, Gary Moore,Adrian Vandenburg, Phil Collen, all superbly tallented but my favourite is Eddie Van Halen. His guitar playing was unique with definitely his own sound. Listen to "Hot for teacher" fantastic! |
