I really worry about these types of people
Do they ignore the instructions to put together furniture?
Do they just take out loans and say bollox to the terms and conditions of the loan?
What about cooking instructions?
Life is a scary place. |

A practical person could have flat packs together before an academic has read the leaflet.
Cooking is a skill that can be passed down practically......
But there is NO getting away from the fact that to get along with people you need comprehension of what they say and in this digital age reading is vital ..... mind you .... the internet does provide 'voices' for those that need them. |

I know quite a few people who can't read or who only read very slowly and with difficulty. They employ different strategies to cover the fact up and to cope but their life is very difficult. They frequently "forget their glasses", form filling is an absolute nightmare especially if they're asked to complete a form with other people watching and simple things like reading a street name are impossible.
They're sometime self employed because getting a job is really difficult. Families often help a non reader in loads of unseen ways
Comprehension is another thing altogether, not being able to read doesn't mean you can't comprehend. |

People who have difficulties with reading and writing are often some of the most intelligent people I have known.Having issues with the written word does not make anyone less than or someone to be worried about.
A guy I worked with years ago never learned to read but he could put his hand to anything from fixing machinery to driving anywhere in the country and never once was he late or got lost he even built boats from scratch .He even did deliveries for a local shop at one point and never mixed up people's groceries because he had other skills that he learned. He told me people's attitudes towards him was the reason as an adult he was too embarrassed to try and learn to read as when people looked down their noses at him once they knew. But he was one of the most intelligent people I have ever come across. |
