We don’t think about money like that. We buy what we need and … that’s it. We don’t watch blocks of money. Probably should but there’s only us two and the cats to worry about so we aren’t hard spenders. |

In the olden days it was something a husband would give his wife to make sure the house was looked after, food shopping, bills, cleaning etc.
Or a working child would give to parents to co tribute towards the upkeep of the House. |

No I suspect it is a very old and probably it originates from a very outdated concept of working men giving their stay at home wives and amount of money from the wage each week 'for the housekeeping'.
Yes i am of an age that when i was a kid i remember my dad and mum and lots of friends parents doing this.
It happened but i doubt it is a thing these days, but i may be wrong. |

In the olden days before dishwashers men used to give money to the wife to look after the household shop. Sometimes he would get a shag during the month and have to top up, nowadays it’s all different except the shag. I looked on google and found the explanation |

It is about trust...if there is a trad wife staying at home and looking after the kids and cooking the meals it's only right that the man gives the housekeeping money...and it should be a generous payment...it's getti.g evermore expensive |

We dunno, the housekeeper does the shopping 
Not really but of course it doesn't, everything went up crazily in the past 2 years.
One thing we don't get is our friends (married) have seperate bank accounts and each seem to hold the other to account on who.pays for what???? |

But in shory no. 50 years ago 1 income supported a family of 4 now 2 incomes don't , I'm talking about those who are in the jobs that keep the country ticking along.
Household work ought to be split, however it is the norm that a woman works and takes on more than 50% of the housekeeping and primary childcare ect. There neds to be a living wage not a minimum wage |

What works for one family does not always work for another...
I like a Trad partner...someone who is responsible with the family accounts and can make do and mend, make lovely meals on a budget and still be able to give those naughty teats..

The "trad wife", although not called by that phrase, is very much in the UK amongst Asian families. The wife runs the home, the children, everything domestic and that is her job and it's a very important position in the family, equal to the male breadwinner. The wife and husband have formal discussions as to the house running budget and the woman has the say over how it is allocated, including for her personal spending. It's a very successful system in most cases, but maybe not very western. |

A rather old fashioned name but the concept probably still exists in some households. I remember my parents working like this untill my youngest sibling hit school age, then my mum went back to work.
I was a stay at home mum for a while with my first and we had a similar system then again it changed when I went back to work. There's no way the same amount of money goes as far nowadays though, everything has gone up. |

It was always me giving the money, though it was never quite like that or called housekeeping.
I went to work and my husband looked after our boys, the money went into the joint account which we both had access too...whatever was left after the bills were paid and the boys had whatever they needed we split and each had half put back in our personal accounts

I have a separate account for all bills so don’t hVe to worry about them being paid.
All the bills have increased but the house has gone from 1 adult, a 15yo & a 10yo to 2 adults a 20yr (& a gf) & a 15yo.

I have a seperate account for bills and transfer the amount across so they take care of themselves.
I also pay into other accounts for different things like Christmas and birthdays, Car etc.
Then I set an amount each week for food.
Does it go as far as it did 10/15 years ago? No it doesn't. Not on food. Not on Christmas and not on the car. Not at all. The prices of things now compared to 10/15 years is very different.
If anything I notice it more on Christmas and birthdays though.

My earnings have gone up exponentially in the last 10 years (due to hard work and dedication, not just by chance) and I would imagine most people have had increases in their income over time. Whilst money doesn’t go as far on some things, we’ve seen other things become far more affordable. It’s swings and roundabouts. |

Different lifestyles, different choices, different ages.. whatever works well for you all is fantastic...yes I am old, yes I am traditional, and yes I gave housekeeping.. it does not work for all but it worked well for us...live and let live... |
