Fareham

Who else had a dad in the 70s who

Spent half his life behind a newspaper

Had just missed the war but grew up just before long hair and pop music

Watched every news bulletin

Laughed at every other act on Top of the Pops

Carved the meat on Sunday after coming home tipsy from his Sunday pint

Shoes we’re always polished and trousers creased

Hid in the shed or greenhouse when you had visitors

Left mum to tell you off

I miss him.

My dad raced Minis, till my mum had seen one too many blazing wrecks. Shot pistol in the European champs and took me to Bisley where I saw Lewis Collins posing with guns. Rode a Fireblade and drove a Caterham 7 into his 60s.

And then... used to call any soul act on TOTP in the 70s "who dat dere" music. Shared any number of white-privileged racist jokes with his porkier red-faced, coronary-in-waiting mates. Was a red flag socialist in his 20s and a Tory suckup by his 40s. Voted Brexit and is a vaccine sceptic but has chosen to live in Italy in his retirement.

These relationships are complex. A big part of me respects his drive and ambition, the other part thinks he's an utter twat.

Edinburgh (She/Her)

My father was a 70s dad and an asshole...

Haven't spoken or looked in his direction for 30 years and highly unlikely I ever will...

If I go to funeral it will be to make sure they burn him good and proper...

Think that covers it...

Complex like us their offspring.

"Complex like us their offspring."

Yeah. I can't dislike him, and probably don't disrespect him as much as it sounds. I'm more like him than I'd care to admit, and my grownup kids are all too keen to remind me of this!

Same time, I'm different. I'm still kind of a socialist, even in my 50s. I hate Tories enough to serial-kill them if it was legal. I'm OK with having enough money to live on comfortably but don't want more than I can spend. I try, really hard, not to have a racist bone in my body (and occasionally fail but not as casually as people did in the 70s).
